Sony has just announced the Move.Me server, which will allow anyone to experiment with the technology using a traditional PC connected to a PS3. What are the actual possibilities offered by this project and what are your personal expectations?
Anton Mikhailov: Back during Move prototyping days we sent PS3 data to PC to try it in various existing applications. That let us see if it was good enough for the things we wanted to use it for. We felt that it was a very flexible way to work since the Move was basically abstracted as far as the PC was concerned. There are commercial trackers similar to the Move that you can buy for PC if youd like to do research in virtual reality, for example. We thought that since Move+PS3 is much cheaper that it would be a great alternative for someone working in academia.
It might seem odd to require the PS3 to be in the loop but actually it has some advantages. For one, you dont pay any resources on your host PC to track the Move. While the PS3 can do this quickly, many home PCs and laptops dont have enough processing power to do this at 60 frames per second much alone run an application along side of it. Second, we transfer the data over a standard network protocol, so any network device can make use of it. We generally refer to PCs because thats what people are familiar with but there are much more devices that support basic networking. Devices like phones, research workstations, or just Macs or PCs with uncommon operating systems all can talk through networks so it works out great. So if we focused strictly on PC, wed lose this flexibility since writing software for all those platforms would be hugely time consuming
maybe not even possible because of their processing power.
In terms of the data you get its identical to what a PS3 developer would use to make a full Move game. I always thought this was essential so a hobbyist could experiment with a game mechanics the same way our developers can. So if youre trying to get into the game industry its perfect to create a prototype which you can show to publishers and say Hey, I have this game idea for Move!. If youre interested in doing virtual reality or augmented reality games its a great platform to experiment.
