Hey, how does FFXII hold up to FFXIII? I'm really digging XIII's combat because of the quick pace even though it's turn based. Usually I can't stand turn-based RPGs, I find them boring and monotonous with their random dungeon battles but XIII has me hooked. Is XII close to XIII in the gameplay department?

You'd probably like FFXII more in that case. There's no separate battle sequences, all the combat occurs in the overworld as you're running around.

@tenchir

There's an option for 16:9 in the config menu.

It's selected already. It's under App Settings > GS Windows > Aspect Ratio. I still have that problem.

Is it just wishful thinking for me to imagine that Sony (or MS or Nintendo) would have no problem developing their own PC-based emulators and releasing it on Steam so that people can enjoy their old classics in updated glory?

I would double dip SO hard.

You have to set widescreen from within the game too.

They do that service on the PC and that's one less enticing feature their consoles have.

What does it matter if a customer buys their old games on console or PC? They're getting a sale either way. Some customers might even buy it on both.

A PC that will play recent games pretty well only costs ~$500.
If you're serious, it's well worth the investment.
I really shouldn't OC my 720, because when I'm at school, I'm on the 7th floor of my dorm, and it can get really hot, even in the middle of winter.

Pff, if we're going to have that mentality then they might as well port the Uncharted games to PC. Now that I'd love to see in 1080p with 4xAA/16xAF.

I'm talking about old games for previous gen systems.

Sorry, don't mean to jump on you. But it's obvious they want it as console exclusive features to entice people.

I think you'll like FF12 then. Its even less turn based than 13, and just as fast as 13 if not even more so.

I love the battle system in XII, I always found ATB to be awkward when controlling multiple characters, in 12 it's simultaneous and you only have to actively control 1 character.

However, unlike 13 it lets you control any of your characters so you can micromanage at any time.

I ordered International + ZJS for myself recently, can't wait :]

Got a question, been playing FFXII this way and it looks and runs great. However, I do have one problem that others don't seem to have: Alpha maps in the game are screwed up.

For example, when I enter new areas and the name of the area pops up, the name has a white rectangle around it that should be invisible. The same thing happens in a couple of other situations. For example, before the fight with firemane, it flies around. Again I see a square around it with white edges.

Anyone got an idea how to fix this?

Edit: As they say, a picture says more then a thousand words.

Ooh, yes this is the only major problem with FFXII.
I tried the alpha hack for GSDX, but it didn't seem to do anything.
I haven't gotten to one of those with the SVN build posted a few pages back.
I am absolutely enamoured with that game, btw.

I'm playing with a fairly recent svn build (from end of januari). Interestingly when looking for ffxii pcsx2 on google this is one of the first screenshots I find:

And yeah, the game is fantastic, but for some reason I've never been able to finish it. Hopefully I'll last to the end on this try.

Doesn't seem to be a problem with me either. Don't believe I have any special settings, using PCSX2 v9.6 rev 2186.

Some of the ingame models are pretty mind blowing

The newer builds are fairly different than the beta/stable versions.
I've noticed, in FFXII, that some characters in the cutscenes have ghosting, though that may be intended as a depth-of-field trick at lower resolutions that wasn't emulated before.
Seems like there should be a new beta soon.

What sound plugin are you using for FFXII? P.E.O.P. sounds the best from the 3 plugins I have, but It causes some odd stuttering in the FMV cutscenes.

SPU2 and zeroSPU2 both sound like garbage, although those plugins play FMVs pretty smoothe. Are there any other viable options for sound plugins?

I'm using SPU2-X(r2709) set to DirectSound.
r2711 doesn't seem to have the title card problem

Here's the other problem I was talking about:

School internet does not like uploading at all, had to do them 1 at a time and they took 4 minutes each.
It's not that the upload speed is ridiculously low, it just doesn't work right.

I can upload now!
(Pic#3 is a good reason for an HD port on PS3/360)
]

The ghosting is also an issue in FFX-2

(I find that X-2 looks best in 16:10)

Yeah pretty sure the ghosting is just a result of filters that do not look right beyond the native res.

God of War II:
For some reason, it crashes when you try to access a save point, even on the stable build.
Runs slow when above native res
Graphical Problems so far-
Major
- Ghosting (as seen in most pics) Not present at native resolution
Minor
- Wavy lines underwater (image 10)

Grade: C- (B- if saves worked)
Playable, but not at an enjoyable speed or resolution.

Shadow of the Colossus:
Special Settings:
-Need to enable 3x Speed Hack to get playable.
Graphical Problems:
Major
-None of note
Minor
-Possibly amount of bloom changing with resolution
-Minor shadow ghosting
-Minor geometry glitches
-Alpha problems? (Pic 13) Not sure if that's how it's supposed to look

Grade: B+
Playable at decent resolution, but a tiny bit slow.

I have a Phenom II x3 720 overclocked at 3.6Ghz. Can't wait to test out my games hooked up to my HDtv. :D

Are you sure I have a Phenom II X3 720 aswell. Can I play games at 720p fullspeed

I'm a CS major, but I'm only in my first year.
What programs would I need?
something to grab the source from their svn
MS visual studio 08 (you can probably get that trough msdnaa)
directctx sdk
nvidia cg sdk
GLEW

that should do the trick if i haven't forgotten anything

Thanks, I'll try it.
I found the compile guide on their site.

In the Hi-res PC thread, a lot of people use http://imagehost.org/ or abload.de but the latter is in another language. I haven't tried it myself, I use fotki.com, but that's the site I use for my personal pics as well. Its up to you, I just hate using imagevenue cause when you try to close a pop up, it brings you to a porn site.

I switched them all to Abload. I don't know German but it's very easy to use.

Question:

I notice that in my DQVIII, there is more aliasing going on that what other people are having in their screens in this thread. Was wondering if anyone could tell me some settings modifications I should make, because GSdx doesn't have any AA settings that I can see.

Using GSdx 1873 0.1.15

I don't have any AA enabled in GSDX, though I do have the internal resolution set to 3x, which improves IQ substantially. It might my Catalyst settings as well.
Also, don't use PNG images, their levels can get messed up when you upload.

Scaling is the same as supersampling aa

I'm guessing that you're running at native res? Turn that off and put the internal res higher (that's the resolution that the game renders at). If your cpu can handle it, also put scaling at 2x or 3x.

No, I'm running it at 720p.

And where is the scaling option? I don't see it in any options....

Only if you're outputting to less than the scaled resolution.
So it *can* be supersampling, but not always depending on the setup.

I can not get GT4 to work at all, even with the skip movie patch, it hangs on the first screen.
I've tried it in multiple revisions, though the ones with the new UI don't support patches.

The DX11 renderer is the same as DX10, but with more bugs.
I would use DX10 and the newest plugin pack
If scaling doesn't work, try forcing AA/AF in Catalyst.
If you feel comfortable using an SVN, S.L. posted a build a few posts up.

You can either set the internal resolution higher or if you have a Nvidia card and Nhancer you can set it to the same resolution and force MSAA with Stalker set as your compatibility. At least that is what I recall working. MSAA in FF12 looks really good but since DQ8 is rendered in a weird way SSAA makes it looks so much better. For anyone wondering, I've beaten DQ8 on PCSX2 so it is possible.
