How many of those 500 do you plan on ever playing again? How many of those 500 did you enjoy enough to keep forever?
You can’t trade those games, sell those games. You can’t recoup the cost of a game you didn’t particularly enjoy.
The thing is, it really doesn’t have to be that way, even in an all digital future. Why isn't there a reasonable digital trade in scheme? Why can’t we access the game licence keys for trade or resale? Why isn’t a software license cross platform? Why can’t I temporarily gift a game I’ve finished on a scheduled duration to a friend? Why can’t I lease or even sell my digital purchases directly to a 3rd party? It’s all dreadfully anti-consumer. I’m incredulous that some are willing to settle for digital ownership the way it has been implemented.
The truth is, we are giving up way too much for simple convenience. There are also questions regarding game preservation. Can we really rely on the major platform holders? I don’t think so.
It’s all so very depressing.
Very few, there's probably about 50 games I would ever play again. But I would not have traded or sold them anyhow, so your point is completely moot. You can't apply your situation to all people. I'm not buying those games for $79.99, a very large portion were bought for $10-30, and it's across 4 platforms. I can in fact share my whole library to others, they just need my login, in some ways easier than physical.
With 3 xboxes, multiple pc's, a ps5, and a switch in the house, digital is much easier. I can switch from one console to the next with zero worry about where a game is. My games never get stolen, they never get scratched, and they never don't get returned.
My kids play pc games and could care less for anything physical, I could read them your post above and they would gloss over.
As to relying on platform holders, who cares, when they drop support 20 years from now we can just easily emulate what we paid for on a toaster. Your post doesn't talk about digital benefits at all, and I would argue there's no reason to be depressed about it, you can still enjoy all your favorite games.
