Portal 2 PS3 Steam Features Revealed (Platform agnosticism)

Left 4 Dead got a quick (and good) sequel.

It wouldn't be entirely improbable to see Portal 3 a little over a year from Portal 2's release. No 360 version seems a bit suspect, though.

Yeah, the lack of a 360 version sounds insane, they should have went with something more believable. More likely would be a scenario where the first dlc expansion hits pc, mac and ps3 simultaneously while the 360 goes through certification. So 1 month timed "console excluse dlc" seems plausible.

oh, I don't think I posted in this thread... but Portal 2 PS3 pre-order get!

The PS3 offer on Amazon is borderline ridiculous..... "here, take this great game, we'll give you both the PS3, PC and Mac versions, let all three of them play together, oh... and it only costs $35 to boot"

The only downside I see is that from the sounds, you can't buy the PS3 version solely for the PC version, as I'm guessing linking a PSN account and Steam account has to happen from within the game.. If you could though.. many, there would hardly be any reason to not by the PS3 version unless you solely were planning to play it on 360.

He does still hate PS3. It turns out that he hates Xbox Live more so than he does PS3. So much so that he is willing to put Steamworks on PS3 and code games for it just to prove a point to Microsoft.
I wouldn't put it like it's some kind of school ground dispute. It's a good business deal. It would be on 360 if MSFT allowed it.

That rumor is bollocks, firstly there's no way Portal 3 would be announced at E3, it's way too early, and Valve aren't dropping platforms, they're expanding to others, it'd be against everything they've done in recent years.

You're absolutely right. If Microsoft relented on their position Steamworks would be on 360 literally as soon as they could do so. Valve has built up a following on 360 as well and it'd be stupid to not include them if they could. However, until Microsoft does so, the PS3 is going to get a lot of love from Valve and Valve is likely hoping that the 360 owners complain enough about it to force Microsoft's hand.

If i buy this on ps3 will it bind to my steamworks account???and then i can play in the pc right???so its a win win situation to buy the ps3 version...

That is the idea, yes. We don't know exactly how it does that yet but we do know that's included.

I wish they would come out and clarify how this is going to work, preferably before the damn game comes out so I can switch my preorder to PC if you have to link accounts in the ps3 game.

I seriously doubt Valve would make Portal 3 PS3 exclusive, i bet more people will buy Portal 2 on 360 than PS3. Acutally i take that back because of this deal they are doing.

I thought Gabe hated the PS3 anyway??

He appeared at Sony's E3 conference and apologized lol, announced Portal 2 and the Steam stuff also.

As for the rumor: grain of salt until proven/disproven

From the OP:

"We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."

Depends on if Valve is more interested in promoting Steam or individual games. As it stands now, the 360 versions of Valve games let people play them without touching Steam (afaik). Why help promote the 360 at the expense of Steam if they don't have to? I'm sure the money is nice, but I'd be surprised if Valve was hurting for cash.

I'm not saying this particular rumor is likely, but I wouldn't be surprised if Valve dropped 360 support for at least one game. Sony is letting Valve make, distribute, and support their games how they want to on the console. MS isn't.

What does surprise me is other publishers apparently not flipping their lid publicly at Valve getting to bypass certification for patches. :)

I think the question is if you have to or not. And I doubt you have to; I'm sure you could drop the blu-ray in and play without having an internet connection at all, you'd just be missing the Steam friendlist. I think I get why people are worried about it, I'd hate to get kicked off Steam because someone's using the PS3, or vice versa. Hopefully there will be a separate "Connect to Steam" button in the game or something like that, so you don't have to every time you start it up.

I'm not buying the game until either Valve explains how it will work or we get first hand accounts about how it works. I'm very disappointed Valve hasn't detailed how the PS3 Steamworks functions yet.

Guess that means I'll be paying more and getting the PC version. Kind of sucks but oh well.

It sounds like its inside the game. You boot up Portal 2 and can input your Steam details. That will give you a free PC/Mac copy of the game.

As for the Steamworks integration, that is done via an in game menu by the sounds of it as you'll be able to see lists of your Steam friends and will be able to choose to play cross platform play via that menu.

In around 7 hours and 20 minutes we'll start seeing the first UK April Fools articles.

I reckon there'll be a lot of Valve ones.

Along with some real ones, just so you can't tell the difference. It would be hilarious to see Valve troll themselves by putting real info on a website that says it's a joke.

Valve are certainly pro-money, pro-self promotion, pro-Steam growth, but fundamentally they're pro-consumer, and dropping 360 SKUs because it doesn't grow their empire as greatly as it could is firmly anti-consumer. I don't see how a potential Portal 3 would be in a different situation to Portal 2, they could have dropped 360 this time but they didn't, I can't see that ever changing, they're investing in developing a Valve fan base amongst the 360 users, they're not going to abandon them.

Epic and Valve are probably being consulted heavily by Sony and Microsoft in terms of next-gen consoles. Once everyone starts from scratch again (userbase wise), Valve has a lot of leverage in terms of who to support going forward. Sony will probably deepen their relationship with Valve. I wonder how much "control" Microsoft is willing to give up in order to bring Gabe on?

I just hope the VAC ban my son earned me on Counter-Strike: Source doesn't follow me over to Portal 2 or my PSN/Steam hybrid experience.

If we're going to be linking accounts and shit, it's time to un-perma that shit and give an innocent father some possible future redemption.

The question noone has answered though is do you have to be signed into the PS3 Steamworks in order to play PS3 Portal 2 SP?

Also, I'd like to know if Valve plans on adding any incentives to preordering the PC version of Portal 2. Even if it's something as simple as a hat in TF2, I'd like to know if I'm going to miss out on anything exclusive by getting the PS3 version instead of the PC version. They've made the game 10% off, but that's an incredibly weak incentive for their "home" platform and is kind of out of character for Valve to not offer anything else.

Does Valve use VAC for Co-Op games? If Portal 2 had MP I think you'd be in trouble, but I don't think VAC is enabled for Co-Op.

I believe Blizzard was also consulted on the next Microsoft console. So both parties are definitely interested in doing something about the current situation.

For this generation, I think Microsoft will stick to their guns, unless a dramatic shift in sales start to happen.

How is it more anti-consumer than not making PS3 versions of L4D after the poor experience with the Orange Box on the platform (even if it was handled by EA)? Does Valve really want a large 360 fanbase, or did they simply want a large console fanbase, and didn't want to bother with the PS3 before now?

Valve is still referring to Portal 2 on the PS3 as an experiment (heh), so they're clearly hedging their bets if it doesn't go well. Like I said before, I'm not convinced this particular rumor is true, but if Portal 2 on the PS3 goes reasonably smoothly for Valve and Sony, I wouldn't be surprised if Valve's efforts on the 360 slow down a lot.

I still don't think it's true, but if Microsoft's going to attempt to use the Xbox 360 as a bludgeon against Steam via integration GFWL (however hamfistedly), it makes some amount of sense for Valve to work more closely with a rival console. I don't know if that strategic consideration outweighs the extra cash and the extra customers, though.

Valve said EA could have ported L4D, but they didn't have a team in-house to handle a PS3 port. On GAF there seems to be the impression Valve have done a 180 in terms of console support but they haven't at all, Gabe never went back on any of his criticisms of PS3, and Valve never said they wouldn't support PS3, they always said it was a question of in-house bandwidth. Exactly the same thing with Mac support before that came and iPhone support which no doubt is coming down the line too.

I should say, there are always things that Sony will allow that could make exclusives viable, DotA2 could come to PSN and require keyboard/mouse for example, but in terms of gamepad games, I'd be shocked, it'd be very out of character I think.

Who here actually plans on keeping the PS3 version? No access to PC for whatever reason, play PS3 version, play split screen on PS3 version. Access to PC = Play superior version. Winning on both platforms!

Ugh... That story that was posted about the Portal 3 stuff was a very, very poorly timed April Fools joke. There is no truth to it, and it was posted without my approval. The writer has been let go. Please continue your discussion of cross-platform luv.

If he was using your account and did something ban-worthy, then that account deserves to be banned.

I just read your edit, very honourable position to take, very cool.

Too bad for the guy though.

I'm trying to think of a console release that is less likely to happen than this and I'm not coming up with anything.
Quite, I was not at all suggesting it might happen, just that in theory a keyboard/mouse required game would be allowed on PS3 but not on 360 so it's vaguely possible they could warrant a console exclusive on those grounds, but I still don't think it would ever happen.

Doh!

Yeah, regarding 'MAY'

...umm...bit of over-analysis there.

"May" meaning "you're allowed to" or "you're given permission to" not "we might let you or we might not"

Well, it would have been a good April Fools "gotcha" kind of thing had it gone up tomorrow when there'd be a bunch of other stories of equal or at least equally questionable validity. To be honest, though, it's not really the kind of stuff that we like to do on the site (we'd rather poke fun at ourselves or really go all out and make it obvious it was fake). Decent idea, bad execution, and very much counter to how I try to run the site.

Thanks for the kind words. I didn't want to just pull the story; it's out there, and I think the more important thing to do is to set the record straight, suck it up and take responsibility.

Marc did a lot of really, really good stuff for us, so it was not a decision I took lightly. Definitely a bad day...

L4D2 came so quickly because L4D was a success on 360, but Microsoft wasn't willing to let Valve update it the way they wanted. So they released L4D2, which allowed for more finetuning without going through Microsoft in things like, say, mutations.

Oh god. Just saw this thread for the first time.

I was originally gonna get it for 360 because I like the controller over the PS3 controller... But I think this does it, I'm getting the PS3 version.
