Still waiting for the announcement of a secret female protagonist option.
Totally. Back before Persona 4 was released, they were saying how the story was smaller in scope and wouldn't have an end-of-the-world plot. And it totally did.
Don't get fooled, people. This is still going to be a JRPG-ass JRPG. And that's okay.
Man, I hope each dungeon has its own opening credits sequence
I can't remember of any openly gay character in any japanese game, manga or anime, except when is used for comedy or fan-service
It's probably a cultural thing

Yeah me too...Okay. Blackout time starting NOW. I'm serious this time.
Big game out by a japanese guy and that's all guys you talk about.
What a pointless connections to draw , might as well go to the conspiracy thread in OT.
I'm still super pissed at Arena about this by the way, to the point of making my own headcanon.
Yeah, I won't let it spoil my enjoyment of the game but I'm gonna be very disappointed if they skimp out on LGBT characters again in 5. I believe there was this small hint in an older interview regarding this, I can dig it up if anyone wants me to, but it definitely wasn't anything conclusive and they might just mean something similar to previous games, as in half-assed.
That said I'm fully expecting to be disappointed. As long as things don't change in Japan as a whole it's gonna be rare for Japanese devs to go against the grain and I haven't heard of anything of the sort.
It has got to start somewhere though. And if Persona 2 could do it back in the day I don't see why it can't happen now. :/
Oh man. Yeah. It really did feel like Arena was building up to Nyarly to the point where I feel like they might have scrapped things. Ultimax's story was such a disappointment in that regard.
That said I feel like such a return shouldn't happen in a spinoff fighting game after all these years so I'm mostly hoping its gonna happen in a mainline game, if not this one the next. It has gotta happen sometime right?
One of the many themes of the game is going against the constrictions held by society and breaking free of them. It would be the perfect time to have an LGBT character.
Fire Emblem already took the baby steps, now it's high time Persona did... what they already did 16 years ago.
I want to know if it's Anne or Ann. It looks like it should be Anne ("ahn-nee") to me but even that article can't get it straight.
I'm more wondering what the inevitable evolved personas will be.
Somehow, I like the main Persona designs this time around. Maybe they won't turn out so crap after all when they evolve.
Depends if you count VNs as "games". but even then, there's a lot of gay and lesbian manga out there, and to a lesser extent anime.I can't remember of any openly gay character in any japanese game, manga or anime, except when is used for comedy or fan-service

Call me a cynic, but I think the only reason that Nintendo included the option in the new Fire Emblem is because of the Tomodachi Life shitstorm. I don't think there's going to be a strong push towards Japanese developers anytime soon.

You would think.

I'm still mad about Persona 4.

I really want to go on blackout, but I have little self restraint...Yeah me too...
Unless there's a new trailer...
Thinking about it, the already revealed Persona covers:
-The thief (Arsene)
-The pirate (Cpt Kidd)
-The "free lover" (Carmen)
-The defensor of the poors (Zorro & Goemon)
What other historical / literary characters would feature the "died for what they believed in"?
Joanne D'Arc?

A lot of that is specifically pandering towards straight girls and guys.
You referring to Naoto/Kanji? To be honest I never really got that why this belief is so prominent in the west. Playing the Japanese version really never made me feel like these characters were about that. Their conflicts were more driven by how society was pushing their gender ideas on them rather than them personally coming to peace with being gay or trans.
I sure would welcome them having a genuine attempt at the topic.
But it always feels kind of wrong to me seeing people refer to P4 as wimping out of the "issue" when it feels more like a misinterpretation.
That was P4

wait, who the heck are yukiko, chie, and kanji even supposed to be?

Unlike Persona 3 and Persona 4, Persona 5s story is designed to be like an omnibus, with no one specific enemy or criminal that the team chases after. Like a serial drama TV show, the Phantom Thieves change the targets they chase regularly.
A fundamental part of the story is the mystery behind a phone application called Isekainabi (Otherworldnavi or Parallel World Navigation). Using this app, the main characters discover the location of their targets and are able to infiltrate the other world known as Palace to steal the hearts of rotten people.
That's the anime I was talking about earlier that is basically EXACTLY the concept of Persona 5.Thinking about it, the already revealed Persona covers:

Episodic format is leaving me a bit cautious.

Maybe the VNs like SonoHana sure, and maybe even anime like K, but manga wise? No way. There are a lot of LGBT writers writing /drawing LGBT stories. Just because they don't pop up on Crunchyroll or Batoto or where ever doesn't meant it doesn't exist.Uh-huh. Almost never are they actually representative of real LGBT people/relationships/issues.

Well the theme is 'picaresque' so Joanne D'Arc wouldn't fit
For those too lazy to google. Picaresque is a kind of fiction or story that typically depicts rebellious main character generally of a low social class acting out in resilience to a corrupt society.

It's not "just" about Kanji not being gay and Naoto not being trans, because you're completely right in that not being what their character arcs were about. In my opinion, the worst thing about it was how the writing treated the very possibility of them being gay or trans as a really ridiculous and shameful thing. All they really did to rectify that was telling Yosuke to shut up every now and then.
They basically flat-out treated it as "not normal". In a game all about accepting yourself for who you are.
josie and the pussycats or some jabberjaw other characters i think?
Yukiko is daphne 2. Kanji is the dumber aspects of Fred. Chie is ummm... no idea
They're not supposed to be scooby doo characters. Just based on Hannah Barbera artwork, according to the artist.
There's plenty of direct scooby doo comparsions out there, though.
Yeah, I'm not really understanding the concern, myself. I mean, let's read it again:This is basically what's happening. It's not an uncommon delivery of a story, no need to freak out guys.
I can't see how this hints at an episodic format at all, aside from the crime drama reference, which is directly about the plot itself rather than delivery format.Unlike Persona 3 and Persona 4, Persona 5s story is designed to be like an omnibus, with no one specific enemy or criminal that the team chases after. ....Your version of a 'conspiracy' seems rather flawed.
The game's slipped twice now, in large chunks of time in both instances.
Hashino's explicitly said that he wanted to add more and more things to the game since it's a 'new' debut in terms of the PS3 (and now PS4), and he wants fans to get the most out of it.
Meanwhile, Kojima has been known for similar styles of delays.
In terms of taking my comparison and making it into a 'conspiracy'.....lol.
