Just curious, does anyone know how much it costs Sony to do an E3 show?
Is it in the hundreds of thousands or something much less.
I don’t mean just the cost of the rental space but also the expense of getting their people there, all the gear, basically their entire out of pocket expenses for attending this event.
If all this money can be better spent elsewhere then perhaps we can identify one of their reasons for not attending.

Part of me misses the old days when E3 was the big event where all things gaming came out swinging. Almost like a Deathmatch of who could create the most buzz and hype.

However E3 has really waned over the past couple of years. Shit is just less and less exciting. I would agree with previous post in that the advent (more like explosion) of the internet and social media as well as other potential avenues can be used to generate hype and buzz. E3 use to be the place you had to show off your new stuff, now its simply just "optional" .

They are skipping E3 because they want to announce the PS5 earlier, probably at their own event. Once revealed there will be nothing new to reveal at E3 and as people have high expectations at E3, I don't blame them for not wanting to look shit with no real new exciting news. From a business perspective I'd say fuck E3 too, let MS have it.

So they are already out of Money? 😂

Apparently it has nothing to do with a strategy or a lack of money, there have been bad waters between them for years now, nobody is sure what about.

Good! Save all the money you can to take a bigger loss per unit on the ps5.
Don't even bother with the PSM, just do a 5 minute longer State of Play showing spec sheets.

Are you going to post that in every Playstation thread you can find?
Just curious because you posted it already in the other thread...

You hate Sony, we get it.

Wow...the sony fanboys defending not attending is surprising actually. Hell at this point if Microsoft does announce a more powerful Xbox by by 3TFs theyll come up with something to defend it again. The facts are Microsoft is stepping up their game...(no pun intended). Back in 2013 when all the talk was "Sony is talking to the gamers", well now Microsoft is and people are still defending Sony. Any company who doesn't attend E3 is an FU, especially the size of Sony , its a celebration for the fans and to show off new things.
Nothing is surprising in this thread..

sony fanboys:
nothing to see here, move along!

Microsoft fanboys:
SONY IS DOOOOOOOOOOMED!!

reality:
times have changed, E3 is not what it once was and there are more shows like it, through out the year that is more public and has much bigger attendance of people actually at the event.
If E3 goes under there will be other venues to take its place.

Its a thread about E3 and you only want posts that fit your narrative.

And what exactly is my narrative?
Considering my last post in the thread was a joke post, I really don't see how it can be interpreted as a narrative.

This is what I meant by changing narrative. People used to cheer for Sony for having a bigger booth because they "cared about gamers" and spell doom for Microoft. Not the E3 is dead thing you are going on about right now.

That to you is a serious post?
You really believe I want spec sheets in a State of Play?
For fuck sake....

E3 is dying, nothing wrong with that, nothing lasts forever, other venue(s) will replace it (and be eventually replaced).
Gamescom is bigger, even PGW is bigger now, and they even have "Games" in the name, they are places much more suitable for news related to gaming consoles.
I never cared for where news are shown, I don't watch usually watch conferences. I'll catch up and watch the trailers here on GAF the next day. I'm not going to waste hours of sleep for a conference.

Personally I dont watch conferences myself. But will you say E3 is dying if next year Sony decides to enter E3 again ?

If the attendance keeps diminishing while attendance of other places keeps growing, YES.
Its not about Sony being there or not, it's about factual numbers.

No big deal.
Sony will do their own PSM either way.
Even if they don't, no losses if it means resources are allocated to more important areas.

When the gamers started to not care about the e3 shows?
Gamers don’t care about E3 they care about the news released at E3.
Can’t see why if E3 goes away another venue could not take over, that even have a higher attendance.
We used to get lots of news from TGS but that has also taken a back seat in newer times.
I’m not saying that I didn’t liked or even loved the noise around E3, but as I said times change and other venues are taking the spotlight.

You're not wrong, but the double standards in these discussions are very clear.

If ANY other big player in this market but Sony announces they're not having an E3 conference, it's doom and gloom. 'member when Nintendo dropped the live conference for prerecorded presentations? They have nothing to show! DOOOOOMMMMM!
Damn, even Sony fans were (briefly) worried when the big feature of a Sony conference was Gustavo Santaolalla playing the guitar in a hoodie in front of an awkwardly silent audience, before TLOU2's trailer was shown. What a difference from 2015's "year of dreams" shows!

But then Sony announced they were leaving E3 completely and suddenly it's OK, times have changed, Sony rules the market so they can afford to leave E3, they can do even better outside E3!
It's almost as if somebody believes PlayStation being there or not is what makes E3 relevant... or not.

That’s true to an extent. But didn’t Nintendo drop out around the time of the wiiU I can’t remember the exact time.. so there was a little more insentive to call for doom and gloom, though it worked out at the end and they are successful now again. And even after there new found success they haven’t returned with a keynote at E3.

If I recall correctly, intendo has attended to every single E3 since they began. Later years with a giant booth and the Treehouse live (where journalists can really experience the new games in depth). Stating they don't have E3 presence anymore is being utterly misinformed.

Now, I'm not pro-Sony or pro-Microsoft or even pro-Nintendo in that regard, but I'm pro-E3: its sole mention already lightens our old-school gamers hearts (hence the "Christmas for gamers"). For one big player to not attend is just wrong and a bad PR decision.

I don't know but for me Is a bad move... they can show hardware in feb. and next gen games at the e3 and Gamescom, they miss an opportunity to have a coverage through the whole year
as you say you watch e3 news and or live streams, dosen't matter if blogs talks about Sony without e3 becouse Is the same about Microsoft...or you think that blogs and youtubers don't share and take coverage if Microsoft decide to exit the e3 and make their own shows?

Wonder if they'll push VR harder, that would be the main reason for doing "hundreds of consumer shows" instead of doing one big trade show.

Nintendo used a similar tactic with the Wii and it worked out really well. Let the people put their eyes/hands on the hardware and decide for themselves.

I was referring to Nintendo’s keynote address.. you know the thing people are mad Sony is not doing either anymore?
Journalists getting there hands on games will happen with or with out E3.

right now as it stands E3 is the smallest consumer show about games, when looking at attendance, by a huge margin.. you can say that’s because it’s only meant as a press event, but how vital is the gaming press anymore, for bringing new information about products coming out?

what I think Sony is going to do is have there reveal in February and then a conference one or two months before launch.. keep the hype up closer to launch instead of half a year before and spreading them selves thin with the announcements.

So they are already out of Money? 😂
They'd just rather spend that money on their own event. Why do they need to pay a middle man extra for the privilege when they are plenty capable of making their own show that focuses solely on them? That's what days of play is. And now they do directs like Nintendo. They don't need E3, E3 needs them and they obviously don't bring enough to the table to justify the extra money they'll spend to be there.

Okay maybe I should have double checked before I posted lol but anyway, if the PS4 was at 60 million at june 2017 and they are at 106 right now, then they sold 46 million during that period. And the Switch is at pretty much 50 million right now, so... I don't know, maybe the PS4 outsold that difference from march to june 2017. Any way you look at it, it's pretty close. Maybe the poor job they did at every single conference for the past few years can't just be brushed aside as irrelevant.

Keep in mind, what I'm suggesting is moot if they have a legit conference planned with several game announcements.
2019 had a lot to do with the Switch numbers right now tbh. Hardware shortages kept the Switch from selling exceedingly well until September, and 2018 was the Switch's weakest year so far.

So your complaint is that Sony don't have a thing that Microsoft also don't have, but might have later..?
Very likely to have is much better than not even have one studio in Sony that can do that. Also even if for some reason it’s not open ended rpgs they already have flight and AOE4 as line up which makes me more excited than anything Sony will be having like last of us or ghost of Tsushima. No reason to expect obsidian and inexile won’t continue their open ended and open world rpg/crpgs either. That’s what make them successful, It’s like expecting all Sony suddenly stop ps5. Though it would be great which means I can finally play their games on pc with much needed mods to improve their playabilities and all the very obvious flaws.

I have no clue but it its not hundreds of thousands, it has to be millions that's for sure.

edit: but the cost of a tradeshow is a piss in the ocean in their total PR-budget.

They can't push VR too hard because it's still a crazy niche market. They've sold five million units but that's less than 5% of the user base so the attach rate is poor.

Well if Sony is opting to do "hundreds of consumer events", it seems like their rationale would be to have as many people try the equipment hands-on. If that included trying PS5's new VR2.0 headset and new controller, folks might be sold on that alone. Remember, Sony believes VR is a possible futur entertainment platform, not just for gaming but for consuming movies and music and social-media. They have every reason to keep pushing VR. Whether that'll pay off is a different conversation. Like you said, the adoption rate is only a few % of the total installed base. But for an expensive add-on peripheral? It hasn't sold too poorly and there's a robust VR library to back that up. I won't mind buying one (again) once I have a PS4 Pro or a PS5. Sony did a good job with it and they should be showing it off.

Typical Japanese corporate policy. Ryan would have kept steam-rolling Microsoft into oblivion, but now that the Japanese put one of them at the wheel they just assume people will buy anything with PlayStation written on it.
Mind you, I'm happy that Microsoft will gain back some ground, but I'm afraid of what shit they are going to pull with ps5.

Japanese arrogance. Once the companies hit a good threshold of success, they seem happy to just coast on brand name.

Remember when Japanese electronics and cars started taking over around the world?

Korean electronics are bigger sellers and higher quality than Japanese gear, and it seems shitloads of European cars from Audi, Mercedes, BMW started selling great. If this was the 90s, you'd see hardly any Korean gear and European cars in USA and Canada.

Thx for the info. Damn that’s a good chunk of change though. I had no idea it was that much.
