Persona 5 Famitsu details

Totally. Back before Persona 4 was released, they were saying how the story was smaller in scope and wouldn't have an end-of-the-world plot. And it totally did.

Don't get fooled, people. This is still going to be a JRPG-ass JRPG. And that's okay.

Yusuke's description is already hinting toward an overarching plot.

Yeah when we start getting into the month stuff, I'm out. I thank you graciously for putting spoiler bars on that stuff.

I can't remember of any openly gay character in any japanese game, manga or anime, except when is used for comedy or fan-service
It's probably a cultural thing

Persona 2 IS had an optional male love interest and it wasn't done terribly. I'm hoping that's among the many things they're copying from said game here.

Fire Emblem already took the baby steps, now it's high time Persona did... what they already did 16 years ago.

It's interesting. And confusing. They have nothing against LGBT culture, sometimes even advocate/hint at it, yet they still refuse to recognize it publicly. Come to think of it, Shinji and Kaworu in the evangelion series is another perfect example for this cultural phenomenon.

Big game out by a japanese guy and that's all guys you talk about.
What a pointless connections to draw , might as well go to the conspiracy thread in OT.

....Your version of a 'conspiracy' seems rather flawed.

The game's slipped twice now, in large chunks of time in both instances.

Hashino's explicitly said that he wanted to add more and more things to the game since it's a 'new' debut in terms of the PS3 (and now PS4), and he wants fans to get the most out of it.

Meanwhile, Kojima has been known for similar styles of delays.

In terms of taking my comparison and making it into a 'conspiracy'.....lol.

Yeah, I won't let it spoil my enjoyment of the game but I'm gonna be very disappointed if they skimp out on LGBT characters again in 5. I believe there was this small hint in an older interview regarding this, I can dig it up if anyone wants me to, but it definitely wasn't anything conclusive and they might just mean something similar to previous games, as in half-assed.

That said I'm fully expecting to be disappointed. As long as things don't change in Japan as a whole it's gonna be rare for Japanese devs to go against the grain and I haven't heard of anything of the sort.

It has got to start somewhere though. And if Persona 2 could do it back in the day I don't see why it can't happen now. :/

I'm still super pissed at Arena about this by the way, to the point of making my own headcanon.

Oh man. Yeah. It really did feel like Arena was building up to Nyarly to the point where I feel like they might have scrapped things. Ultimax's story was such a disappointment in that regard. :(

That said I feel like such a return shouldn't happen in a spinoff fighting game after all these years so I'm mostly hoping its gonna happen in a mainline game, if not this one the next. It has gotta happen sometime right?

One of the many themes of the game is going against the constrictions held by society and breaking free of them. It would be the perfect time to have an LGBT character.

I want to know if it's Anne or Ann. It looks like it should be Anne ("ahn-nee") to me but even that article can't get it straight.

Thinking about it, the already revealed Persona covers:
-The thief (Arsene)
-The pirate (Cpt Kidd)
-The "free lover" (Carmen)
-The defensor of the poors (Zorro & Goemon)

What other historical / literary characters would feature the "died for what they believed in"?
Joanne D'Arc?

Call me a cynic, but I think the only reason that Nintendo included the option in the new Fire Emblem is because of the Tomodachi Life shitstorm. I don't think there's going to be a strong push towards Japanese developers anytime soon.

Depends if you count VNs as "games". but even then, there's a lot of gay and lesbian manga out there, and to a lesser extent anime.

And there's no real reason for Atlus to follow anything Nintendo or IS do. I'd just like to think that maybe, just maybe, in about... 20 to 30 years, Japanese games won't be as gross about the LGBT thing.

I know. One more reason why I'd be so disappointed, you'd think it'd be obvious...

You would think.

You would think.

I'm still mad about Persona 4.

...But yeah, this.

That said I know there are those leftover voice files that hint at a scrapped gay relationship in Persona 4 so they did get close there (but you gotta wonder why they scrapped it in the first place). Fingers crossed.

You referring to Naoto/Kanji? To be honest I never really got that why this belief is so prominent in the west. Playing the Japanese version really never made me feel like these characters were about that. Their conflicts were more driven by how society was pushing their gender ideas on them rather than them personally coming to peace with being gay or trans.

I sure would welcome them having a genuine attempt at the topic.
But it always feels kind of wrong to me seeing people refer to P4 as wimping out of the "issue" when it feels more like a misinterpretation.

They should add Ms. Japan 2015 as a character.

MLK

A lot of that is specifically pandering towards straight girls and guys.

Uh-huh. Almost never are they actually representative of real LGBT people/relationships/issues.

It's not "just" about Kanji not being gay and Naoto not being trans, because you're completely right in that not being what their character arcs were about. In my opinion, the worst thing about it was how the writing treated the very possibility of them being gay or trans as a really ridiculous and shameful thing. All they really did to rectify that was telling Yosuke to shut up every now and then.

They basically flat-out treated it as "not normal". In a game all about accepting yourself for who you are.

The theme they're going with is "picaresque heroes." Joanne D'arc and MLK are a far cry from picaresque.

Jun is back and hes....not pissed any more (for the better, really :P)

Unlike Persona 3 and Persona 4, Persona 5‘s story is designed to be like an “omnibus,” with no one specific enemy or criminal that the team chases after. Like a serial drama TV show, the Phantom Thieves change the targets they chase regularly.

A fundamental part of the story is the mystery behind a phone application called “Isekainabi” (“Otherworldnavi” or “Parallel World Navigation”). Using this app, the main characters discover the location of their targets and are able to infiltrate the other world known as “Palace” to steal the hearts of “rotten people.”

Coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool. Is it May yet?

That's the anime I was talking about earlier that is basically EXACTLY the concept of Persona 5.

Phantom Thief Jeanne

Maybe the VNs like SonoHana sure, and maybe even anime like K, but manga wise? No way. There are a lot of LGBT writers writing /drawing LGBT stories. Just because they don't pop up on Crunchyroll or Batoto or where ever doesn't meant it doesn't exist.

Well the theme is 'picaresque' so Joanne D'Arc wouldn't fit

For those too lazy to google. Picaresque is a kind of fiction or story that typically depicts rebellious main character generally of a low social class acting out in resilience to a corrupt society.

Picaresque heroes are generally also kinda rough/shady but ultimately admirable. Like Lupin, the gentleman thief. Joanne D'Arc is like a Catholic saint so that doesn't work at all.

I'm referring to the fact that Persona 2 Innocent Sin did it, Persona 4's beta content, and Naoto/Kanji to some extent yeah.

I totally agree on what you wrote about those characters and I do love the themes you're describing there, they actually are quite progressive on their own. But I do think it's handled poorly in P4, as Ludger Kresnik describes in a previous post, plus it's a unfortunate when that's the closest you get to LGBT themes in your game. The absence of acknowledged LGBT characters stands out all the more because of it.

The only real issue I had was how all the characters reacted to Naoto's shadow and the operation thing. It was clearly (at least to me) an analogy for GRS so having all the characters react with such disgust and disapproval was strange. I don't think Naoto was meant to be trans in the end, but the way they handled her shadow self was weird.

josie and the pussycats or some jabberjaw other characters i think?

Yukiko is daphne 2. Kanji is the dumber aspects of Fred. Chie is ummm... no idea

They're not supposed to be scooby doo characters. Just based on Hannah Barbera artwork, according to the artist.

There's plenty of direct scooby doo comparsions out there, though.

lol I was really confused, I was like the Scooby gang wasn't that big before right.

This is basically what's happening. It's not an uncommon delivery of a story, no need to freak out guys.
Yeah, I'm not really understanding the concern, myself. I mean, let's read it again:

I can't see how this hints at an episodic format at all, aside from the crime drama reference, which is directly about the plot itself rather than delivery format.

If you want to say that these slip ups have been similar and will result in similar disappointments in game content, then i can't really follow. 'These japanese producer said similar things so thus the same thing is gonna happen' is a pretty simple thought, and if that is enough logic to make it work for you then okay. But if you want to compare the story of a persona game to that of Phantom Pain you will have lost me completely as they are not close to comparison in content style and genre and all sorts of shit.
This line of argument is a really puzzling to me like people insisting on P5 being a 3DS game for no reason other then SMTIV existing.
