Portal 2 PS3 Steam Features Revealed (Platform agnosticism)

Psi said:
I'm suspicious that the PS3 versions multiplayer is fully tied to a steam code like the PC version that comes with it. So if someone sold their PS3 copy, only the single player portion would ever function.

I don't think I like that idea. In a way, that would make the 360 version more consumer friendly.

Except you don't have to link your PS3 to PC...

No but doesn't the PS3's multiplayer still function through Steam regardless? That's how the cross platform play functions yes? I wish they weren't so vague on these details. Or maybe there's a clarification I missed.

Sony should offer to get move controls in the game for them for free. It's would be perfect for this game. The orange and blue light alone would make it worth it. Heck a Portal edition move, or a insanely expensive portal gun encasement for the move and navigator (although the KZ3 gun should work perfectly for it, it'll be just for a collectable).

I'm convinced Valve are working on Move support. It'd be piss-easy to implement considering Hydra is essentially the same.

Unless Valve has cooked up a unique solution to the PC + PS3 problem, I'm betting a Steamworks code in the box of every new copy of PS3 Portal 2. I don't think they have the desire (or authority) to tie a PSN/PS3 account to a specific copy of a game.

Why do that when ps3 supports kb/m controls?

They were pretty clear that they weren't. Hydra support is not even being implemented by Valve.

Holy fuck, Valve am gods.

While iOS devs have the capability to make hybrid iPhone/iPad apps and decide to make separate version anyways to fuck us over and make us double dip, Valve OTOH is being awesome.

This is a triumph. I'm making a note here; huge success.

Firstly, they only made it clear that Portal 2 won't ship with Move support. Secondly, the maps that make specific use of the Hydra controller scheme aren't being done in-house; it's still completely supported by Valve otherwise.

So, if I pre-order on Steam, will I get the armor for the bots that Gamestop is advertising?

Usually for Valve games, when you get it on Steam, you get all the pre-order bonuses (at least for L4D2). I'm just double checking.

Your points are contradictory anyway, if it was piss-easy to suppport then why wouldn't it be available at launch?

Not that i care anyway, i don't even have a Move.

In this instance they're not, as we're talking about Valve. Porting the Orange Box engine updates to earlier Source games would've been (relatively) piss-easy given the modular nature of the engine, however Valve sure did take their time doing so!

It doesn't need to because it's not HID locked. Not like 360.

My post was just to show the inherent incentive for Sony to help Valve implement Move support on Portal 2. It's in their interest.

I've never bought/preordered a game on Amazon when it comes to a games launch. How long after launch day could I expect to receive the game? That amazon deal is awesome, but not being able to play the game at midnight is going to suck :/

For the new page. Probably gonna go with Amazon, but just curious as to what to expect.

Oh, wow. I chose "release date shipping" to see how expensive it would be. And it is actually cheaper than the normal shipping? ($0.99) Wat?? Is there some kind of catch here?

Please list me the number of PS3 games that actually support kb/m that isn't called Unreal Tournament 3. PS2 BC PS3's that used kb/m notwithstanding.

Please try, because I'd sure like to see that list as some sort of fucking precedent. Its offensive how these PC-lead multiplatform games don't take advantage of the PS3's kb/m support functionality.

I can't wait for the thread when it's confirmed that all online functionality/DLC for the game requires you to login to the Steam account that you tied the PS3 Steam code to, essentially killing half the resale value for the game and preventing abuse of the system.

Don't people already know it's going to be like that? I mean, come on. Vale is good but they're not Santa.

No, I'm pretty sure some people think it won't be that way. The other kicker is that it will be the same code to unlock the PC version meaning they will automatically be locked to the same Steam account.

As expected of course.

People need to stop thinking that they are entitled to everything when they are not. If Valve decides to not even tie one account to the other, that would be up to Valve to decide, and would be because they want to and not because people are entitled to.

The sense of entitlement of people keeps growing at a mind blowing rate, its disgusting.

Well, duh! Valve is great, but not crazy. If it wasn't like that that's essentially half the sales they loose.

You're right. And even some of those that already know it will add to the whining choir just to see if Valve breaks and throws them a freebie.

So what if only one game did it so far?

Valve has the option to put kb/m controls in the ps3 version since Sony allows it, and I assume Valve is a big fan of kb/m controls. Nobody is stopping them from implementing it. They have no excuse not to, especially with cross-platform play.

Surely there are those who will be buying the PS3 version who don't have a computer to play the Steam version on. For them I would think the lack of the PC code wouldn't make a difference.

I thought I saw a thread a while ago confirming move support? Guess it was just a rumor :(

It was a translation mistake (from German to English) because obviously no one on the Internet speaks German.

The original article meant to confirm there will be NO Move support.

It was... sort of. Valve's Chet Faiszek said that the team was excited by the Move support on Portal 2 to the Germany official playstation blog. Latter on that was debunked and Valve said that they were excited by the possibilities that the Move controller could give them but that they didn't have nothing to announce on Portal 2. I'm paraphrasing here...

I was a bit hazy on this too, thanks!

Though DC Universe is not resell-able. That ties the disc down. SOE are somewhat a separate entity to SCEA and could do it. During the Valve-Sony negotiations, this could have been discussed.

Its certainly possible. If Portal 2 is as good as Portal, I'm not going to be trading it in anyway.

So ... when I get my PS3 version, and log in via my steam account, it unlocks the PC version on my PC? Or is there a code in the box?

Nope, as said Amazon is that awesome. I only buy games on Amazon because of their gift card deals and tax free (and free release day delivery using Amazon Prime)
