Official Virtua Fighter 5 Battle Arena Version C Thread

Yeah, I remember the removal of Taka-Arashi had something to do with the character animation, hit/collision boxes, and the special properties his weight brought into play. I think the first two are a non-issue now (I've noticed Wolf grab air for a grapple on El Blaze once or twice), so maybe the third is the hold up?

I'd be surprised if we saw Taka-Arashi back though, especially now that Yu Suzuki has sort of taken a hands-off approach to the series.
I would think that next-gen physics engines and whatnot could mitigate the issues of realistically controlling a fat sumo wrestler in a game like Virtua Fighter. The tech is certainly there now for the X360 and PS3...

Does anyone know how to use your customized controller settings online? Every time I enter a match the controller resets to default and I get an ass full of Kage's arms and legs.

You gotta set the 2nd player's controls as the same as player 1.

set your custom on the second player ontroller as well, you are probably joining matches as player 2.

One of you industry types call Sega and tell them that their English Dubbing is beyond ridiculous. Enough is enough already. >_<

I apologize ahead of time for the noobish nature of this question but haunts, what on Earth does the number before the button (ie. 46p) mean? I feel like I fell asleep during class...

Leon's "I'm the TWICE the man I used to be!" followed by a little half-smirk is pretty damn weird too.

I wouldn't trade Jeffry's VA for the world, though.

Just so anyone doesn't waste any money(like I unfortunately did)I will run down the 2 controllers I got since I got VF5

Hori EX Turbo Controller
I got this in a week ago.

When I got this in it felt surprisingly comfortable in my hands and the directional pad and buttons felt spot on. . ..but then I decided to test it.

First I went in Street Fighter II HF to see if traditional directions would work good. This is where I found the fatal flaw though.Only about 75% of my inputs would register correctly.I'm not sure if this is the directional pad itself or the buttons or a combination of both.A lot of times when I would do a hadoken or sonic boom I would end up getting a neutral punch or kick every other input.

Next I tired it on Virtua Fighter 5.The same thing applied to this game also.Trying to do Evades and Crouch Dashes were only successful 75% of the time and doing moves that involved Down-forward combinations didn't come out too good at all.

In my opinion this controller is passable for Xbox Live Arcade games that don't rely on many fast or combination inputs, but for people like me who really want their execution to be at it's peak for a controller on Fighting games,I would not recommend it at all.

Next. . .

Gamestop Xbox360 Controller
th_802180b.jpg

I found a used one for $20 at a Gamestop I work near a couple weeks ago.

This controller like most of gamestops 3rd party ware isn't too comfortable on the hands. Its in the same similar shape as the Microsoft 360 controllers but all the buttons are pretty stiff at first, but the trigger buttons are much more stiff and just plain suck for just about everything. The analogs are also very cheap and could probably snap and break easily.

When it comes to the directional pad though, this is the most responsive one you can possibly get imo.Not that its perfect though. The only execution problem with the directional pad is that, like the face buttons,it's made of stiff plastic.Along with that, the back direction does not like to respond all the time,so this makes back dashing and QCB moves more of a pain to do. I would choose this this over the Hori Controller, just for execution of moves.

Overall I really wouldn't recommend either controllers to people who want all of their moves to come out when they are suppose to and to just either wait for a decent Xbox controller converter(the XFPS is a huge waste of money since it makes just about anything you plug into it unresponsive)or invest in the Hori Joystick or even get a custom one built from someone dependable at the shoryuken.com forums.

If you really want to be serious about VF, you should invest in a nice arcade stick.

However, if you're not serious about VF, I'd stick with the 360 pad and use characters with simple inputs to reduce the margin of error.

Pardon the noob question, but how the heck do you roll out when you're knocked to the ground? Rented the game to see if I like it, but can't figure it out--and nothing only says what to do. Came w/ no instruction manual so no help there.

Tried all the diff players, like Vanessa the most so far because of her Vale Tudo. Since I'm doin MMA right now, it's the closest thing. She has some wicked P+K hooks that just look cool. I get destroyed when playing online though. I can't do the offensive moves right--you'd think it'd be easy to at least input it right, agh.

I'm a Street Fighter person, so this game's very foreign to me. Lot harder to pick up than Tekken.

not a noobish question, its just habit i have gotten into after reading so much on VFDC. but anyway, its for movements. Look at your number pad on the keyboard. Speaking from 1p side, 4 is back and 6 is forward, 3 is down forward etc etc.. so 66p is forward forward punch.. make sense?

i find it easier to do notations like this for VF since there aren't as many qcf, hcf etc movements like there are in street fighter.

Basically just tap down and all three buttons as you hit the ground to do a quick rise. To roll around I think you just tap up or down or w/e..

directional input + P+K+G if you get launched and are about to hit the ground.

directional input + G if you are on the ground and wanna roll away or sideways. This is the less preferred method because of heavy online up+K/P abuse when you are on the ground. I think you can also directional input + P+K+G when you are lying on the ground.

Default for P+K+G is the left trigger, btw.

Ahh thanks, I thought I did direction + P+K+G and it just stood up. Guess I was doing it wrong then. Gonna watch all the Vanessa pro youtube vids and see their strats. Looks like they use a lot of the ->K knee move.

Alright, slightly getting a hang of some moves Reno recommended, but now I'm being stalked by a scrubby Pai player. Not because of I have a high self-esteem or something, but because the guy really is that bad. He literally only uses three different combo's (and it's very apparent when he's going to use which one), but yet he managed to worked himself up from 10th kyu to 3rd dan in two days time. And it's not like he had a bad connection or anything, because when I see him host, he always has a green bar. But what's weird is that I easily beat him every time I beat him and every time he comes back for more. @_@

So in other words: if anyone wants some easy experience, be on the look-out for SmokyPoet.

So you've played online by now then? Up for a little sparring session one of these days if you're looking for some practice?

They'd have to do too much extra work. It's easier to throw in a brazilian capoeira fighter.

I gave the demo another go last night. It still sucks for giving new players a leg up but I do have a much more favourable opinion of the game now. I didn't even know there was a move list till I looked. But after that I was pulling off some basic moves and combos and everything became a bit more satisfying. I can see the depth for sure. It is overwhelming though. Looking through the moves list for each character is daunting. How the hell could anyone learn all this shit is beyond me.

One question I have is about the fighting styles. What button do you press on the 360 pad to change styles? Is it rb? Reason I ask is that with sarah (is it sarah, the blonde chick?) pressing that button shifts the stance. Didn't seem to work with Akira though. So how exactly do styles/stances work?

Honestly I may end up buying the game, as long as this single player quest mode is deep and there's plenty to do. I don't want single player to be over in five minutes with little stories at the end for each character ala Tekken and that's it.

That's because (and I already told you in a previous post ;p) the retail game has a Dojo Mode where you can practice every move for as long as you like. The game shows you which buttons to push for every move and that's how you get accustomed to a character's move set.

And the Quest Mode is pretty deep for a beat 'em up. Multiple arcades with hundreds of combatants each and there's plenty of items and emblems to unlock, so that you can customize your character. It's a little easy in the beginning, but it'll definitely become more difficult once you starting those with a Dan rank.

Switching stances is a command input like any other move, not a common button press. Some characters switch stances after performing certain moves, too. Sarah's "down-forward P, K" move is golden for this.

Ah, that clears things up. I figured they were substitutes for directional inputs but I tried to apply them to the face of a clock which makes no sense whatsoever. I never considered the numpad.

Either way, thanks for the clarification.

Holy...the #1 guy just 'abuses' Vanessa's charging kick all day.

How do you escape her mount? I think I'm blurring the controls from playing vs. her in VF4 and the T5 mounts.

Check out the top Sarah player. That player uses this badass combo that has a damage range of 93-98, depending on what finishing move you use! It's FUCKING INSANE! I used it on a bunch of people, tonight - and they DID NOT like it. :lol

Through VF.TV, I think, but you can't watch their best online matches or anything like that.
I thought all the stuff on VF.TV is already on the disc, maybe i'm looking at the wrong thing. What exactly are you going to to watch vids?

Haven't really bothered with that aspect of the game yet, but I think you can only open leaderboards of the Score Attack Mode there (or whatever it's called) and watch replays of those that finished it. Most people just abuse the same move repeatedly because of weak A.I., so watching those kind of replays is far from thrilling.

I know, so where are you guys watching the top players? They need to add replays from the top guys, or highest rated replays or something, actually I want VFTV like VT-TV.

What I just said, IS what they are talking about (to my knowledge)... ;p

But I agree that AM2 needed to add actual online fights as well, similar to how it works in the arcades.

I don't think you can, unlike what Sumo did for VT3. Far, far worse omission than lobbies, IMO.

I played some guy twice (split), then checked the leaderboard and he was #1 in wins, 6th dan.

here is my stick... thanks goes to Akuma001 at SRK forums, you guys think I should keep the blue bubble stick or go with a white bubble stick?
Wow. Now I want a custom stick. The blue is a good choice.

Btw, my friend that plans on modding his two High Grades for dual PS360 use is also going to swap some Sanwas into his Hori EX2 chassis just because he's a nutter. It'll be interesting to see it all complete and try out the differences.

Is there anyway to turn off the gawd-awful character voice-overs?
If I'm not mistaken you can only change the language. I know some people have opted for changing their dashboards to Japanese to get the original voices.

"I Love GAF"????

That's the motto of "MajinJekku", one of the CPU players. Has this been pointed out? Theres no way it could've come from someone online because I haven't been logged into live since I've had the game. Unless this refers to something else, it sounds like someone over at SEGA is a regular here...any idea who?

Sega held a contest where ppl were able to put in their own character ring names and comments. So yea, that probably explains it(this was for the PS3 version, and those chars got carried over to the 360).

Learned a couple of new grabs today, very enjoyable how dirty Goh can be with some of those (like those that need to be activated with a certain move).

Not sure if this has been mentioned but his most damaging throws are up and half circle back or up and half circle towards and throw.

Played for like 2 straight hours with Marty last night. Good games between his Sarah and my Lion. Pretty evenly matched as neither of us had a win streak longer than 2 or 3.

If you want a taste of my Lion, my gamertag is chespace t10.

And I'll be online throughout the day.

Going to post this in the online gaming section too.

Man, this game is a fucking miracle. I know it's pretty barebones features wise (I mean, wtf, no stage changes even?) but the fact that I was playing VF between Seattle and SF while chatting at 60fps.... phew... damn.

Is there any way to use an Xbox/PS2 MAS stick with the 360? I have a MAS stick I used with VF4, but I'd love to use it on my 360.

I'll hit you up later, che. I have yet to take this one online, but I'm finally confortable enough with Lei to feel like I wouldn't completely embarass myself.

I sasw you on last night but I was pretty tired because of COD4, I wasn't going to sleep until I beat that Epilogue mission on veteran, that and I want my arcade stick back before I start playing VF5 again.

Man, now that I'm finished with Mass Effect, I should really go back and finish COD4 on veteran. It's just too broken for me to want to play on veteran though. I'm currently on that helicopter grenade launcher mission. TOTAL BULLSHIT. Anyway, I digress.

Hopping on VF5 now.

Yeah, noticed that in a few Youtube videos, but I'm not going to use those yet, at least not for a while. They aren't exactly safe grabs for me at the moment because it takes a while before I can do their motions (even in the Dojo Mode), let alone actually connect them at the right time. So I'll stick with those that I can do at a consistent rate. :p

You can send me an invite if you want, and I don't think there will be any lag. Played with _dementia a few days ago (he also lives in the US I think) and our games ran very smoothly.
