Oneangrygamer.net: Sony's PS4 Censorship Policy Forces Japanese Devs To Censor Games In Japan

Some gamers believed that if they convinced Sony of Japan to have a talk with Sony of America, they could get them to reverse the new censorship policy in place that forbids developers from including ecchi or sexual content that’s aimed at straight male gamers. However, it appears that such an effort is futile since Sony’s new policy that prohibits sexual imagery aimed at straight males is not only taking effect for titles releasing in the West for the PS4, but it also appears to be affecting games released in Japan as well.
Gematsu spotted a collection of tweets from a Japanese connoisseur of lewd games, and they released some comparison shots from the recently released visual novel Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart, which came out in Japan for PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and PC. As noted by Gematsu, the PS4 version, in Japan, has been censored, thus proving that Sony’s ecchi extermination is in full swing.

The list of anti consumer nonsense grows ever longer...
Having beef with them at the moment for a stupid decision they made with their xperia Xz3 campaign.

Weird decision as this doesn't seem like something that would be translated in English. Is it because of China? They buy games in Japanese. Why is sony blocking content in Japan? Because journos buy imports just to get offended?

Wonder how this will affect ryu ga gotoku. Luckily they are starting to move their library to PC but I doubt they would make that version more risque.

I feel this deserves a new thread from the Senran thread.

Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart, a Japanese VN was released for PS4 and Switch yesterday. This game was originally released on PS Vita a year ago.

PS4 now has extreme censorship while the Switch version doesn't.

The game is rated CERO D which is similar to ESRB M. This game is not released in the West.

More comparisons

In case you can't see or open the Twitter links, I put a imgur comparison of one of them. (spoiler because NSFW)

Is it complete censorship or is it applied only to games were the characters ages (in-game age and/or visual look) can be perceived as them being minors?
If that's the case, I can understand why they are being more restrict.

Correct, the images you have posted have been censored. What do you think about it OP?

I feel in my personal opinion, that the characters are designed to embody similar traits to children and I can totally understand their reasoning for doing said censorship.

Probably don't want porn on there screens for PR reasons.

Hard to sell to kids with stuff like that.
IMO It makes Sony look worse if Nintendo are still happy to offer these games uncensored. Are Sony trying to appease to hard letters? I mean I consider myself left leaning but this is redonk.

There is a large progressive puritan wing at Sony America, and they are censoring anything a male hetero gamer might find sexy.

Patiently waiting for the last of us 2 and its celebration of lgbt sexuality.

As long it's clear the characters are adults, I don't think it's a crime or shame to look younger than your age.

I wonder where you live where children are that well endowed...

They look like normal cutesy styled anime 18ish area characters to me.... Even if that wasn't the case, this is Japan not America or Europe, so that still wouldn't make sense in this scenario.

Compromising sales to appease dipshits on Twitter who probably dont even own a PS4 will never stop being painfully retarded. Sony is officially using their entire platform to push their politics on its userbase. They couldn't just be happy with their first-party games ticking all the sjw boxes they had to screw over their third-party partners too.

Indeed. And i remember being pissed when they censored the western launch of dragon ball fusions (replacing sword with sticks) on the 3ds
This is pretty much near the same level as what happened with Tokyo Mirage Sessions, which also seems to be the game that got Nintendo to stop doing this shit after how bad the sales and backlash were.

Some people on this forum will cry their eyes out and fake boycott Sony, but if "THIS" is the example then I'm not surprised. I never thought any of the video game companies would allow for a woman's coochie to be displayed in a game. Seems a bit extra to be honest.

Next thing you know, Sony will mandate developers to remove hip bones. What a fucking timeline where the kid friendly company is being more adult than the company that supposedly caters to the more mature audience.

They already said they were going to censor the remasters to avoid pissing off the transgenders and their white knights so I wouldnt be surprised if any other content gets neutered down the line.

One angry gamer is pretty biased, although I guess you can say that of most outlets today, it's just that this one goes to the other end of the spectrum. I'm pretty sure it's aimed at all anime stuff or general lewdness, not just whatever titillates straight males. But this does need to end, we have ratings boards, it isn't porn, it's completely legal, I don't see the value in these companies adding yet another layer on top of that. And we finally got Nintendo to chill with this shit a bit too, I don't want them getting funny ideas again.

It has happened many times before. Same thing happened for Blizzard will World of Warcraft. It seems like after they have the majority of the market the game from catering to gamers to the casual market instead.

I'm so glad Sony censored all those breasts in the Witcher 3. Oh wait...

Yes let’s compress to games from the past where there were no censoring to now where they censor. Makes perfect sense.

Your comment makes no sense. Aside from the "let's compress to games" which literally makes no sense, the Witcher came out in 2015 but I can boot it up today and play with nudity. It would be patched out if it were such an issue. Are you suggesting Cyberpunk 2077's PS4 version will have no nudity?

I'm so disappointed in Sony. I wonder what will happen with Cyberpunk if CDR tries to have as much sexual content as Witcher 3...

I don't care about VN's personally but if they continue with this trend and it affects the games I like it could push me to jump out of Sony's ecosystem.

Yeah, Western games for some peculiar reason get total freedom and it seemingly always been that way. Well, maybe except Agony. Maybe because they consider them adults or older looking so it’s ok to them? I really don’t know. A decent portion of AAA western have nudity and no one seems to bat an eyelid, but suggestive poses or skimpy outfits are looked at negatively in Japanese games. 🤔

Japanese developers should send a message to Sony about censorship by going to better platform like Switch and PC.
True, but the problem is those Japanese developers are going to lose out on a substantially immense portion of the market and with niche games, you need all the help you can get. It’s like a catch 22. They should definitely speak up though and really express their disappointment in Sony’s new policies.
