the elevators were loading screens, you still had multiple ways to access each area from the others by the end of the game. Especially in Prime 2 which had a really sweet overworld design, like a wheel with spokes, with tons of secret pockets and passages in both worlds. Plus they were never linear in the sense Halo is. Usually there's one way you have to go, but you still have to find itDayShallCome said:Oh please, it's not like other Metroid games had actually connected worlds. The elevaters were just huge cop-outs. This is no different.
dark10x said:The linear design doesn't even seem to be the main issue so much as the repeating level chunks. It worked well enough for Halo simply because Halo was focused on combat scenarios rather than scenery (though it still provided some great scenery). Prime was always about exploring beautiful worlds with even the smallest of rooms appearing unique. Repeating segments would be a travesty here.
Jeremy Parish. He sees repeating in every game. Don't let him bother you.dark10x said:The linear design doesn't even seem to be the main issue so much as the repeating level chunks. Awesome. This looks so good in motion in these damn compressed videos, I can only imagine how this'll look and play on my own TV.Samus controls better in Prime 3 than she ever has before. In fact, the heroine's tight maneuverability and speed nurture a level of accuracy never before possible in a console-based first-person experience. Retro has included three different sensitivity levels for fans, so if you're the type who prefers a big bounding box and slower turns, you can do that. However, we highly recommend that all gamers play Prime 3 with advanced controls, which shrink the bounding box so that Samus turns quickly when your on-screen reticule begins to stray in any direction. Previously, Call of Duty 3 was the benchmark for accurate controls in a first-person game on Wii, but Prime 3 blows that title out of the water. If you've played any FPS-style game on Nintendo's system before, you will probably be running and gunning in Corruption and absolutely loving the freedom and speed of the controls in a matter of seconds, not minutes. It really is the new benchmark and simultaneously proof that smart studios can really utilize the Wii remote and nunchuk for some dazzling results.
The issue is...We have previews raving about the controls, but does that sacrifice the traditional Metroid feeling of exploration for better combat? Nothing can every keep you people happy. People have been complaining about backtracking for years but now that 1up says that its gone we go into panic mode?

I've always enjoyed the controls of Metroid Prime and am not looking forward to playing this on the Wii (I hate holding the pointer in a steady position for hours). I have no interest in additional combat as combat should never have been the focus AND I LOVE backtracking in the previous Prime games. I'm sure others would agree.
Many of the complaints leveled at the game were demanding that it should be something it was never meant to be. Look at the results...

First it was their totally unjustified review of ssx blur. Then they said re4 wii wasn't as good as the other versions (what were they smoking). Now they say there is no backtracking based on a 7 minute demo. wtf..
I'm never reading anything from 1up again.
jjasper said::lol I am not a big fan of 1up/EGM reviews but their complaints were 100% accurate.
SSX the messed uber trick detection ruined the game
RE4 it is easier with the new controls.

AniHawk said:Why would they make it more like Halo? Make it more like Half-Life 2. There's a FPS that's actually fun to play.
I would suggest the changes they've made are not things that are obvious from watching a video.Zerodoppler said:I'm with you. I've watched most of the new videos, and I still can't figure out what they've supposedly changed about the aiming to make it more like mouse + keyboard. To me, the controls look nearly identical to those in Red Steel.

PkunkFury said:yup, this is what gets me, too. repeating assets would kill Metroid. you need those unique environments as landmarks so you can find your way

And you're definitely smoking something. Probably the same stuff the as the guy who made the MGS4 conspiracy thread.

Metroid Prime 3 is going to rock. You can't tell from a 10 minute (or less) demo whether or not a game is going to be repetitive or linear. The original Metroid Prime's E3 demo level was the platform stage...and that couldn't have been any more linear at all. To all you lamers pulling out the one or two "disappointing" quotes, it's pretty obvious what you're trying to do.
Retro is not going to screw this up. They are all huge Metroid fans and understand the series well.

You're a troll if you voice a negative opinion about an upcoming big-name game, apparently.
Antagon said:They complained about it after seeing sky city. Do you see any repeating chunks in that developer walkthrough? I sure as hell don't.
Jeff-DSA said:How can you tell? It's a demo. They are focusing on the gameplay mechanics used in battle and interaction. How can you apply that small section of game to the whole experience? Everybody knows that Metroid Prime is about exploration, so it's probably safer to assume that's still the focus rather than to assume it's not. Like I said before, the platform section of Prime 1 was the demo at E3...were we calling it linear then?
Until Retro comes out and says that they're providing some sort of run and gun experience, I don't expect anything but a game based around exploration with fantastic action elements.
I feel the same way.... but I'll wait on MP3 before passing judgment on the whole series.Mato said:I'm disgusted with the way the prime series has gone. The first one was a work of art about isolation and exploration, but the second and now the third are filthy halo clones filled with stupid music and sci-fi gimmicks. Retro guys if any of you read this... well you suck. And if nintendo forced you to do this, then they suck.
jjasper said:This goes beyond the demo. I am negative because of what they have said about the game and what I have seen in screens.
How can their impressions go beyond the demos? Did they use a time machine and play the full game already?jjasper said:This goes beyond the demo. I am negative because of what they have said about the game and what I have seen in screens.
jj984jj said:How does their impressions go beyond the demos? Did they use a time machine and play the full game already?
And how in the **** can you tell how linear a game is from screenshots? What?
I hated that crap in both prime games...too much back tracking for a 3-d world in that vain. That crap got annoying, i'm all for not having it crazy linear but I'm damn glad they are reducing it.jjasper said:No. I am talking about things Retro has said like cutting some of the backtracking. I like it in Prime 1 and 2 (outside the final collectaton)so I don't want it to be diminished
Edit: I should have said something more clear the first time, my bad.
Yeah, I just saw the walkthrough myself and I don't understand his comments. I'm quite relieved to see just how good it is looking.Dez said:Comparing Halo's Library to Skytown is a joke.. I don't know what Parish is smoking.
