Pacific Rim Uprising - Trailer 1

I'm curious where people draw the line between over-the-top anime mecha action and Transformers. To me, the defining trait of Transformers movie isn't that they move fast and do crazy action. It's that Transformers is an incomprehensible mess. Stuff I've seen in this trailer seems pretty comprehensible to me.

I don't think it's a difficult line to draw. Maybe people who can't see the differences don't want to.

I thought that was pretty much all around terrible, especially the song.

Jaegars look nice but yeesh, that was rough.

Oh Yeah!

Did he just step on those people. Fired.

Don’t think he cares. Looks like a patlabor situation where a construction Jaeger gets hijacked by a criminal and police Jaegers will stop it.

Its pretty difficult when the line itself is ill-defined. “They move fast” isnt a defining trait of the transformers movies. Might as well call Evas and Gundams Transformers.

From the trailer I get the impression that the action will be much faster. One of the things I loved about the first one was how slow and heavy the movements were.

Me too! The Jaegers had weight in the first movie and it made them feel different from Transformers, who move like acrobats.

Did.. did that Jaeger do a spin kick??!!

Wouldn't worry a gout the Cgi, it'll looks better in the final cut.

I disagree. Trailers are marketing - pure and simple. There have been many examples of how trailers include footage that isn't even in the final cut of the movie.

And marketing can have a negative effect.

This is the point: anything that can make you look forward to a film or other bit of media is calling on you to make the same mental jumps and speculation to decide "I might like this."

Decrying that the process can shockingly work in reverse is quite odd. Unless you jump into the hype threads to go, "Hey guys, we're not experts. Don't be too excited."

All that said, shit looks dope and Boyega is my man. All in.

I'll echo what others have said and I'm hoping the Jaegers retain the awesome sense of momentum and weight they had in the first one - hard to judge from this trailer if they have that same groundish feel.

Mostly just glad they made a sequel. First is one of the all time 'popcorn flick' greats.

I'm down with this. It looks stupid which is fine but more importantly it looks fun.
This also doesn't have ILM as the primary VFX house anymore.

Double Negative is more than capable, but I think they have a ton of stuff in-house right now and may not be able to devote as much manpower to this one to get all the effects shots at a high level. Especially if the budget is lower.

When ILM did the first one, they already had to overhaul their pipeline in order to make the film at the budget they were given.
I was wondering about that. Shame about ILM but not surprised considering they did the first one on discount already.

The aesthetics in the first film were much better.

That said, this movie looks ridiculous and dumb as hell: I'm IN!!!!

I honestly just want more mako mori. And even though it seems like she's in the movie, I was sad she wasn't shown in the trailer. She was the best part for me in the first one.

Looks great! I know a lot of people are going to bothered by the CGI, but I'm personally fine with it. It's risky that they went for a brighter look than the dark and broody tone of the first movie, but let's see what they do for it. I'm just glad they embraced how dumb the concept is and doubled down on the mecha anime resemblance!

Saw this when I watched Blade Runner last night. I dug the music. You all are crazy. It’s just a trailer. I doubt they’re gonna replace the entire soundtrack with 2Pac lol.

I dunno, leaning into the stupid seems like the right move for this franchise. I think that looked GREAT. I found the first PR 'just OK' thought the serious bits really dragged it down (and were very poor)

ehhh, is it just me or does this look cheaper than the last one, that was a pretty aesthetically unappealing trailer tbh. looks like a flop.

Boyega looks great though, Star Wars used him for comedic effect (pretty well) but he was once a badass in Attack the Block and I'm glad they got him more in that mode again.

mixed feelings

+Cast looks good and properly multinational again, which was a good thing about the beginning
hopefully they don't just kill half the cool characters immediately this time :(
+the more Eva-like robots are really cool looking
-did not like the song, hope the rest of the soundtrack is better
-the whip and flail weapons looked really dumb (in a bad way) imo

Yep. It's why the T. rex scene in Jurassic Park has aged much better than the Brachiosaurus scene.

That's a bit of an unfair comparison though: T.rex was the star of the show, and her CG scenes were given more attention, such as they daytime kill of the Galliminus.

But yeah, night can help with CG (though sometimes it can make it look unnaturally clear and shiny if not properly composited)

They’re in the Bandai Robot Damashii line and they’re already leagues better than the NECA ones. They’ll have proper articulation since the RD line generally does.

And there’s a Gipsy Avenger HG model kit on the left.
Holy fuck these are siiiiiiiick

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Just saw the trailer. I'm excited. Hope it turns out as just as good as if not better than the first. I loved the first one.

i'm not of a fan of these more limber and agile jeagers. one of my favorite aspects from the first film was how mechanical and weighty they felt.

then there was the original film's cinematography, where every shot was filmed in such a way that made it feel real, e.g. handheld cameras on the street or on the top of skyscrapers. there were none of those impossible shots that this film seems to have in spades

i am very disappointed :(

still, i'll be there day one :D
