Official Virtua Fighter 5 Battle Arena Version C Thread

I am also happy with not having lobbies. With limited time for gaming, I want to spend my time playing rather than watching. Also helps maintain a quality connection.

The lack of a penalty for drops will need to be changed. Too many rank whore kids out there.

good point, But they should have at least given us the option to "quick match" or "lobby match"

YESSS!

Picked it up early from a 24 Hour ASDA on friday morning around about 2am. ADDICT! xD I couldn't sleep as I ain't been this pumped about a release FOR AGES. Good thing I took the day off, I would have been a shivering wreck at work after the all nighter I pulled on this.

Turns out Friday was also the release of Pro Evo 2008, which they tried to sell me, but I 1 frame knee'd the shop clerk into the back of the shop and left with a copy of VF5.

General Impressions and stuff

BUY A STICK FIRST. Play later.

I'm pretty new to VF, as it's a hard game to get into if you aint got people around you to test out your skills and generally have a laugh on. Hard enough for my mates to play SF, never mind VF. Wanted to get into VF4 Evo but it would have been pointless.

Spent the early hours of Friday morning going through the Dojo, which is set up exactly like the PS3 version, meaning there is no Tutorial and situation training for each of the characters. Shame, but it's still good though, I think this is new to the 360 version as they have now included a Time Attack with online leaderboards.

Found this quite usefull as it made me concentrate more on getting the moves out quicker and more accurately, and has really improved my execution on using an arcade stick. WIN. For example, it took me 61 minutes to get through Akira's move list first. xD The "PROPER" Dragon Lance was a KILLER, but I can do it now, as well as his db P+K+G, K, P+G sweep to grab move. Ended up getting it down to 10 minutes on my next go, so it deffo works! :D

The only problem I've come across is that it's not as detailed as it should be, some of the moves which really should require a "demonstration" don't have one, and in some cases it's wrong. Usually if you have to hold the direction down, the arrow is coloured black and if you have to tap it's white. But if you go to characters like Shun, Vannessa and a few others, multi part moves where you are supposed to hold the direction while pressing the buttons become a nightmare as you have no idea unless you either whack it out by accident or try every single combination possible.

Worst one for this is Goh, as for his choke hold move where you can move the other player by the neck across the ring has, the inputs for UP\DOWN LEFT\RIGHT are all listed. So it makes it confusing to know what it's asking you exactly to do unless you do all the possible combinations. It had (Front)\(BACK) listed next to the name, but this did not help at all and made things even more confusing when you had to link 2 or 3 movements togeather and going through each one was a pain. Minors though.

Kage is doing my nut in though, Im failing at the exact same move as on the PS3 version. lol. Zenton\Kouten (HCF\B) + P, F,D,DF P+K. Can't nail the damn move yet. >_<;

Quest Mode

Reading about and talking to a few peeps, Quest Mode on the 360 version has better AI then the PS3 version. I wouldn't know as I did not play Quest Mode extensivly prior to the release on 360.

I thought things were a bit easy when I started playing, but when you head down to Club Sega North and Club Sega South and play the Master and 7-10th Dan opponents, get ready to be hurting! >_< I also just realised you can ramp the difficulty of Quest Mode in the options by flicking it from Normal to Expert. One for the nutters really.

Theres this one Vannessa player in Club Sega South which kicks my ass every time. Forgot her name, but it's a red clothed Vannessa with a night stick, blonde pig tails. Not beat her yet but I will do. >_<

It's really well done. I've learnt to play the game alot quicker by playing Quest Mode against decent AI opponents after a quick dabble with the command list, and have much more understanding of how the game plays in regards to combos, juggles, staggers and just generally what I can and cannot punish. Either through copying things I see the CPU characters do and just through general trial and error.

Just been playing this all weekend really. Online and Offline and really enjoying it. I can see Quest Mode lasting MONTHS, and that's just for one character! Scrolling down the Rival List was a bad thing though...I wanna beat every fucker in all the arcades! :D I think there is like 100-150 Rivals in each arcade. When you beat them, you will see a star by their name so it's a good indicator of who you have to still beat when you enter an arcade.

Just lost a Club Sega North Tourney though, first prize was 30,000 GOLD. So gutted, I wanted to buy my Akira a yellow tracksuit! *cries* Item Matches come up quite frequently which is a good thing, and when you hunt down the stronger opponents you can rank up pretty quickly as well. Setting Quest Mode to the hardest difficulty also boosts the speed in which you rank up as well, but obv, it's much more harder to win.

Online

Got lots of games this weekend and I am nothing short of stunned to see that this game does actually work quite well online. The reviewer guys are not bs'ing about this. I've played around about 60 matches online and only a handful of those have been unplayable. Ofcourse it will depend on person to person, people that I'm playing against the UK would have better connections then people from Germany or in the States when it's released.

The vast majority of the time playing tonight I had little to no lag affecting both my and my friend's game. Everything I wanted to do was coming out when and when I intended.
That's not to say I have not had the odd stutter, but it's no way destroyed my game or forced me to play online any different to how I am playing offline.

Moves are coming out when and when I want them, side steps, 1 frame Akira Knees, Dragon Lances and SPODS have been coming out effortlessly for me which makes me very happy as I've only really started to learn this game properly since the demo came out. I was even punishing and getting punished by people spamming low jab if that's a good enough indication for some peeps.

Really shocked at how good the net code is at the moment, much more stable then say Capcon vs. SNK 2 and 3rd Strike and even those games were great at the best of times. It's dependant on who you play, as theres some people out there who insist on having their downloads still running as they play. So when it's bad, it is really bad as with every other game, but the connections I've been getting with people on my list from the UK has been nothing short of greatness.

You can.

You select your fighter upon entering the match finder and match hosting screen, and if you want to change characters you have to exit out through the menu and select another character. It does not really take that long, but it was probably done this way to cut down on the loading times and stop people wasting time on the character select screen. You find a match, you select the player you want to fight and it's onto the fight. No messing about.

Game options wise, its pretty bare bones. But it has got a good system of casual games and ranked games. If you go into player match, you have no worries of losing rank or getting losses on your record. It's purely for fun and practice. You can win and lose as much as you want and it won't matter. This was a very much needed option in fighting games today as previous Capcom fighters were ALWAYS ranked and there are a lot of people out there that loved to drop to deny a win to their opponent. This way it's really not an issue as there is nothing to lose or gain.

You can change the following

Arena: No Wall, Low Wall, High Wall
Time: 30-60 secs
Rounds: 2-5

Oh and the VS Menu Music is AMAZING. I love it!

There’s no spectator mode, you can't view your opponent’s offline character name and sig either and you can't save online match replays. When playing against random players, the games are limited to just 1 match and then you are put back into the Quick Match\Create Match screen which is also how it works in ranked games to stop "win farming".

Ranked Matches are scored across all characters and are not character specific. So if you are an Akira player, you won't have a seperate record from that of your Kage profile, all the wins\losses are as one.

You can however see there pimped out fighter in their custom duds though! Against friends in private matches you can play each other all day using the retry option.

You act as if having a lobby requires you to fill it to capacity to play. I don't know of any fighting game that has a lobby system and excludes the option of 1 on 1 matches. Not having a lobby just limits your options.

To me and I am sure alot of people here, having an online fighter with good net code eclipses on the list of priorities everything else. Because if you had all the features such as lobbies and avatars cluttering things up or taking up dev time and the actual fighting suffered as a result of it, it would be a great shame. Despite what one poster said earlier on in the thread, I very much doubt you would put up with lag for the sake of a lobby.

Although "Replays" you would think they could have put that in as it is in VS mode. Maybe an oversight. Whether or not you fill it to capacity or not, it would still require time, effort and resources to go towards that aspect for people who would end up using that feature.

DOA4 had all of the features people expect these days, but it had horrendous net code. Even if I made sure no PC was on in the house, no downloads were running etc and made sure with my friends online that it was the case on their end too, it would still be for the majority of the time a crappy online fight experience. Theres only so long you can put up with lag before you think sod it, and move on.

I'm no dev, but they got their priorities right by me from my experience of playing it online over the weekend, I can't believe how good the games I had ran so well. Because at the end of the day, that is what you really want out a fighter. A non laggy experience which lets you play almost as good as or near enough to an offline connection.

Hopefully it will be the case for everyone else when they get to play it. I'm from the UK, so playing other people in the UK is not a great as distance as in the States if you want to play someone from East\West Coast, although saying that, I've had some very good games against people from the US when playing 3rd Strike.

For VFs first appearnce online it's pretty much unbelievable they have pulled it off. I sound like im overselling net code, but after playing so many fighters online over the years and to play a game like VF which right off the bat worked smoothly for my first 3 days online, I am really happy and pleased about it. :)

We will find out soon enough though if it's the case with everyone else. Don't get me wrong though, I have had some laggy games aganst some people and they were unplayable, but pretty much all my mates in the UK I had fantastic connections with and the vast majority of players I encountered via "Quick Match" were all good times.

Oops nevermind
Maybe I should try reading.
Thanks

Got the EX stick in the mail the other day. Did some screwing around with it on the demo and it's nice. Looking forward to playing online(ranked even, unless the achievements are ridiculous like reach the highest rank and/or 5-10-20-?? straight wins, then I'll just stick to player matches)

I've not had a Ranked Match yet, but the set up is exactly the same.

Quick Match
Custom Match Finder
Create Match

You can't change the Round Time and fights are fixed to 3 round battles. In player match once you have selected Quick Match, you can scroll left and right to select different opponents but I'm not really sure, I will get back to you on that when I brave the Ranked option. :) I assume that the win\loss record is also shown.

As far as Achievements go, I believe all of them are Offline based. The majority of them being awarded for beating the Official VF5 Tournaments in the VF Dome in Quest Mode, and also beating EVERY fighter in each of the Arcades. So basically...very tough when you consider that each arcade has 100-150 players in it. xD You have to use the same character data for these too btw.

The Hori EX2 Stick is great for this though, it's vital.

Has all the same features of a pad, 360 Guide button, bumpers tucked away at the top with the Start and Back buttons. You can also plug in a mic. Oh and yes, the stick is wired for anyone wondering. Although while playing VF5, I have accidently hit the Guide button a few times when reaching for the start and bumper buttons when trying to navigate through the options on the leaderboards and custimisation.

"Limited Edition"?...not a hastily placed and stuck sticker on left over stock. ;p Check out them rad stickers too! For anyone with the DOA4 stick, this is exactly what it is minus the crap Kokoro art plate. Expensive for what it is, but it gets the job done and is a great stick.

In a nutshell, the Fighting Stick EX2 to me feels almost exactly like the Hori Soul Calibur II stick which is regarded by many as one of the best sticks you can get for the PS2 outside of a HRAP, even with it's stock buttons and parts. Like the SCII stick, it's very light and not bulky to hold and use at all.

Even though it's been apparently been released because of VF5 (the sticker says so!) it's not, so you have to make sure you config the buttons correctly before you begin in the options.

153tedt.jpg

That's how I have them set, I just use A (Gaurd), B (Punch) and X (Kick). While i'm at it heres the way you arrange the buttons for Street Fighter AE.

X: Medium Punch
Y: Hard Punch
White\Right Trigger: Hard Kick
A: Light Kick
B: Light Punch
Black\Left Trigger: Hard Punch

This game is just not built for a pad in any shape or form. Take it from me, believe me...it's practically impossible. I can play ANY fighting game on a pad...MvC2, CvS2, SF3, HSF2, SSF2T, Tekken...but Virtua Fighter for me has always been impossible. The sense of timing and rythem to some of the moves is totally lost on a pad as you can't really drum the moves out like you can on stick and the buttons. Also the inputs for some of the moves and combos are quite strict and that is just not gonna do your fingers any favours and you WILL end up with a claw hand.

This stick passes all of the above tests for VF for me. Within a few minutes I was able to pull of some moves which were totally impossible on pad without binding buttons togeather (NO...Not a good Idea, creates bad habits [P+K+G to X for example]) so no complaints from me about this.

If this is your first VF, you might as well start learning it to begin with on a stick as then you won't have any problems or issues if you have to transition later on. Which is a real hard thing to do if you get comfortable or efficiant on anything else but an arcade stick for fighters. Trust me, I'm still trying to shake off my pad playing days on 3rd strike, it was a very LONG and agonising process relearning the game on a different controller. Atleast with a stick you can't go wrong as Arcade Sticks are Arcade Sticks and don't change, pads do.

I was having some trouble hitting the diagonals, but that was early on when I was still learning. You just have to make sure you are actually hitting that diagonal switch and not just pushing down, which I realised I was thanks to the Dojo onscreen buttons and stick viewer.

i played the 360 version today, its ok. I found it was either piss easy or head implodingly hard. There I was beating up the Lucha dude with punch kick combos and the next thing the girl who looks like Oichi from Samurai Warriors whoops my ass with low kicks and grabs.

i want this game so fucking bad! but i guess i need a 360 first... :/ (by the end of this year a 360, stick and VF5 will be mines).

sweet jesus i cant wait! (wish i didnt have to).

its sounds like lazyness on AM2's part, if it was really a lag issue then they could have let you had the option to turn it on or off..I will put up with the lag to have that DOA4 style arcade feel when playing-nothing better than being able to watch who your going to play next and everyone else screaming and chanting when the matches get really close.
still a day 1 buy, but AM2 needs to do its homework on online gaming
Or the people that like to just randomly bum around in the lobbies doing absolutely nothing except drawing away a little of the connection. Better yet when you get two+ who are talking about their favorite Flintstones episodes.

Ok guys I'm f'n back... add me add me- Jirotrom

I wont be able to really play till after Thursday though, I have a big test... SO ADD ME!:D

Awesome thread.

Japan box art wins; I will buy this version just for the art despite having the UK version on 360 already.

Has anyone figured out of High Grades can work on a 360 somehow yet?

Also, this is important:

UK TOURNAMENT TO BE TELEVISED:

I have been tasked with organising a 32-man UK tournament for VF5 to be filmed in one day and televised on a certain popular Sky channel. Obviously I am going to head over to VFDC and see who's up for it but we want quality players from the UK involved with this, YESTERDAY. Ryan Hart (UK champ) is up for it as are another of other personal contacts. I want to know if the likes of Trojan X, Jeffahn, and any other UK-based VFers on NeoGAF are up for it. Shooting late November. All travel expenses will be paid (not including cabs). Location is Docklands. Deadline to get names together - 16th Nov. Sega is involved and all the rest of it.

If you are interested please email me directly at adam at kikizo com or say what you think here (as it is slightly off topic) but I don't want to take the piss by starting a new thread.

You have to get it modded. That involves taking a regular 360 controller, taking out it's PCB, then replacing the one in the high grade. I had it done for me, and I am enjoying my high grade on the 360 demo. :D

Nope. Games never actually get to stores until a day after the date. (unless it's big release which usually get shipped beforehand)

I'm trying to snaz up my custom stick, does anyone know where I can find those little plastic feet to stick on the bottom? What are those called?

Where's the love for this game. Only 2 pages?

I'm excited for it, been waiting for it since I touched the Ps3 one way back at the beginning of the year.

JUST ORDERED MY HORI STICK AND VF5.

WILL BE READY TO BATTLE IN 2 DAYS.

YES I REALLY AM YELLING.

I LOVE YOU SEGA.

Check out this thread on srk.com:

http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=139478

Edit: actually the link posted to srk above mine is better. This link is more for if you want it to work for both PS3 and 360, but that is EXPENSIVE (you are looking at around 300 dollars+ total - includes purchase of import VSHG and gamestop 360 controller). I just had mine done so it works on 360, which ended up happening for free because the guy messed something up and I had to go in and fix it myself. He allowed me to go without paying the service fee, and he actually did pretty much all of the work (he wired the triggers to work, but they don't and go off randomly due to the analog engine - I went in and basically snipped those wires; make sure they DON'T wire the triggers to the stick unless they really know what they are doing).
