Was a little worried about Zelda's sales beforehand considering how dead the Wii has been for the last year, hopefully it still manages to keep up a normal level of sales for the series.
Zelda debuted at <100k? I think this is a pretty good indicator that starving your diehard fanbase for a year is detrimental to retaining customers.
FIFA 12 is 5th in the All Formats chart and Skyward Swords is 7th, so that would imply it is below 55K.No, since half would be 80k, but FIFA 12, which is fifth, did 55k.
Well, according to this FIFA 12 is at 55K:

Eh. As said by BKK, Twilight Princess did 65k, and that was GC + Wii IIRC... or was it only counting the Wii version?
However, for Zelda, I would wait till the end of the Holidays, since it will be helped by Christmas and much more massive advertising (weren't people saying that Zelda saw an increase in advertising AFTER the release? )
About Mario, do we have some even sparse info about what the two Galaxy did?
It was online only in the sense retail had all abandoned Gamecube at that point (you could say that was 2003 actually...) though my local GAME got a few copies and had a special offer around Christmas of the game and a Gamecube for £50 (getting rid of their used Gamecubes really). That would be Wii only. The GCN version was only sold online and so, would not be counted (but it's sales were nothing more than statistical noise in comparison anyway)

Nintendo occupy the next two spots in the All Formats Chart as new entry Super Mario Galaxy beats Zelda to become the fastest selling Wii game, debuting at No5 ahead of Dr Kawaskimas Brain Training which is a non-mover at No6 despite a healthy 62% rise in sales.
Owch. That has to be one of the worst debuts for a Zelda ever! Legs or not, that's is a major bomb. And Mario did even worse. Nintendo must have really lost mindshare in Europe, big time.
Well, that or it got seriously overshadowed. Either way, Zelda has fallen.
"Aaaaaah, classic BurntPork"

Also, pretty much every Nintendo game gets the majority of their advertising after release, so an increase in sales isn't unlikely.
Who are you quoting? Tell me so I can kill him/her.
And there's no way to spin Zelda debuting that low into something good. That's less than half of what TP debuted at, despite having 10x the userbase. It bombed.

How do you know it did less than half of what TP did?!? O_O
Didn't someone say that TP debuted at over 100k?
Week Sales
1 85k
2 60k
Total 145k
No, that was the Wii.
TP did 65k with 105k Wii.
I wonder if the requirement for MotionPlus hurt Zelda any? I would expect many owners of older systems still have no MP (I know I don't!)
I think it was more the fact that a lot of Wii owners have moved on, while others are dormant.
Yeah, it's a shame. Would be interesting to see some breakdowns. The Guardian Top20 is VERY late as well, lol.
Releasing Zelda on Wii is as dumb as releasing TP on GameCube only would have been. Motionplus or not, they should have ported it to Wii U as a launcher.
Wii U with Wii U Sports and Zelda SS Special Edition as free pack-ins.

Kirby Wii
if they did that, don't you?
Nintendo was probably thinking about moving SS to Wii U but they don't have any third party games to carry the system either.
So... instead of trying to do what they can to change that/salvage what's left of the Wii by releasing titles like Skyward Sword on it, they should instead just completely abandon it and essentially have no active console at all until sometime after June, when they're able to launch the Wii U? Not to mention the added cost of having to go back and rework Skyward Sword so that it would be compatible with the tablet controller (meaning pretty much taking out the MotionPlus stuff), in order for it to actually be able to function properly as a Wii U launch title. No, the Wii might not be in the best of shape right now, but letting it go without any sort of big holiday title and moving any similar titles in the next 7+ months to the Wii U definitely wouldn't have been a good move. It's still too long until the Wii U's expected launch for Nintendo to have been able to get away with something like that.I doubt Zelda is going to move many consoles, so who cares?

Zelda and Mario were only out two days for this one, right? That's probably why. Really hope they didn't bomb...
I'm happy with SR3, though.
Yeah, but is Halo.
I guess sales were better in US.

NA's last big Wii game would've been Donkey Kong Country: Returns. Running on the same fumes for 2 years is outrageous, even for Nintendo. If they had third party support they might've reconsidered.
They needed 'something' big this november. Now you could argue that it might've been a better idea to keep Pikmin on Wii for holiday 2011 and Zelda for Wii U in 2012. But on the other hand, the game was build around the Motion Plus and they already flip flopped twice during the development(change of art style, change of control scheme(removing motion plus only to put it back in again)).
"But it's Halo" is also what people said about Halo Wars. Halo fans might be more savvy than the normal COD buyer.

I dont think that Nintendo would have justified the extra development cost on moving Skyward Sword to the WiiU. Skyward Sword was in developement already in 2008, so they had gotten pretty far on the game. I'm not sure that Nintendo would just have upscaled it to 720p/1080p resolution and released it on the WiiU.
France:
Week 45, 2011
01 (__) [PS3] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard)
02 (__) [360] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard)
03 (__) [360] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda)
04 (__) [PS3] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda)
05 (__) [PS3] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Edition Collector (Activision Blizzard)
It's not very often you see a 360 sku selling more in France.
I never tracked Nintendo numbers but is it the weakest Zelda start? It has sold like a niche game (and at the moment it is probably).
