The funniest thing is if Pachter was right 3 years ago Wii HD would of actually of been Nintendo's Dreamcast.

It's worth pointing out that Pachter seems to consider Wii U as Wii HD. That is a 7-year late entry into the current generation, as opposed to the first entry into the next generation. It seems to color his analysis of the Wii U. Once more specs come out on Wii U and the others, his opinion could change.
That said, he's wrong on what the Wii U is. It's the first entry into the next generation and not a current generation console. It has a good chance of being the base version of third-party ports next-generation, if the specs are high enough and sales are good for the games. Also unlike the Dreamcast/PS2/GCN/XBX era, systems nowadays don't have drastically different architectures, so as long as Wii U can run the engines used to create games on PS4/720, just in a scaled down fashion, the likelihood of full cross-platform port support is very, very high.

I think it means a year or two of moderate success before it's highly powered rival(s) show up to lay the smack down, steal all of its 3rd party support, and outsell it 10:1.

If any console ends up being half of what Dreamcast was in its time, then it'll be an absolute fucking day 1, must buy for me. I don't even care if it only lasts a year. The level of charming and creative games produced will be amazing.

Gamecube sold for a slight loss twice, first at launch then 1.5 years later when it dropped to $99. In both cases the sale of a single 1st party game covered the hardware loss.
I've heard Famicom was originally sold at a loss upfront too, but I don't know how verifiable that is.

So, when is Nintendo going to just hire Pachter finally..
I's like to know:
- When Nintendo through lack of either foresight, asset stability/security, or mismanagement bled money to reach the levels of SEGA when Dreamcast was getting ready to be Dreamcast'd.
- When Nintendo came fresh off back to back failures of multiple different expensive peripherals and add-on accessories for their already expensive consoles before dropping one console that was an overall stinker and becoming near recluses for one generation.
- When Nintendo IPs began to deteriorate and lose their appeal among gaming-dom as a whole (and not just those loud voices on heavy enthusiast forums or the internet at large).
- When Iwata started smoking a fuck load of exotic recreational drugs.
So I can properly say that Pachter's on to something here.

Regardless of how Wii U's hardware compares to the other two, Nintendo isn't in the same position as Sega was in the Dreamcast days... at all.

Then why did Destructoid say he did? I've seen this article posted on a handfull of different sites, each one with the headline "Pachter calls the WiiU the Dreamcast."
The expression being "dreamcasted" refer to the collapse of a system caused just by the hype of a emerging competing platform.
Or if you will a system so weak (I'm not talking about specs) that fade away soon after release without the ability to compete meaningfully against rival platforms.

I don't know I kind of agree with him. Not necessarily in sales. But its in an awkward position of coming out early compared to competitors who may release a much better system graphically making things awkward for devs...

It's still terrible language and terrible metaphor, to make us pick and choose from the connotations like that.
Just say that U will be eclipsed in the near term by new offerings from Microsoft and Sony and leave the damn Dreamcast out of it.

The third party ports Nintendo has shown off so far would only serve to confirm what Pachter is saying. But I don't think Nintendo is that stupid and I'm sure they'll have surprises on board for E3.

I dont think that Pachter puts too much into this answer (he was afterall asked if the WiiU would "Dreamcast" itself, so it isn't a statement from him) other than that the WiiU might not sell as well if it is beeing seen as being a similar console like the Xbox 360, in terms of graphics and control scheme. He dont want to make much prediction yet since he doesnt know the price of the WiiU. To me at least, it doesnt seem like he is making a comparison that the WiiU will sell as much/little as the Dreamcast did.

I'm pretty sure even ps3 and 360 will continue to get new games well into next gen. The wii u should have no problems there.
