Please help me decide which next gen console to go for...

What exactly does an Xbox One do better than the PS4 when it comes to multimedia/streaming?

First consider where your friends are and what exclusives you want.

If that's still a wash I would recommend the Xbox One (and I never thought I'd say this). MS has been extremely responsive to gamers and consumers in general since the management shake up and it's a great system. The UI is years ahead of the PS4's IMO and much more polished. It also has much more media and app options beyond just gaming.

Well the UI certainly has more ads on the Xbone.

Found this and it's quite recent so may help you decide:

oh, I just thought of something else that could be pertinent.

We frequently - pretty much daily - stream content from my macbook through the 360 to watch on our HDTV. I presume this can be done easily with both the PS4 and XBox One...?

Both consoles support DLNA streaming, so assuming that is what you were using before, it should work fine.

Bloodborne is coming to the PS4, so that is the only real answer imo. Even though Sonys exclusives in general feel like style over substance for me, this one game looks so great and comes from such an awesome team, that it tips the battle in Sonys favour. So yeah, get a PS4.

I own both a 360 and PS3, but found that I preferred the 360 quite a bit over the PS3 (never liked the interface, everything always felt laggy etc). Most of my friends (real life) moved from 360 to xbox one, but I own both an xbox one and PS4.

So far I've found that both are still very buggy compared to previous generations. The xbox one especially isn't very stable yet when it comes to party chat etc. I'd say the xbox one is a step backwards from the 360, or at least it feels like that still at the moment, but they are slowly but surely fixing things and making it better. The PS4 on the other hand is a huge improvement over the PS3, so I think overall the Xbox one and PS4 is equal at the moment in my book. I'd still give the xbox one an edge for me personally simply because of friends and the TV integration (it is nice to be able to instantly switch from live TV to gaming etc).

I'l say you'll be happy with either, but just remember both consoles still need work and features, so don't expect them to be better than the old generation in terms of features yet.

I have both and i hardly use the PS4, the controller just drives me nuts. I only bought it for the exclusives which are lacking at the moment. TLOU and UC4 will be worth it though im sure.

Online is superior on xbox IMO and halo will be A M A Z I N G....but yeah....Dead rising 3 is also an amazing game, most fun ive had this gen so far thats for sure.

DLNA support isn't ready yet, it's supposed to come in a firmware update.
Right now, PS3, 360 and Xbox One are all better much better media centers.
For streaming there is a workaround for NAS and Media Plex media streamer via browser.

"More powerful" is pretty subjective at this point.

Hate to be that guy, but why not explore the possibility of PC gaming? Most of the games you're interested in are coming to PC as well. Sure, a good gaming PC takes a larger initial investment, but with the money you can save on games, you could easily have enough to buy a PS4/X1 by the time they really have their big exclusives ready to go.

If your specifically-named favorites from last gen are Dead Rising games, you should get the system that has the sequel. As well, you can take advantage of pretty incredible deals posted about on this forum to get Destiny 'free' with a new X1 purchase.

Then if multimedia is something that is important to you DLNA media serving is available on the XB1 now and DLNA browsing is coming soon. (i.e you can select a file on your laptop and "Play it" to the console)

I have just got an XB1 and I must say it is my preferred place to game right now, the PS4 has more powerful hardware but that doesn't translate into a much worse experience on the XB1.

Also things like voice commands and resuming games are absolutely amazing, it is a lot quieter than the PS4 and the controller is (imho) a heck of a lot better than the DS4. Again just my opinion, but as someone who has owned a PS4 for a couple months and an XB1 for a few days I would recommend the XB1 for destiny as a) you will probably have some friends moving over from the 360 that you can play with and b) the supporting features of the console will make it a lot more enjoyable place to play.

Have a wonder into a store, grab both controllers look at things like snapping apps, remote play, system resume and do the same with both consoles, get a feel for them and use them as that is the only way that I could answer that question, if I only had one platform then I wouldn't be able to fairly compare and contrast them the graphical difference is so minimal I really don't see it as the major factor in making the decision, later on in the gen maybe but for now not that big a deal.

As most people are saying think about what your friends play on first, exclusives, then I would look at which controller and UI you prefer, and then if you care about having your multiplats look as shiny as possible.

If you do plan on getting both eventually, I would recommend getting an Xbox One and then a PS4 down the road because the Xbox has more good looking exclusives coming soon and there are good deals on the system. All of the games I am excited for on PS4 are coming next year or later and maybe there will be better deals then. This is purely subjective though, you might be more drawn in by games that are out like TLOU, etc.

Flip a coin. Get one, and when you get bored and run out of stuff to play on one, get the other. If that's not an option, and you're only able to get one console for a very long time, just keep waiting for a big deciding factor.

My *current* list of exclusive interests is:

PS4
Don't Starve + Reign of Giants DLC
Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
No Man's Sky
Wild
Starbound
Salt and Sanctuary
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

XBox One
Dead Rising 3 + all the DLC
Below
Gunscape
Crackdown
Fable Legends (possibly)

XBox One / 360 crossgens
Forza 2 (possibly)
Rise of the Tomb Raider (TR2)
Scream Ride

Everything else is multiplatform, but openworld. If DR3 were a crossgen title, the dilema would be much less...

Well, you could get some of those Xbox Exclusives on PC (Dead Rising, Below), same for the PS4 indie titles.

Go with your friends, or try to assess which console gives you the most value, then go from there.

I think the free game deal going on right now gives the One the advantage. Get the Madden bundle plus Destiny, sell Madden, buy DR3. Get the console plus 2 games you want for $400.

Also extra $50 credit if you buy it from the Microsoft Store, which will almost cover Xbox Live for a year.

If you want to break it down to playtime, it seems most of those you want on PS4 are shorter length games (also a cheaper PC would be able to run Don't Starve and binding of isaac) while your xbox one are longer titles.

Ps4 + PC that is the perfect combo

I didn't imagine myself saying this 2 years ago, but Wii U + PC is a better fit for me. PS4 first year hasn't really been offering too much that I couldn't find on PC, meanwhile Wii U has been throwing out a lot of heavy hitters. Bloodborne will turn the tide slightly and Destinty probably does for a lot of people.

Damnit! I've flipped between the two three times in the past hour, and now I'm *still* undecided (but was leaning slightly towards the PS4 (and hoping DR3 might just be a timed exclusive after all, it would be found in November... until the comments about the controller were posted)

You know you want to buy an xbox. The PS4 is the popular choice so you wouldn't feel the need to post a thread questioning your decision if that was the one you really wanted.

Don't base it on simply what your friends have. They could be crazy and /or have made a bad call and you'd be getting sucked into one not suited to you as a result.

What exactly does an Xbox One do better than the PS4 when it comes to multimedia/streaming?

Well, it actually has a media player, for a start.

oh, I just thought of something else that could be pertinent.

Neither has full streaming support atm. MS just added USB media support to X1, with streaming apparently up soon. You can currently throw media to X1 using PlayTo, but it's not as convenient as being able to browse a share (like on 360/PS3) is.

PS4? Forget it for now. It'll happen, but there's not really any indication of when.

Both consoles support DLNA streaming, so assuming that is what you were using before, it should work fine.

I'm gonna assume you own neither console. Correct?

DR3 is published and partially funded by MS...it's not happening on PS4. I guess I see your dilemma, but if you're focusing on what you'll play in the next few months, at least, your topic post seems clearly best suited to X1, IMO. Good luck, man, and I hope you don't end up making yourself disappointed with buyer's remorse with your conflicted desires.

You know that, based on your list, the best choice would be a gaming PC? Not even a very powerful one, actually...

I'm just gonna say it. Fuck the whole 'following your friends down the rabbit hole' and buying the lesser system because their happy asses weren't savvy enough to make an informed purchase. I understand wanting to play with your friends, but Christ - that seems like one hell of a sacrifice to make. I know the XB1 isn't pure shit, I'm not saying it is, but this isn't like going out and buying a game, this is a long term investment. I'm sorry, but if those were my friends, they could just suck it.

As others have said, I'd say the two most important factors are exclusive games and friends.

If you play a lot of MP games with your friends, then gaming on the same platform is something you should consider. If you just like playing MP games, but not necessarily with your friends (maybe that don't game?), then look to what has the better MP services/infrastructure.

I'd say the games themselves are the most important factor, so that should be the biggest draw, compare the exclusive games (past and future) of the two platforms and see what's got you most excited.

None of my close friends really game, so it wasn't a factor for me. When deciding, these where the most important factors (to me):

1. Exclusive Games
2. Online infrastructure
3. Console ecosystem
4. Experience with console manufactures previous console
5. System power
6. Storage solutions (beyond the stock HDDs)
7. Controller

I got an XB1 based on that; even though there are definitely some things PS4 is superior at, there were more things that drew me to XB1. And I've been extremely pleased with my choice, now, and looking to the future.

Well the UI certainly has more ads on the Xbone.

Mine has no external ads at all - I don't really consider links to things I can buy from the MS store ads, you get that on all systems, I don't recall it on the PS4 yet but the PS3 had the What's New which was the same thing.

The XBO certainly doesn't (at least yet) have the ads like the Xbox 360 did so I felt a clarification was in order - those I would consider extremely annoying.

DR3 won't be coming to the PS4 I think.

I have both consoles but think the DS4 is a bit better than the X1 controller. I play mostly on the 4 for the multiplatforms and exclusives and just MS exclusives for the X1. Also think PS+ gives better offerings so far than GWG does.

Another thread about which console to buy.

You should just buy the system that has the games on it you want to play and/or the friends playing on it that you would want to play with. All this other stuff, individual title lists, shit like that, largely irrelevant. 90% of the games coming out will come out for both systems, and whatever you buy, down the line, neither console maker is going to run out of systems, so you're still going to be able to buy the other one if a collection of exclusives builds up that's big enough to warrant you picking up the system.

I own both actually, you can do streaming initiated by the server. The consoles don't support browsing a DLNA server, but you can trigger playback using a remote server or via various mobile apps etc.

Xbox one DLNA browser support is coming soon though in the next patch.

I assumed the PS4 had the same functionality, but looks like I was incorrect. You can use PLEX streaming via the browser on the PS4, but otherwise media streaming to the PS4 seems limited? I haven't really played with this functionality on my PS4, I'm waiting for a native client for PLEX on either the xbox one or PS4.

For me if you are interested in certain exclusives follow that console.
Main reason for getting a PS4 for me (besides Bloodborne and UC4) is that they have those First Party Studios, and some of them have still not announced what they are doing.

I usually say to where your friends are but, since you seem more interested in indies, you probably be able to play them first on PS4 (ost indies will end up in both platforms eventually).
If you decide for a X1 and live in the US, remember you can get the Madden bundle (or other bundle) plus Destiny at $400.

ok cool. I took "if you were doing that before" to mean DLNA browsing like the 360 and PS3 had no issues with. The current consoles are both sad offerings comparatively.

Why, because you disagree? Fuck off.

Or because you're implying that people only buy an Xbox One because they're uninformed?

I opted for an Xbox One before a PS4... and I was plenty informed at the time (if anything my PS4 was the uninformed purchase as it's spent nearly 8 months collecting dust). Hell, I bought a Saturn whilst being more informed than most PS1 buyers were at the time.

Ok. So for those who have played the console version of Don't Starve... how many hours of enjoyment have you gotten out of it?

I'm under the impression the PS4 version is more or less identical to the PC one, and I can tell you I've sunk at least a hundred hours into that and don't recall not enjoying any of my time on it. It's one of my favourite games of recent times. Should be well worth considering if the PC version isn't an option for you.

"More powerful" is pretty subjective at this point. Sure the PS4 is more powerful hardware-wise but is that easily seen? I've yet to see the advantage.

Heh, cheers for all the deal info, but I'm in the UK.

Tonight at Game, for £350 I can either get a white PS4 with Destiny, or a black XBox One with Destiny and Halo: Master Chief Collection.
