Portal 2 PS3 Steam Features Revealed (Platform agnosticism)

Yup. On the PC there is a direct benefit: security, people like it, and Valve handles the server load. With Sony, that isn't going to happen.
No cert process for patches, and perhaps VAC enabled servers for multi-player could be enticing for other publishers.

Actually, iirc some of those features (I think it was something about security) were going to be implemented as well

holy shit.

holy shit.

so this basically means I have to buy the PS3 version for max value? fine with me.

Well other publishers would have to have their shit certified through Valve instead, though they may be quicker so there is that.

So just how expensive/speedy is the Steam cert process for PC?

The gaiety derived from your post exceeded my self-control tolerances, good sir! You are to be applauded for your efforts!

Somebody posted an image in a thread (may have been in OT side, but I can't be sure) the other day of this phrase attached to a cat wearing a monocle. Wish I saved it. :(

I remember one Super Meat Boy update that took about 40 minutes to cert. I guess most would take about a day.

Steamworks could be another platform for delivering PS3 games? Platform in a platform...

Bring out the Xzibit meme.
nah, its not STEAM on the ps3, if thats what your thinking.
Steamworks implementation for portal 2 on the ps3 is a sort of wrapper, that allows valve to update their game whenever they see fit. You can see it as a direct access line to their software without them having to go trough loopholes to get a patch out. They want to provide their customers with a service and the steamworks integration allows them to do that on the ps3.

maybe other games could get steamworks integration for consoles. But I think for the time being it will only happen with valve products.

Am I getting this right? If I buy Portal 2 on PS3 I will be able to download it in Steam on my PC as well just by linking my account? I was just planning to buy it for PC, but paying $10 more to get a copy on both systems is a great deal.

And, as other have pointed out, if you pre-order it from Amazon then it's only $5 more and you get $20 amazon credit. So yeah, go buy it.

Now this has me thinking. If they're willing to put Steam on PS3, what's stopping them from porting to the NGP/PSP2 in the future? Handheld TF2 (!?TF3?!) *drools*
It's almost enough to make me want an NGP, ALMOST...

In what way?
Stuff like this: http://www.shacknews.com/article/65528/valves-newell-calls-xbox-360

They really wanted to do free, quick updates for TF2 on Xbox like on PC. They figured MS would let them eventually, but never did (neither free nor quick).

They played along with MS in L4D. They released paid DLC for Live but free for PC. Although, possibly as a burn, when they released the Live DLC for $7, they dropped the PC price of the full game to under $7.

Finally: http://www.hotbloodedgaming.com/201...t-is-holding-back-steamworks-on-the-xbox-360/

This is speculation, but it seems like this PS3 love (like Gabe saying at E3 that the PS3 version would be the best) is because of Xbox frustrations.

One thing I never got for the Left 4 Dead DLC is why it was always so expensive. I mean if valve wanted it free why not just charge like 400 points or maybe even less.

It was always 7 bucks

Microsoft. Just like UT3 Titan pack was free on PC and PS3, but it was 7 bucks (IIRC) on 360.

If TF2 never came out for PS3, then I doubt NGP gets it.

Cant wait for this! A little ot but does the ps3 version of portal hold up well? I wanna play the first b4 I play the second.

It's been demoed a bunch of times. It's fine.

Some of our readers expressed nervousness about linking their games with their Steam accounts. Will they still be able to resell their games? Lombardi declined to offer specifics when asked about what protections were built in, saying only that we'll have more details on account linking closer to launch.
Heh.

There's gotta be something to stop people from copping the PS3 version, putting the Steam copy on their accounts, getting their trophies or whatever, and then putting the PS3 version back into the wild.

I'm to sure if Valve announced a solution for any slime trying to buy the PS3 version just so they can resell it after they activate their copy on steam. Personally I see them making it so when it's resold the new owner can activate their copy on steam completely removing the previous owner's rights. Perhaps if it's within the first two weeks a nice little "go to hell" achievement can pop up on the previous owner's steam account.

Oops, you're right. I misread his post.

Loading times aside, EA's port of Portal is fine.

Nope. That is tantamount to game trading which Valve has never allowed with any game on their service and I don't see them starting with this. The reason is it cuts Valve out COMPLETELY. If someone buys the PS3/PC version, plays it, beats it, sells it to someone else than Valve doesn't get one penny and they have yet to show any willingness with that set up.

I've never bought/preordered a game on Amazon when it comes to a games launch. How long after launch day could I expect to receive the game? That amazon deal is awesome, but not being able to play the game at midnight is going to suck :/

I'm suspicious that the PS3 versions multiplayer is fully tied to a steam code like the PC version that comes with it. So if someone sold their PS3 copy, only the single player portion would ever function.

I don't think I like that idea. In a way, that would make the 360 version more consumer friendly.
