EOUL, Sept. 15 (Yonhap) -- North Korea launched an "unidentified" missile eastward from Pyongyang, South Korea's military said Friday.

"North Korea fired an unidentified missile eastward from the vicinity of Pyongyang this morning," the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. It added that South Korea and the United States are analyzing additional information.

The South's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae immediately convened a National Security Council meeting, as the country's troops conducted a ballistic missile training in the East Sea in response to the North's latest provocation.

Japan's NHK broadcaster reported that the North seems to have fired the missile toward the northeastern region of Japan.

Late last month, the North lobbed a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile over the island nation.

I'm glad these threads are dated now. Since this is the new norm with DPRK launching missiles its good to know which thread is the most recent

Is it heading to Japan again?

It's heading east at least, and maybe OVER Japan again.

The last time they fired one over Japan was the only time I've seen them send out emergency alerts telling people to take shelter. If they just land in the sea before reaching Japan they haven't bothered.

Could this be a live warhead demonstration? Unlikely in extreme but some of the pundits have expected such a stunt to remove any doubt re their capability... For example in a empty part of the ocean etc

North Korea is playing a dangerous game. If one of their missiles even accidentally hits Japan, Guam, or any other country/territory and kills civilians, the UN will give a green light for the US to attack them with our own weaponry. Won't be pretty.

Are they close tho? When they said it was flying above Japan, some might get the mental image that it's above rooftops but wasn't it technically in space?

Eventually Japan and South Korea will have first strike nukes and other weaponry in their respective countries. When that happens China will have no choice but to reign in NK.

Apparently this may be the same situation as last time it flew over Hokkaido then into the Pacific.

Why isn't Japan shooting these missiles down if they are entering Japan air space? Are they hoping to retrieve the missiles intact for study?

This is so tiresome. It's time for China to step in and clean up this mess. They've had their buffer zone long enough, but it's not worth it to allow this shit to keep going on.

Because that'd be an unnecessary escalation.

And intercepting missiles isn't as easy as some people seem to think - and a failure would be disastrous. You don't want NK knowing you can't intercept their missiles.

I mean, ballistic missles aren't a game of Galaga you don't just "shoot them down"

Anti-missile systems are difficult. I don't think Japan has any, few countries have.
And ballistic missile defense systems are even more difficult and rarer....

So I know we have tested successfully that we have the ability to shoot these down. So why not just be like "Nah" for a while or would that technically be an act of war or something. I'd just like operation fly swat to take place where we shoot down their tests so they can not keep iterating on it.

Edit: looks like asked above. Beaten!
