PC gaming has won - True HD graphics for the masses

Alright, so I'm taking back everything I've said in this thread and any other PC gaming thread. Fuck PC gaming. I've just waste an ENTIRE DAY off trying to get some graphical mods to work in both Half-Life 2 and Crysis (switched to the other after I gave up on the first). Those games don't look that great on their own (especially HL2), so IMO there's no point in playing them on PC unless you mod 'em up. Too bad everything is incompatible with everything. Not only can I not get the mods to work, my Crysis install became completely corrupted and I had to delete the game and re-download from Steam. I've literally spent 7 hours trying to get this shit to work, and I'm still left here with nothing. I could have just played a game for 7 hours. Ugh.

So yeah fuck PC gaming up the ass. I'm too OCD to play a game at anything less than the absolute best it can possibly look. With consoles my brain can rest because I know there's nothing I can do to increase IQ. With PC games I waste SO MUCH TIME fiddling with the settings, trying to squeeze out every last ounce of performance -- assuming if the game I'm playing does happen to work. Fuck that. I'm sick of spending more time preparing to game than actually gaming.

Maybe I'll sell my GPU on eBay. I'm done with this bullshit.

Just go into the game and turn up all the nobs to high and play if you want to play, should take about 2 seconds. If you don't want to "pimp your ride", then don't. I just played through like half of doom at original resolution in a dosbox from steam.

User error, installing graphical mods for both of those games is extremely easy. oh and all the graphical mods for HL2 just make the game look worse.

Should probably just install and play it. It's not tough, you do it with consoles all the time. You even get to crank the graphics to max and enjoy that. This is part of why I don't bother with user-created mods most of the time.

That said, both HL2 and Crysis hold up just fine on max settings.

Ha. I'm sure if he manages to get the mods to work, and sees the glorious results of his blood, sweat and tears, he'll quickly revert back to his previous stance.

But yeah, I've made a few failed attempts at the more difficult mods like Morrowind 2011. It certainly can be frustrating, but pays off the end, and more importantly, you could always just play the damn game. Flashy visuals are only the icing on the PC cake.

Secondly, Crysis is one of the easiest games to mod. I'm baffled by how you had any issues.

Now a game like Oblivion, that's a cunt to mod.
Oblivion was easy as shit to mod. Download Oblivion Mod Manager => install mods. I never had an issue with that and I ran a shit-ton of mods. Crysis seems easy, until the shit you installed doesn't play nice with the other shit and your game crashes. Then you attempt to remove the culprits only to further fuck the compatibility even worse, until it gets to the point that you BSOD, restart, and can no longer even open the game.

It's amazing we had the exact opposite experience. With Crysis it's a simple matter of copying a few files, but FUCK that Oblivion mod manager. I downloaded gbs of stuff, installed it all, read pages of readmes, got everything in the right order, loaded up the game and half of it didn't want to work and the other half didn't look right.

I gave up trying to mod Oblivion after a very infuriating morning.

I didn't throw a hissy fit and threaten to sell my GPU, though ;)

You´re lucky then. I tried installing some of the common mods on Oblivion. Took hours to download (including quarks texture pack) and finally couldn´t even start the game. Even tried turning off all mods and the game was still unstable.

Same thing happened to me. I downloaded and installed a ton of files and got the manager going, but the game wouldn't even launch. I think I was in a little over my head, but I refuse to play it until I've overhauled it. It's not even about graphics, though, I've just played it so much that I need to make it fresh again.

A lot of graphical mods blow.

But man, I have no clue how you made your PC BSOD trying to get graphical mods installed with those two games.

You'd have to be crazy to argue that modern consoles can hold up graphically against modern PCs. I certainly spent a while just loading up high-end games on my new PC when I got it several months ago to see the differences. Arkham Asylum in particular was a pretty big leap. Still, after the New PC glow wore off, I went right back to playing 90% of multiplat releases on consoles. Not worth the headache the majority of the time.

Care to elaborate as to the headache?

Scooters are so much better. Because you don't have to worry about going fast on them.
Totally, once I had bad reception on my car radio, and I forgot how to turn the knob on my central heating so it was kinda cold in the car on the way to work.

With my scooter I don't have a radio , or a roof, or heating so I don't have to worry about all that stuff when I drive it to work in the rain at 6 am on a winter morning.
It's such a burden off my shoulders, you know.

Two biggest things for me in terms of pc gaming has been the standardization of the xbox controller across nearly all games as well as Steam.

I need to upgrade my video card... but I want to wait to some of the next gen consoles come out (I want my computer to be better). It sucks though because my current card isn't cutting it with the 512MBs of RAM. :(

Doesn't todays PC graphics card blow the shit out of next gen consoles offering?

@SlaughterX

you could buy a GTX 580 and it will definitely be better than whatever is in the next gen of consoles (PS4, Xbox whatever). Now will the developers crank every last ounce of juice out of it so it looks better than next gen consoles well that's another story.

Yes, a GTX 590 is better than anything we will see in a next gen console.

No, that doesn't have any bearing on its performance in next gen games.

Console tech has stagnated so bad that you can pretty much run any game on max settings now on PC because PC's have gotten so far ahead of consoles its a joke. ps3/360/wii is actually holding everyone back.

A story where the answer is no :P

And I wouldn't exclude the possibility of a next gen console using a GTX 580. It's not likely, but if we don't see PS4 until 2013 it's quite plausible.

I just upgraded my graphics card from my trusty 8800GT to a slick GTX 560 Ti. And I'm literally having an eyegasm as I'm trying many of my games in DX11/10, 4XAA+, 50+fps: Metro, Assassins Creed, Crysis 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. COP, StarCraft 2, Just Cause 2, Company of Heroes. Holy shit WOW! just wow!

And to think that by years end a graphics card with the power of the GTX 560 Ti will probably be available for less than $200. And then to top it off this fact will combine with the awesome Steam holiday sales. I just can't contain my excitement at what this upgrade has shown me. This is the year the pc reclaims back its throne!

I have had the same revaluation.

But I still use my consoles for exclusives though.

The PC game I anticipate most won't even be on steam, and my current favorite game is exclusive to the PSP. So this isn't really true for everyone.

its not like the fab process available at the time would've been worth it for sony or xbox. they need a shrink so they can pack as much value per mm^2 on a true next gen console. Besides they went so gung ho on these consoles they cost tons to get solid now that people en mass can finally go grab one they have to make SOME money. Perhaps nintendo's latest will get them moving.

Ewww. I wouldn't like a setup like that because I play MMO's, and sitting that far away from the screen would make text uncomfortable to read.

And this why folks I stopped playing PC games. I still have Heroes of Might and Magic 5 save that crashes the game after I complete one of the scenarios in the campaign; I'll probably never finish that game at this rate.

Also, speaking of difficulty with PC gaming...

I bought Mass Effect off a steam sale awhile back.

It took me 3 hours just to get the sound to work. When I finally did, I found the game unfun at best. Not sure why anyone would want to play that series on PC.

I don't get how people spend so much time messing with settings. What settings? Put everything on high, enable triple buffering, and play the damn game. The most time I'll spend is a minute with RadeonPro if a game needs an AA profile.

I can understand the whole troubleshooting issue, but Mass Effect plays better on the PC than on the consoles, I don't get how you dispute that

Mass Effect 1 is AWFUL on 360, technically and control wise.

Something about aiming in the game felt...wrong to me. Can't really explain it. I blame mouse controls and the fact that it's third person.

So:
PC is ultra-expensive luxury afforded by few. It is an amazing experience when everything, absolutely everything is perfect, which is far and few between of those oppertunities. But you can't use it all the time, especially day-to-day, and is helplessly impractical.

PS3 will in it's own ways, smoke the PC when it's in it's own territories. It doesn't need a road, it can go elsewhere. At the very least, it can generate similar adrenaline type experiences.

360 is not as exciting, but instead, gets you day to day from point a to point b. May break down on you here and there, but it's very cost effective to get what you need it to do.

Wii is what it feels like an old man chasing kids that were on his lawn down the street. At the last moment realize it was a bad decision, but it's too late... he ventured too far into traffic and gets run over by an ice cream truck? I think?
Not at all I am PC exclusive myself but you lot take it to the next level hot damn.
I agree, and while I'm not PC-exclusive I do happen to put most of my free game time into my PC these days. Though it's been over a week since we had one of these threads, I assumed the world was coming to an end.

Gaming is kind of like alcohol. PC gaming is the top shelf MacCallan 18 or Glenfiddich, while the HD twins are Bud or Lowenbrau, and the Wii is like Zima or Smirnoff Ice.

What I'm getting at is that they are each for their time and place, and each have their adherents. Saying PC gaming wins makes no sense. Does Bugatti win when it comes to cars? Does The New Yorker win when it comes to periodicals?

Well, so what does winning mean? Appealing to the largest audience, or appealing to the people with the most refined taste?
