You know, thinking about light gun games lately, I would really love to see one created with high end technology in mind. That is, I would love to see them exploit complex physics and environmental destruction in order to allow for a more interactive experience. Modern rail shooters are all still made with the sensibility of a game from the mid-90s, which isn't necessarily bad, but I'd like to see someone try and evolve the genre.
The Time Crisis style foot pedal would need to be in there, of course, as that adds a lot of depth to the genre.
Think of all the stuff developers have been aiming for in regards to materials destruction and physics. It becomes more demanding in an open environment, but an on-rails shooter could really allow them to go crazy with the interactions. The satisfaction you get from shooting enemies and the environment could be increased greatly. I think this could allow for more emergent gameplay within a railed environment.
It's a shame Time Crisis 4 failed to do anything of the sort (it's such a dated game).
I dunno, HotD and the announced Dead Space game have me thinking that the genre could make a come back. Obviously, they'd have to aim for a different platform, but the Guncon offered with TC4 would work really well.
Anyone else interested in seeing the genre evolve?
I know this isn't exactly related to HotD-Overkill directly, but I figured it was a good place to discuss it.
