Pacific Rim Uprising - Trailer 1

Looks alright-ish, I guess.

My biggest problem is that the Jaegars don't seem to have the weight to them that they used to, which sucks from where I am standing but I can see that a lot of people will prefer more dynamism to the robo-fisticuffs.

The portrayal of scale, weight, and force is one of my favorite things in the original, when the one Jaegar shoots its mace-hand at the end of this trailer that is like the opposite of all that.

At least now I understand why their pilot suits were changed, making the pilots more dynamic while controlling the Jaegar makes sense all things considered. They still look kind of blah though.

IMO it's 90% the fault of the audio. Without a proper mix of LFE, it will be a lot better.

Looks more fantastical than the first film. I say that about a film with giant robots and monsters, but this time they have whips and flails and whatnot with faster looking jaegers doing martial arts, just feels a little more anime.

So far so good, though.

Looks great. Main difference is that the fights all seem to be in daytime which makes it seem more cartoony. The actual colours and design are very similar to PR.

I'm such a rollercoaster of emotions with this movie. For the most part the robots looked good and my fears were gone, but then that lost shot of them standing side by side and shows how pasticy and fuck it looks like they're trying to sell me toys and I don't like that.

BUT THE FIGHTING LOOKED SO COOL!

BUT THERE IS A 15 YEAR OLD HACKER CHILD

WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO STAND ON THIS???

i'm not of a fan of these more limber and agile jeagers. one of my favorite aspects from the first film was how mechanical and weighty they felt.

then there was the original film's cinematography, where every shot was filmed in such a way that made it feel real, e.g. handheld cameras on the street or on the top of skyscrapers. there were none of those impossible shots that this film seems to have in spades

i am very disappointed :(

still, i'll be there day one :D

These echo my thoughts. Including the last one.

God, this looks so bad. Like something from Power Rangers. The robots and their scenes look dull, decolored and flat. Everything else is similiarly dulled. I guess loosing Del Toro will make that to a movie.

This right here, they felt like truly mechanical entities but on this one they feel like just standard modern cgi robots

Okay, after watching both trailers back to back, yeah the first PR does have a look and a weight to it that the trailer for PR2 seems to lack. I do appreciate more daylight in the new one though, but PR sure was a spectacle.

I'm still very much on board the hype train though.

This is looking more power rangers'ish than the previous one. I didn't enjoy the previous one, but I appreciatted the effort it made to sort of "ground" the concept of mechs. This looks to be moving away from that effort.

Also, the music doesn't fit the trailer at all.

Other than "Gipsy Avenger", do we know the names of the other Jaegers?

EDIT: nvm, found it http://screenrant.com/pacific-rim-uprising-jaegers-guide/
Even the new Jaeger names are lackluster. :(

Yeah, the "impossible camera" stuff and general shot composition is a bigger problem for me than the imperfect cgi. The original went to great pains to portray the Jaegars as massive and a lot of that came from simple camera work, but here that seems to be less a focus.
I mean the line up at the end with the Jaegars brandishing their weapons, that is shot like a straightforward hero shot, if you replaced that team of massive robots with The Avengers you wouldn't even need to change anything that is how little effort went into emphasizing their size.

Will rewatch on something not my crummy smartphone later but it looked pretty rough compared to the OG, and I’m not even really a fan of that one either after it disappointed on the action front.

It’s brighter at least so that’s cool but you can tell they went with a different VFX house instead of ILM this time around.

Here’s to hoping not everyone gets wrecked in 30 seconds and does some cool shit.

I dont see large as all fuck scale, nor weight, destruction at this scale has to look slow to us, but in here is all speed up and them robots are doing some insane shit, I mean I dig it but that sense of scale is lost.

Is it me, or did the jaegers look less realistic in this trailer? They had more weight to them in the first, you could see plates shaking when they moved, and had a more grimey look.

Here, they’re a bit more clean and moving limber and what not. I’m not saying too many and too clean is a bad thing, but it seemed a little off. I’ll take a second look to check.

Edit:

Yeah, jaegers look fine (except for the orange one and the grey and white one looking too clean). It just too many jaegers. It’s kind of overkill. But I’ll probably still watch it.

honestly looks pretty cool, I like the designs a bit more than when the figures were revealed. the Kaiju designs are awesome, glad they didn't shrink away from color.

is that one orange jaeger a direct reference to eva?

Looks excite. I understand the complaints about the sense of weight being lacking here, but if the film can work around that by being more fantastical (in a good way) I think I can live with it. I'm in.

Looks like trash. Transformers has more self control.

Looks generic. Sorry, this looks worse then a Transformer movie.
