PC gaming has won - True HD graphics for the masses

GillianSeed79 said:
So....I'm not insane? I guess I don't have an eye for it. Like I look at Dennis4K's screengrabs and I'm like, fuck, how the fuck do I get my shit to look like that. Then you hear stuff from reviewers like Witcher 2 is the most graphically impressive game I've ever seen in my life. Then I boot that up and I'm like, yeah, that looks good, but not my god I've seen the fabled Toy Story graphics in action. I'm so going to get killed by PC Gaf BTW.

No need for killing. Youre just a dude with way too high expectations. I thought the same thing about The Witcher 2. Now if we compare them side by side with the X360 one, theres a huge difference there, graphics wise. But the game is great and more people will experience it on a console. Everyone wins! Except the ps3...

As a member (I guess....?) of PC gaf, we're so annoying.

And it's hardly for the masses, the masses don't upgrade their video cards.

If you're not willing to invest in the necessary equipment and steps needed to see the big differences between console and PC, then you can't exactly complain that PC games aren't what they are hyped up to be. It has to be a like for like environment in which the two experiences are compared, not big screen PS3 gaming versus hunched-over-a-17"-laptop gaming. That's like buying a top of the line Onkyo receiver and outputting through $10 stereo speakers.

are you that unimaginative?

My computer is hooked up to my TV at all times, I don't even have a monitor. I just surf the net on my couch with a wireless mouse. But it looks kind of ridiculous having my desktop sitting there next to the TV, and I can't imagine most people would want to have an ugly set-up like that in their living rooms.

You can get some pretty slick looking HTPC cases if that bothers you.

Thats some low self esteem...

I have a laptop, but it's always hooked up to the tv. Hell, it's hooked up right now, I'm typing from my wireless keyboard, on the recliner in my bedroom! Comfy couch.

That's why you use a super long HDMI cable and bury it under the rug. That way you can have your PC far away from your entertainment center, so as not to cramp its style.

I recently got a 560 TI as well. It's an awesome card for the price, but it pisses me off that they went mini-HDMI only and didn't provide an adapter for my existing HDMI cable.

Sounds like a good idea, but my point about the PC/TV hook up is just that it's too much of a hassle for a casual person to want to do, when they can just use a console. I don't think the average gamer would bother.

Comfy Couch PC Gamers, I have a question.

What are you guys placing your keyboard and mouse on when you play?

Does anyone have any suggestions good couch setups for keyboard/mouse?

I don't want to use a coffee table.

I played games for 2+ years on my PC and a console lying in the bed.

I've heard of people doing this, but it seems uncomfortable to me. I wouldn't want to lay in bed all day like I have polio or something.

My ideal set up is at my nook with a comfy chair, KB/M, headphones and 1080p screen. No limitations and total immersion, it's perfect.

I have a little folding table, all folded up, it fits perfectly on the armrest of my recliner. So I can play reclined, like a boss. Plenty of space for the M+KB.

I could probably find a rolling swivel table kind of setup, but this works fine.

I actually use th keyboard on my lap most of the time, though I actually use the pad for 80% of PC games.

Yeah seriously...nit picking at PCs by saying a GTX 560 is going to be obsolete in a year is not a good argument.

It's not an argument at all, it's factually incorrect. There are people still gaming with much lesser cards like the 8800 GT (or a Radeon equivalent) and will still be able to play games with it a year from now.

I have a notebook lap table. It's cushioned on the bottom, and on the top it's got a mousepad like surface on both and left and right side. Has a cushioned wrist rest too. Paid like 30 bucks for it at Staples.

My HDTV is my main monitor and i have it on my desk, yup.

The thing is, i dont even use it as a TV anymore. I watch whatever i wanna watch, when i want, from my computer

I mean of course it could still run game just fine at probably medium-ish settings 1 year from now, but it will still be outdated by that time by faster cards & not be as state-of-the-art as of now.

I use a TV stand, to which I affixed a wooden piece that allows my keyboard to hang about two-thirds of the way off the side. This gives me plenty of space to move my mouse around. I fashioned these little hooks to keep the keyboard in place. Still, it's not great for extended play sessions, as you have nowhere to rest your elbows. Sometimes I just find myself bringing in a card table to use instead. Still, it's great for light gaming, browsing the web, and also eating!

I know you're just trolling, but my mid to high range card is well over a year old and I run most games on high settings with all the bells and whistles at 1080p. I'm sure that I will continue to hold that standard as long as this console generation exists, excluding maybe a few hardware pushing PC exclusives. TL;DR: your opinion is wrong.

What? No. The 5850 is nearly two years old and no one with that card is using medium-ish settings for anything.

id love to buy a mobo there as well but im scared of passing it through the border. cpu and gpu are small enough, but a motherboard..

where is he staying? Yonkers is outside the city. you'd be better off ordering thru newegg and paying for speedy UPS shipping. newegg is very quick with shipping.

I think he was being sarcastic? Yes, I have a laptop, but it also has an HDMI port, which is hooked up to my 47 inch 1080p Samsung. I think where I faltered is that I bought an HDTV too soon. $1,600 for a Samsung LCD. I really want an LED or 3DTV, but I just bought this TV a few years ago. The only thing I'm missing is a surround sound system, but I live in an apartment building with tiny ass walls. I'd probably have the cops called on me the second I set up a surround sound system.

I still run everything on high with my 3+ year old hd4870... (that was pretty cheap even back then)
At least in every multiplat game.

Exclusives that push graphics I'll just play with settings dialed down a bit, or at 1280x1024 (crt monitor ftw, no problems with scaling) to keep a good framerate.
Still looks loads better, runs more smoothly, has better IQ and runs at higher res than any console game at those settings.

The outdated argument is so bloody asinine.
As if buying hardware that is now outdated by 5 years (or outdated by 1-2 years at release for next gen and wii U) is somehow better.

I dunno, I just bought a GTX 460 last month and it can`t even play WoW at 60fps at max settings.

WoW is an extremely CPU dependent game. You can have the best GPU in the world and won't mean a damn thing once 20+ players are onscreen at the same time.

Er, my 5670 hits medium-ish 1080p on almost every game. Pretty certain the 5850 would.

yeah, I was getting fat + my TV is too small to not be owned in BFBC2 on PC as people play sitting near their monitors.

Im sorry I just had to laugh, though everything you said is right. Nearly got into a argument about this in another thread, but just didn't have the temerity to see it through, theres only soooo much silliness I can handle.

Pretty much. Plus the shitty keyboard and mouse set up for shooters

The ignorance pains me. If you like your DS3 or your 360 controller, then do like any other PC gamer does and plug it into your fucking PC and play with it. That you guys haven't picked up by now that control wise PC >>>>>>>> everything due to have EVERYTHING as an option is ridiculous. Never mind the ludicrous insinuation that KB&M is bad for shooters.

Fredescu said:
I mean, no 5850 owner would need to go as low as medium.

Oh, my bad. I thought for a second that's what you might have meant, but then I got into a defensive state.

Yeah, 5850 owners would be smooth sailing in anything that's not moodded Crysis or GTA IV. And even then...

God bless the day WoW has a true 64-bit client. But yeah, seems like most people skimp out on the CPU, when it's actually a bigger factor for performance on a lot of games.

Grand Theft Auto IV is another one that comes to mind.

You bought a samsung LCD , there is your problem (I did so too btw, LE46a656 by any chance?)

Those pieces of shit have massive input lag, struggle with varying framerates and have a terrible motion res (8xx vertical res).
It really is an awful tv for gaming (I knew this as I went into buying this , but since it was only for light ps3 gaming and it was quite well suited for blu rays I bought it anyway).

wow (cata beta) ran at 60+ fps on my summer of 2008 phenom II 720BE, 40+ in raids.

Turn shadows from ultra to very high and your framerate will nearly double.
After that, draw distance, spell effects and weather effects are the biggest resource hogs. (all 4 are gpu reliant settings).
Wow needs a good cpu ,but everyone who bought one (and didn't get a celeron or atom ) in the last 4 years has a good cpu.

And yeah the K/M for shooters comment has to be the dumbest thing I've read on gaf so far.

how much would free shipping take to get to NYC? he's staying right near central park

From Newegg to NYC? Newegg has a warehouse in New Jersey that they'll ship from if they have the product available there, so it would take like less than 3 days with the free shipping option. Maybe

I used to be a console only gamer for the longest, but once I built my PC, I haven't cut on my PS3. I think what I like the most is the convenience. Being able to switch games without having to change discs and the lightning fast load speeds of having everything on the hard drive instead of using a disc was well worth the cost of admission. Even more amazing are the constant sales on PC.

Yeah, I really need a new TV. Shit looked awesome like four years ago, but now it looks like a washed out blurry mess compared to modern HDTV's. I'm holding off to see if 3DTV's drop in price. I'd so drop a few hundred bucks on a godly Panasonic plasma, but I don't want to be in the same situation three years from now.

I hook up my PC to my 50 inch flat screen a lot. It's in my room though and my computer case is 50 years old or something. But I don't care how it looks, just how it performs.

Finaika said:

Since gaming laptops always have heavily downlocked/stripped gpu's with deceiving names, and phenom II cpu's were amazing value back then, most likely yes.

E.G: gtx460 for desktops is a very capable midrange gpu, while the mobile version is gimped into oblivion.
It's kind of disgusting how misleading the naming for laptop gpu's is.

If your friend can get to one of the Microcenters in NY, they most likely will match newegg prices. The one down here in VA has told me they will typically match anything from newegg unless it would mean taking a loss (usually not the case).

Just another option for you if you don't want to mess with trying to ship to someone who's only in town visiting...

would there be any sort of problem if that's the case besides the package arriving when he's not around? (wich im guessing they'll leave a notice and he could pick it up by the post office)

also microcenter is giving me a $40 tax when i select "in-store pick up" while in newegg nothing like that comes up

sorry for derailing so bad
