It wouldn't be entirely improbable to see Portal 3 a little over a year from Portal 2's release. No 360 version seems a bit suspect, though.
I wouldn't put it like it's some kind of school ground dispute. It's a good business deal. It would be on 360 if MSFT allowed it.Crisis said:He does still hate PS3. It turns out that he hates Xbox Live more so than he does PS3. So much so that he is willing to put Steamworks on PS3 and code games for it just to prove a point to Microsoft.

The PS3 offer on Amazon is borderline ridiculous..... "here, take this great game, we'll give you both the PS3, PC and Mac versions, let all three of them play together, oh... and it only costs $35 to boot"
The only downside I see is that from the sounds, you can't buy the PS3 version solely for the PC version, as I'm guessing linking a PSN account and Steam account has to happen from within the game.. If you could though.. many, there would hardly be any reason to not by the PS3 version unless you solely were planning to play it on 360.
Smeghead said:I seriously doubt Valve would make Portal 3 PS3 exclusive, i bet more people will buy Portal 2 on 360 than PS3. Acutally i take that back because of this deal they are doing.
I thought Gabe hated the PS3 anyway??

Anyone know what these other reliable rumours were?
Ickman3400 said:I wish they would come out and clarify how this is going to work, preferably before the damn game comes out so I can switch my preorder to PC if you have to link accounts in the ps3 game.
StuBurns said:That rumor is bollocks, firstly there's no way Portal 3 would be announced at E3, it's way too early, and Valve aren't dropping platforms, they're expanding to others, it'd be against everything they've done in recent years.
I think the question is if you have to or not. And I doubt you have to; I'm sure you could drop the blu-ray in and play without having an internet connection at all, you'd just be missing the Steam friendlist. I think I get why people are worried about it, I'd hate to get kicked off Steam because someone's using the PS3, or vice versa. Hopefully there will be a separate "Connect to Steam" button in the game or something like that, so you don't have to every time you start it up.From the OP:
"We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."
I'm not buying the game until either Valve explains how it will work or we get first hand accounts about how it works. I'm very disappointed Valve hasn't detailed how the PS3 Steamworks functions yet.KittyKittyBangBang said:I am anxious to see how this gets implemented

I reckon there'll be a lot of Valve ones.
Valve are certainly pro-money, pro-self promotion, pro-Steam growth, but fundamentally they're pro-consumer, and dropping 360 SKUs because it doesn't grow their empire as greatly as it could is firmly anti-consumer. I don't see how a potential Portal 3 would be in a different situation to Portal 2, they could have dropped 360 this time but they didn't, I can't see that ever changing, they're investing in developing a Valve fan base amongst the 360 users, they're not going to abandon them.androvsky said:Depends on if Valve is more interested in promoting Steam or individual games. As it stands now, the 360 versions of Valve games let people play them without touching Steam (afaik). Why help promote the 360 at the expense of Steam if they don't have to? I'm sure the money is nice, but I'd be surprised if Valve was hurting for cash.
The question noone has answered though is do you have to be signed into the PS3 Steamworks in order to play PS3 Portal 2 SP?Galvanise_ said:It sounds like its inside the game. You boot up Portal 2 and can input your Steam details. That will give you a free PC/Mac copy of the game.
As for the Steamworks integration, that is done via an in game menu by the sounds of it as you'll be able to see lists of your Steam friends and will be able to choose to play cross platform play via that menu.

Does Valve use VAC for Co-Op games? If Portal 2 had MP I think you'd be in trouble, but I don't think VAC is enabled for Co-Op.Imbarkus said:I just hope the VAC ban my son earned me on Counter-Strike: Source doesn't follow me over to Portal 2 or my PSN/Steam hybrid experience.
If we're going to be linking accounts and shit, it's time to un-perma that shit and give an innocent father some possible future redemption.
Akia said:Epic and Valve are probably being consulted heavily by Sony and Microsoft in terms of next-gen consoles. Once everyone starts from scratch again (userbase wise), Valve has a lot of leverage in terms of who to support going forward. Sony will probably deepen their relationship with Valve. I wonder how much "control" Microsoft is willing to give up in order to bring Gabe on?

Valve said EA could have ported L4D, but they didn't have a team in-house to handle a PS3 port. On GAF there seems to be the impression Valve have done a 180 in terms of console support but they haven't at all, Gabe never went back on any of his criticisms of PS3, and Valve never said they wouldn't support PS3, they always said it was a question of in-house bandwidth. Exactly the same thing with Mac support before that came and iPhone support which no doubt is coming down the line too.androvsky said:How is it more anti-consumer than not making PS3 versions of L4D after the poor experience with the Orange Box on the platform (even if it was handled by EA)? Does Valve really want a large 360 fanbase, or did they simply want a large console fanbase, and didn't want to bother with the PS3 before now?
Valve is still referring to Portal 2 on the PS3 as an experiment (heh), so they're clearly hedging their bets if it doesn't go well. Like I said before, I'm not convinced this particular rumor is true, but if Portal 2 on the PS3 goes reasonably smoothly for Valve and Sony, I wouldn't be surprised if Valve's efforts on the 360 slow down a lot.

In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.

Quite, I was not at all suggesting it might happen, just that in theory a keyboard/mouse required game would be allowed on PS3 but not on 360 so it's vaguely possible they could warrant a console exclusive on those grounds, but I still don't think it would ever happen.Beer Monkey said:I'm trying to think of a console release that is less likely to happen than this and I'm not coming up with anything.
