Capcom end FIFA 13’s run at the top as ‘DMC’ (Devil May Cry) debuts at No1.

It may be a quiet time of year, but it still represents Capcom’s first All Formats No1 since ‘Resident Evil 5’ back in week 13 2009 (Resident Evil 6 could only manage No2). Released on Tuesday and developed by Cambridge indie developer Ninja Theory (the first time a Devil May Cry title has been developed outside of Capcom), DMC sells over a third of what ‘Devil May Cry 4’ did at launch when it also reached No1, back in week 6 2008.
‘FIFA 13’ (-40%) drops to No2 ahead of ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ (-26%), while ‘Far Cry 3’ (-49%) falls 2 places to No4. There is no change at No5 and No6 with ‘Need for Speed Most Wanted’ (-35%) and ‘Just Dance 4’ (-18%) both non-movers. ‘Football Manager 2013’ (-16%) is up one place to No7, while sales of ‘Hitman Absolution’ (-50%) are cut in half, knocking it from No4 to No8. The Top 10 is rounded off by ‘Skyrim’ (-20%) at No9 and ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ (-21%) at No10. DMC is the only new release to chart this week.

Still no WiiU title in the Top 40 and only Mario games on 3DS charting. When keeping it real goes wrong....
 
Am I reading that right? DMC4 sold three times better than DmC on launch week? Damn.

It's gonna do terribly in Japan. I guess America will have to save it.

Oh dear. Now even a #1 doesn't mean much, at least at this time of year.

To be fair, it's been five years. Many people who were in to the franchise on the PS2 days have likely moved on, and the young 'uns are in to pure shooters.

Personally, I'm enjoying it. A lot. And I didn't like the demo.
 
SiNG Party came out on Wii U last week, guys. It bombed. Not even in the Wii U top 10. NG3 is down from 5 to 7 in the same chart.

Also: Some of the weird additions in the second half of the chart make me think numbers this week are bloody awful.
 
I think DmC selling a third of what DMC4 did, whilst still nabbing the top spot on chart, say more about the market than the perception of the game amongst gamers.
 
The number 1 selling title sold a third of it's predecessor?

UK MARKET IS DOOMED: CONFIRMED.

Or it's January and nothings going to sell that well. That narrative is less fun though

I thought the top 5's of each platform were quite telling of the very different userbases on each platform.

1, NFS: Most Wanted
2, CoD Blops Declassified
3, LBP Vita
4, AC3 Liberation
5, FIFA 13

3DS:

1, Mario Kart 7
2, New Super Mario Bros 2
3, Paper Mario Sticker Star
4, Super Mario 3D Land
5, Mario & Sonic London 2012
 
Looking at these charts, the Wii U can't have sold more than 5-6k throughout January, surely? Its second full month on the market.

Pathetic.

It's quite possible, given estimates of how the lowest titles in the top 40 sold this and last week, and Nintendoland not making the list.
 
I have a feeling that Mario and Sonic at the Olympics could be the WiiU's Killer App if it gets released this year...
 
Some people would suggest taking a recognised IP and changing it beyond recognition is a bad idea compared to you know...launching a NEW IP.

I would imagine it's because the people buying the Wii U, at least in the UK market, aren't the same audience that made the Wii a success and that a game like SiNG Party is geared towards. It's selling to the Nintendo enthusiast.

Given the bottom of the chart and that no one seems to want the Basic unit I think that's a reasonable assumption. This and last week it can't have been more than 1-2K/week.

I'm pretty sure a hardcore oriented DmC would not have sold much more than this one.

It launches on January and the UK game market is not in a good spot right now. Also it's not like other character action games are selling tons of copies right now.
 
This says as much about the market there as it does Wii U right? The top is barely above water and the bottom is in hell.

Woah man, LBP and NFS are great. I'd love to have something like LBP on me at all times- I got the PS3 game, but I never play it.

That 3DS list is a bit disconcerting. I know Mario does real well, but jesus, even Sticker Star? Guess that's what happens when the last great 3DS game was a downloadable puzzle game released in November... :/

Really hoping Luigi's Mansion and Fire Emblem do well.
 
Do we know how DMC4 debuted?

Oh yeah, Paper Mario that high in chart is very strange, and probably a big sign that the numbers around the last positions are low.

all mario and sonic games sold well so this is kind of a given
sega will probably not make it (they missed out on a generations wiiu port which would have enjoyed healthy sales too)

Just give it time. I'm sure they'll patch it and free up 512MB eventually.

Generations didn't do that well, and SEGA's in cost-cutting, risk-averse mode, I imagine. So that's why Generations U never happened.

Mario and Sonic in Rio? It's already happened, way I see it.

For what it is worth I saw it in hmv and it was already 19th on their 360 chart, so I really don't think it has sold well at all.

Guess the DMC old guard will be happy.
 
simple fact is times are hard for the people on lower income here in the uk, food and petrol (gas) prices are constantly high and creeping up all the time and after christmas everyone is more broke than usual. Games are a luxury and its not surprising there uk market is pretty low right now.

I think sony and MS would do well to hold off next gen consoles as long as possible, because if there as expensive as PS3 was at launch they will bomb hard.

Some probably will, but those old guard fans are really in a no win situation. If it bombs then Capcom will likely shelve the series for several years while they figure out what to do with it, and if it sells well they'll continue to let NT develop it.
