Speaking to retailers this morning, Nintendo Switch has sold around 80,000 units in the UK during its opening weekend.
That's double the number of Wii U consoles that were sold during its opening weekend (40,000 back in late 2013).
It's not as high as 3DS' debut, which was 113,000 according to Nintendo. Nor does it come close to the PS4 launch (250,000) or the Xbox One launch (150,000).
However, it is a strong and steady performance for the machine. There wasn't a huge number of units pushed into the channel (some units were sold out at major retailers) and the marketing and PR campaign was truncated and arrived late in the day. Retailers tell us that they were very happy with the launch and one store even declared: "Nintendo is back."

The WiiU installed base in the UK was bad to begin with, and it's now a dead system for a while. Not really comparable.

i know it is not exactly comparable, but i am sure there are way more WiiU than Switch and considering Zelda is a must have for nintendo fans, i was hoping that those WiiU owners that still haven't bought a switch had bougth Zelda for WiiU.
And personally i dislike this crossgen Nintendo is doing with Zelda.... not the first time they do this.

We can calculate quite a bit:

Horizon > NMS
Zelda < Horizon
Zelda/0.75 = total software sales which should give an idea of hardware sales

EDIT: beaten by numbers

Good start for Horizon and Zelda. More interested in seeing numbers for Switch hardware. The attach rate is as pathetic as the launch lineup given that 75% of sales are Zelda lol.

Edit: And there is a figure. Its a good not great start if you pretend its not in any way shape or form also a 3DS successor, its a little more mediocre if your perspective is it replaces both.

Really great for both Zelda and HZD. But we knew that HZD would outsell Zelda by a wide margin thanks to PS4 huge user base

Well I would say "strong" compared to Wii U, weak otherwise, below 3DS, we must remember they had to reduce the price soon after launch.

Better than I thought. (I thought it'd launch more or less in line with the Wii U launch, doubling it is surprising)

Kinda bad really. Switch is pretty much a 3ds successor as well and as such sees the market collapse by 40 000 units. If its a console it is up on Wii U by 40 000 units but below Xbox One by 70 000.

As these charts indicate, the WiiU is not a viable platform in the market for quite a while now. I'd assume that a big chunk sits put away in closets. The hardcore are exactly the people who rush out to get a new console at launch, the Nintendo fans would never habe bought it on a dead platform, when a new hotness is available.

Not the same situation at all. It won't happen.
You're probably right, Nintendo didn't officially cut wii u but not long after launch a lot of shops went nuts and were selling the core unit wii u below £150 while stock lasted, I really worry about the switch here Nintendo have been doing worse here with wii u and 3ds than most everywhere else.

I agree about Nintendo Switch having a strong launch in the UK given the circumstances (here a comparison table), now we will have to wait how it performs during the next weeks, months. With the poor line-up that basically consists of just one game sales should slow down very fast though.

There isn't any upcoming new retail game in March, and the next big title will not be released until April 28.

Code:
[B]Nintendo Hardware UK Launch Sales:[/B]

Game Boy Advance - 67,000
Nintendo GameCube - 69,000
Nintendo DS - 87,000
Nintendo Wii - 105,000
Nintendo 3DS - 113,000
Nintendo Wii U - 40,000
Nintendo Switch - 80,000

Upcoming Nintendo Switch releases:

March: Nothing
April: LEGO City Undercover (7th), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (28th) and Puyo Puyo Tetris (28th).

3ds launched also in March. And I don't think there were stock issues in UK.

The article talks about stock issues.
And, 3DS was Nintendo's biggest launch in UK, so doing a tad lower isn't really a bad score. Better than GBA/GC/Wii U/similar to DS.

Ok, that's not bad at all as a launch for Switch in UK, given also how it seems stock was limited (at least, according to GameIndustry.biz). Yeah, quite distant from PS4 and One launches but those happened in the Holiday season. Also, it's a bit lower than 3DS's debut, but that one was strong as well...the real problems for 3DS came in the weeks after the launch.

So...

Zelda had a 75% attach rate .. on switch.
Switch sold 80k.
60k. Zelda copies on switch.

78% sales of Zelda were on Switch
22% on WiiU..

Who can do the math? ;o)

Great compared to Wii U but compared to PS4, not so good. I hope it does well long term.

Double of Wii U? And Wii U launched during the holidays too. I didn't know Wii U launch was that bad.

75% is not the attach rate. It means for every 75 copies of BOTW for Switch, 25 copies of other Switch games were sold.

The fact that you see it as the 3DS successor doesn't mean everyone does. It is also nowhere in the same ballpark price wise.

As pointed out, that is wrong. Zelda did not have a 75% attach rate, it just accounted for 75% of all switch software sales. Your calculations just assume that every switch owner only bought 1 game.

Wii U launch was absolutely dreadful. IIRC, Wii U obtained to reach 80,000 only at the end of the year, around one month after its release date; again, during the Holiday season.
