Good news, Del Rio came on the radio a couple hours ago and said that we should be seeing a Fred Taylor extension in the next day or so. Taylor, MJD and Greg Jones coming back. Now that's a damn backfield!

And that is alot of money tied up into one position.

Not really, MJD is making late 2nd round money, Taylor will be getting 2 mil probably and Greg Jones is still on his rookie deal. It's less than most feature backs when you add it all up.:P

Fixed.

On the official 49er board some members are reporting that they heard on KBO radio that the Niners are going to make play for Randy Moss.

If we get rid of AB we need SOMEBODY. And Randy running half speed straight down the field is better than nothing, I guess. Obviously , theres going to need to be some SERIOUS contract restructuring, though.

And if nothing else that means that we'll get atleast two primetime games and two nationally televised games each year!!

2006 DVOA rankings:

Greg Jones - N/A
Maurice Jones-Drew - 5th
Fred Taylor - 12th
Frank Gore - 14th
Clinton Portis - 17th

Seems like you got your <<< backwards.

Is this based off of 2006? If so thats not too fair to CP who was injured and hardly played before being put on IR. CP is definately a top 10 back, he had 1600+ yards in 2005 and set a new single season rushing record.

He was making claims for an injured Clinton Portis. It's not exactly fair to Greg Jones who didn't play in 2006 either. :P

The fact Jones-Drew is rated higher than Jackson is a joke:lol

Jackson slots in just above Frank Gore for DVOA, and leads the players listed for DPAR (ahead of Gore, Jones Drew, Taylor and eventually Portis). In case you're not familiar with the stats, DPAR measures total value and DVOA per-play value. So on average, either of the Jags running backs performs better than Jackson on a given play. In total, because they're sharing time in Jacksonville, Jackson does more. Either way you look at it, these are all players well inside the top third of the league - hardly average by any stretch of the imagination.

In my book, average = good RB. Could've been the way I typed it but it wasnt a slight towards anyone of them. I can't throw JD in the upper-echelon after 1yr and 160 carries, Fred Taylor is another story cause he's top 5 when healthy.

Sure, it's too early to say Jones-Drew is a top-flight RB in a rock-solid guaranteed-repeatable sort of a way, but it's not much of a stretch to say that he showed he was one for last season at least. That's not that few carries - 32nd in the league for number of attempts, which certainly isn't bad when he didn't even get the most on the team. And with that he got the highest YPC of any RB with >100 carries (third in the league for >10 carries) and was top-ten for rushing TDs, longest rush and rushes over 20 yards (not to mention receptions by a running back over 20 and 40 yards, and receiving TDs by a running back, though to be fair these were tied with a fair few other players).

As for pointers for the future, look at his rookie season combined yardage stats. I'm not saying that's a guarantee of performance, but the top three all-time numbers before this season were put up by Tim Brown, Gale Sayers and Eric Dickerson. Pretty lofty company. Dickerson has now been knocked off third spot by Jones-Drew.

Ok, you guys may have seen Methodman, FMT, and I bitch about a guy name Kwame Harris over the years in these threads, and wonder HTF can one may suck so bad..Well:

Kwame Harris lowlights reel:*the music is perfect*

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

I'll personally promise that the Niners will GIVE any team who takes him $10m.

Kwame "Brown" Harris has nothing on Kenyatta Walker. NOTHING.

Hah. Ephraim "Turnstile" Salaam would let them both breeze past him.

At least if he's a turnstile, the ball is being snapped. Kenyatta is content to just get a false start on every other play or so. Shoulda known better than to draft a Gator..

Bronco's just got a holy shit upgrade on defense....

I'm not sure what to think as a Lions fan. I mean Tatum Bell is a hell of a running back, but I would've liked a higher draft pick then a 5th rounder.

Oh well it never does hurt having a two headed dragon at RB, but this now means we have to waste a pick or two on a CB.

Joe Thomas is going to help both KJ and TB tremdously.:D

Also how is the tackle(George Foster)? Haven't heard much about him.

Dude, it's a winfall for us Lions fans. First off we have a solid backup RB in case Kjones doesn't get back from that Lisfranc injury in time for the season. We got another tackle in the deal so we don't have to depend on either Backus, Sapaia or a rookie (Joe Thomas probably) PLUS we got a 5th round pick (read: Free receiver probably) all for Bly who we were probably going to cut on the 19th anyways.

I mean, we were gonna have to waste picks on the secondary anyways cuz Marinelli and Co. knew that Bly wouldnt fit into the Tampa 2 as a cover corner.

edit: actually, the more I think about it... I'm not sure why Millen pushed for Tatum Bell. The guy doesn't have the attitude that Marinelli likes to have around. I guess it's still an upgrade at tackle, and I'm glad Marinelli is being responsible about building this team the right way.

According to Michael Silver of SI.com, the San Francisco 49ers are still one of many teams that will compete for wide receiver Drew Bennett's services when free agency begins at 9pm Pacific Time tonight.

The other interested teams include the New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders and New York Giants. The Tennessee Titans, Bennett's original team, are also expected to try and resign Bennett.

"I'm up for it," Bennett said. "I'm gonna play my ass off for someone."

Last season, Bennett, who is entering his 7th NFL season, lead the Titans in receiving with 46 catches for 737 yards and 3 touchdowns. In 2004, Bennett had a career year with 80 receptions for 1247 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Drew Bennett would be a good fit. But if we get him I would prefer for us to keep Bryant as well.. Bennett, Bryant, and Battle=the killer bees>*

But of course, we better no over pay him.

You guys should give Charles Rogers a workout.

he worked out for KC last week and ran a high 4.8 :lol

:(

But..but.. "Hes Charles Rogers.. He had 1400 yards and 13 touchdowns" the Madden commercial told me so!

And why would the Lions trade DRE BLY for Tatum Bell? You guys have Kevin Jones, Brandon Calhoun, and there are some better FAs out there if you REALLY wanted to bring in another HB. Ahh well, it will just make things easier for Alexander when we play you guys.

BTW, iapetus should be ecstatic. Scobee got a first-round RFA tender:lol

It's a crime he didn't get the first-and-a-third tender.

Nice to see McCray getting the first-round tender as well (and Carroll the low tender, basically making him unpoachable at a relatively low cost...) Not so sure Wilford's worth the second, especially if we are shopping for a WR in free agency, but I suppose with all the competition for the few decent FAs it's worth having a fallback...

Ok, so what do you guys think, should the Jets go for Jamal Lewis or no? Also, there's a Ravens LB we're supposed to be looking hard at that's gonna hit free agency. We've got some money to spend if we wanted to...

I would only get Jamal if he were cheap. He is still an adequate power back, but it looks like his best days are behind him. Kind of like that entire Baltimore offense...

That's what I think this trade comes down to. As long as George Foster is a solid tackle I will be extremely happy with this trade.

The o line was what kept us from going 8-8 at least last year. All the games we lost, with the exeption of the Bears, was by 10 points or less. I blame our shitty o line for that because we all saw how many turnovers Kitna had under pressure.

I'm hoping Joe Thomas can have the same immediate effect on our o line like D'Brickashaw had with the Jets last year.

EDIT: And like you said Bly wasn't exactly the best fit for the Tampa 2 defense.

Of course, because Portis played a full 16 games the 2006-2007 season perfectly healthy. What was I thinking? :lol (I get it, but my point remains the same, CP is far, FAR, FAR better than the rest of that group. Gore has potential though.)

Care to go back to the 2005 season and do that analysis again? And while you're on this season's DVOAs, I'll bet that Betts ranked higher that at least one of those other guys in the 2006-2007 season.

JGar just said he was excited at the prospect of playing for the Raiders. Suck it, FMT!

If he goes to Oakland I'll tell you exactly whats going to happen..

The Raiders will be sitting at 0-5 or 1-4 through 5 games, J-Gar will have 3Tds vs. 6/7 INTs and they will go to Jamarcus Russell.. JGAR should go to Tampa Bay and further extend DM's debt to the 49er organization. Besides, he'll look good from Calvin Johnson taking 5 yard slants and turning them into 60yard TDs every game.

Steelers to cut Joey Porter...

Come to San Fran friend!!! We'll find some place for you!
Where did you hear this?

I hope he goes to the Bengals and is a total waste of money for them.

Steelers need to get some stud LBs in the draft this year.

ESPN's got the article on the NFL front page. Is Pitt thinking of getting Adalius to replace Porter? Porter to Baltimore?

Also, Lovie got his contract extension. $22mil! Wow. Congrats, he deserves it.

That an injured Clinton Portis >>> Frank Gore, which isn't true. :D Not playing the full season doesn't impact DVOA, of course (though I believe it may take a hit on DPAR - I think even that's per-game, though...)

LiveWire said:

What, with Fred playing injured through most of the season? That just wouldn't be fair now, would it? :D

Clinton Portis - 11th
Frank Gore - 21st
Greg Jones - 24th
Fred Taylor - 35th

Fred's DVOA for this year (11.8%) is higher than Clinton Portis' for last year (10%). So healthy Fred > healthy Clinton > injured Clinton > injured Fred.

Just hypothetically, how much would you bet? (He ranked 18th, just behind Injured Clinton Portis - though by DPAR he slots in just behind Fred Taylor).

Rams cut Will Witherspoon

no but seriously, whats the chance of Joey Porter becoming a DE? Pretty much all he did in Pittsburgh anyway.
