No more hardware NPD data for the public

No, that's still banned.
I'm sure it will still happen

Someone could easily post "Wii outsold the 360 by over 100,000 units last month" based on leaked numbers that he's seen on another site. I can't see how that would be bannable if he didn't quote the exact numbers.

Still banned, which is a cop out on GAF's administration, imo. But yadda, yadda, no gaf vs leaking gaf.

Do you really need to check "the state of the industry" sales-wise weekly?? quarter numbers are more than enough.

This is a silly argument. My Pop used to subscribe to Automotive News. It's an industry rag which covers the automobile industry. It was chock full of sales data, charts, news, etc. He no longer receives it, but I enjoyed reading that publication more than Motor Trend, Car&Driver, or Road&Track combined. The reason: you could get hard data and analysis. Very interesting stuff for me. The big NPD sales threads were always fun for the GIF's and stuff, but the real meat was in the discussion and analysis. That's what I'll miss.

I like the guys that are standing under the "NPD" with the big smiles on their faces. :lol

Well, I didn't mean unethical leaks of trade secret info . . . I meant that the numbers will still likely show up in public press releases, new stories, and other legitimate public places. The winning company is going to want to brag.

Well, therein lies the problem: all 3 are very likely to claim to be the "winning company". Numbers can be spun all sorts of ways. If we can't see the raw numbers, then when one of them says something like "We're now closing the gap" when in fact the gap is just widening more slowly, we'd have to assume they're outselling the competition when in fact, they aren't.

And that's just hardware. How about software, and all the other companies besides the big 3? We want to know whether critical success are also retail successes that will get sequels, or allow their developers more freedom with future games.

Guess that makes sense but it's too bad. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft usually post PR after an NPD, do you think those will be gone too since media won't have the hardware numbers?
I would assume press releases are fine. I'm kinda curious just where the lines are drawn - could we have a monthly thread where we collate the press releases and try to cross-reference information between them; "Mmm, Sony's talking Playstation Brand, so the PS3's probably below the Wii, which Nintendo have admitted did 300k this month..."

That could actually be kinda interesting, coming to a consensus on what lies beneath the spin.

Out of interest, just how much are the Big Three allowed to reveal? If, say, Sony were to suddenly storm ahead - as PS3, not 'Playstation Brand' - could they release a press release containing all of the explicit hardware numbers that prove their point?

So I take it the tie ratio data we were hoping for is right out.

If we'd only had quarterly data for this year, we'd never know if there was a period X360 outsold Wii, since we'd just see Wii outselling it for the quarter. We'd know PS3 sold 409K during Q3, but not whether it dropped heavily after the initial price cut. We'd know DS was the best-selling system in Q1, but not that it was in spite of poor January supply. We'd see PSP going down from Q2 to Q3, and not know whether the Slim launch was a disaster or the channel was starved before its arrival. There's a lot of detail to be missed.

He would be asked what his source was however, and what a fool you would be if you could not back up your statements with sources.

With some of the shit you complain about, you really have no solid ground to call other people on it. We were getting something we liked, now we don't.

GEE I WONDER WHAT THE REACTION WILL BE

IF ONLY I WERE A LAWYER MAYBE I COULD FIGURE IT OUT

Segata Sanshiro, my ultimate hero. You are my ultimate hero in Sega! You are crazy like a roll lizard! Diet Pepsi, Uh Huh™!

So, lets see what's better..... the leaked, detailed information that we used to get OR the trimmed down garabage that we were getting officially? Whether it's on GAF or not, I'm sure we'll be straight. Things might even work out better now that there should be an increased demand for that leaked information. I just think about the good old days when we used to get the goods. I miss those days and hope and expect that NPD's latest shenanigans will lead to their return.

Preach it!

Well, this pretty much blows. We've got our genius masterminds here that have been crunching numbers for a long ass time, and making pretty graphs to go along with it. They don't have the resources that some of the big time peeps have, but they rely on this information to get this shit just right.

Bah, it's their info, it's their game, but it seems like a bad play. Giving the public knowledge, and creating new generations of analysts should seem worthy of monthly data. Hell, it should be worthy of weekly data.

It's their game, but it seems a little dickish to me.

Don't know if anyone already mentioned this, but isn't Neilson moving into video game statistics, like tracking the amount of play time per household? Maybe they'll eventually fill the gap that NPD has left open.

Why buy videogames? There are enough sites on the net that go into great detail of how to obtain pirated copies! Fuck that shareware stuff! Why pay for something that can be had for free? Let's all pirate our games!

He could just say something like "the consensus is," or "according to the most accurate reports I've seen. . ."

So, this poster... he's either going to get banned for pulling numbers out of his ass (when he refuses to reveal his sources) or because he used NPD numbers (when he does).

Net result is the same, and I'm sure the offending posts will be edited pretty quickly. Mods get cranky, throwaway logins are created, Mods get even more pissed off, mass bannings, everybody loses. Woo yay hoopla.

Nice avatar. I miss crazy straws.

lol

just lol

i can't imagine better news: you useless fat turdsnackers will have nothing to base your ill-considered and grossly naive industry opinions on! HAW HAW HAW

this news is goty

now shut the fuck up and start talking about games again. here's a topic -- how did super mario galaxy wind up so freakin' mediocre

If Sony was behind this then they it confirms they actually want to be in 3rd place.

I don't want to believe that, but the timing reeks of something just like it.

now shut the fuck up and start talking about games again. here's a topic -- how did super mario 64 wind up so freakin' mediocre

Fixed.

oh shit drinky forgot about review scores

better go back to being an irrelevant joke character until those get abolished too

oh damn i see you're already on top of that

seriously, how is this news gonna change anything? the shitwits will still come to grossly incorrect conclusions and/or will find alternate forms of information to spin for their shitty third-place console camp. maybe we'll get back into tech talk again, where a budget gpu duct-taped to an over-engineered and under-tested multi-core processor is somehow capable of transcendent gaming experiences! i liked those the best.

Opinions like how the DS will be dead in a year once tens of millions of people start buying the PSP like crazy in 2005.

how many predictions have i made since my dreams were so cruelly quashed by reality? zero! for the past two years, my tack has been that the wii SHOULD fail on the grounds of it being an unadulterated punchbowl turd of a console, not that it WILL. unlike you micro-priapic knobslobbers, i LEARN THINGS.

but if you wanna dive into the cess, i can admit that my dream of a robust industry untainted by nintendo's misbegotten presence got in the way of my rationality. we all have our weak moments, where the sweet sweet pellet belies the smouldering aluminium panel beneath. and yet you learned nothing from my example!

In other words, you're afraid to open your mouth again because you know your foot will fly into it.

oh yes, because i haven't spoken in the last two years. go mop up those tears with one of your precious cream-filled glycerine extrusion byproducts, lard-ass!

if gaf can discredit the web's foremost reviewer -- jeffrey gerstmann, for the untutored -- by mocking his weight, then certainly i am permitted to observe crushed's lard-choked biomass as a severe personal failing wholly germane to his arguments

Just have someone post the numbers somewhere else and post the link here. Make sure they keep their identity a secret (i.e. not the same username). There are ways to still get the hardware numbers every month.

I don't get why we don't just do what we used to (one of the main reasons I joined was because full numbers would be posted every months, hundreds of games. Like how Atari sold 93 copies of the GBA version of Stuntman in October 2006). It wouldn't have to be that detailed, but everyone seemed to enjoy that.

But that's the problem: I suffer from a biomass deficiency, while Gerstmann is blessed with a surplus.

I suppose that could be used a knock against me, but I only wish to make the technical details clear.

we're all svelte on the internet. why, not an hour ago, i just ejaculated straight onto the clustered faces of robertsan21's twins! this thread demands pictures.
