Portal 2 PS3 Steam Features Revealed (Platform agnosticism)

CptSupermarket said:
Ok so if i buy this for ps3, link to my steam account for free copy, then can my daughter play co op with me on pc and she on ps3 or vice versa?

Highly unlikely, but we don't know for sure yet.

I don't see why that wouldn't be possible considering they already said there will be cross-platform multiplayer between PS3 and PC. The two games would have to be linked to the same Steam account for it NOT to work but does the PS3 version HAVE to be on the same account? Can't you just create a new Steam account on the PS3 after the PC version is linked to your main account? I guess we'll find out.

It's almost guaranteed that to get your free PC copy, you will have to tie your PS3 copy to the same account. Let's be real here, Valve still wants to make money.

so what you are saying is that it will be tied to my ps3 serial code? or that particular portal 2 blu ray? so i cant sign in to ps3 as a different user and co op that way?

I think it's pretty simple. Valve is just trying to expand their "play anywhere" stance to the consoles and this time it's PS3. Free PC copy doesn't mean a bonus for the PS3 players.

If that's not in the PS3 version then I'm not buying it. I was getting the PS3 version solely so my girlfriend could play on the TV when I did co-op with her on my PC with the free Steam version.

Major letdown if that's not possible :(

This. You're only getting one copy of the game, it's just one that you can play on a number of platforms. Playing co-op requires two copies.

exact same reason I pre-ordered the PS3 version - to play co-op with my girlfriend
if PS3-PC co-op is not possible which I thought it would, I guess I'll get 2 360 copies instead

I don't think any sane person really expected that to begin with.

Is it not glaringly obvious how this would be abused to hell and back?

PS3-PC co-op is definitely possible. But you'll have to buy a second copy for your girlfriend.

Please don't complain about this, GAF. I like to think that most of you are at least a little reasonable.

It's my own fault for not reading the finer details, I admit, because when I read it came with a free Steam code I just assumed that meant I'd basically be getting a free PC version with the console one. Instantly that became appealing because of the fact I wanted to co-op it with the missus. I assumed the PS3 copy would be tied to my console and the PC version would be tied to my Steam account, thus allowing she and I to play both copies at once, but not allow it to be sold on/lent etc.

Understandable from Valve's POV, but a letdown for me. Just Steam version it is, then. :(

Edit: So I'm doing some Googling and there won't be local splitscreen for co-op on PC version? :\

Valve really should. I mean come on all the code is there and PC has more than enough horsepower for it. We shouldn't have to ghetto fixes to get it.

I'm still kinda irritated they never bothered in L4D1/2.

I think most people just assumed that the PS3 version of the game would come with a PC version serial code like the ones that would come in any PC version that you could activate on Steam as an entirely seperate product. In reality, the PS3 version will most likely come with steps to tie your PSN account to your Steam account (since you'll be able to access your Steam friends list from within the PS3 version) and a code to activate your Steam version of Portal 2 that will be tied to that same account. Just like trying to play the same game on the same account on two PCs, you'll probably not be able to play the same PS3 version with the same PC version.

As soon as it was confirmed that it was to be tied to your steam account, it was pretty obvious that only one platform could use it at a time.

I'm still intrigued to see how it will work just over psn and if others can use the game in the same household.

You might be able to enable it via a config edit a la L4D.

Edit: Somebody should just e-mail Gabe and ask him what the go is with using the PS3 copy and the bonus PC copy concurrently.

I really don't see why Valve don't have splitscreen support as standard. I mean, a large number of PC players use TVs these days. Split screen Portal would still look great on my 40" TV.

I'm still hyped as hell for the game but now I'm pretty much forced to play with somebody other than my girlfriend because I'm not buying the game twice unless it is possible to hack in splitscreen. Lame.

The fact that it can be enabled by way of a config file edit likely means they're working on it but feel the feature is not yet ready to patch in.

Boy Foliorum you had some high expectations for this, I gotta say.

You ARE getting a free PC copy with the PS3 version. You just aren't getting 2 copies. You wanna play with your wife cross-platform, buy another copy.

I think Valve's philosophy on this is, you bought Game X, you can play Game X on multiple platforms if you happen to own them. That's it. 2 players need 2 copies.

You could hack it into L4D1 and they never had any plans to enable it.

And holy shit at people feeling that they're entitled to an entirely free copy of the game. That was never the case. Not to mention on top of the Steam version, the Walmart and Amazon credit bonuses still make this one of the best deals in the last year or so. If you were really hanging on having that extra copy playable by two people, just use that credit and enjoy another $30/40 copy.

I know, I mentioned that myself on this very page.

Again, the that fact the option exists within the Source Engine likely means they're working on it to some capacity. I'm sure it'll be patched in eventually.

Not people who actually read the wording and had any clue how Steam actually worked. There was a lot of excitement (OMG! Steam coming to PS3! AWESOME! Let's speculate how this super system is going to work!) by people who seemed like they'd never loaded Steam a single time in their life. It was never a mystery how this was going to work. Valve isn't Santa Claus nor are they stupid. It's a great bonus for those with a PS3, but it was never intended to be a two-for.

EDIT: Not targeting you, FV. I can see how some people could get caught up in the FUD if they weren't paying attention. And there was a lot of speculative FUD by the Sony lot.

It's not a sense of entitlement, it's a misunderstanding. Get off your high horse, mate.

It's likely just a remnant of code from console version that people learned to access via console. People were asking Valve constantly to make it an official option in L4D1 and not only did they never do so, but IIRC you can't even activate it via console in L4D2.

I think there was supposed to be another word here, but nonetheless the above is true.

(damn you edited! Valve IS Santa Claus dammit)

zomg there are no portals in the ads, false advertising confirmed

Seriously though, seems pretty damn minimal. Just a picture of one of the co-op bots in mid-stride? Really?

The very same config trick works for L4D2, too.

Buy PS3 version -> Get PC version for free -> Sell PS3 version= Profit.

Not good for Valve, I know it. (used sales etc.) But hey, they started leaching off my pocket with Steam.

Why would the ps3 version need DRM enabled by steam?

It makes no sense.

I don't think it does. Only to activate the free PC version for obvious reasons. Surely you can play P2 on PS3 without an Internet connection.

Valve really goes all out with its ads. Hell, even in Miami I've seen the bus ad for Portal 2. They also did bus ads for left 4 dead 2 when that came out. It just makes the wait for this game even worse than it already is : /

Do people really think Valve haven't thought about that?
I would be extremely surprised if you were able to do that.

Steamworks integration is only for online aspects of the game (multiplayer, patches/content updates, etc.)

It's highly likely that once you tie your PS3 copy to your Steam account, it can't be done on another PSN account. The PS3 copy you buy, PSN account and Steam account are probably all tied together.

You can sell it if the buyer is totally cool with never playing online I guess.

I'm sure Valve thought of your clever fucking plan and has some way to make that used copy as worthless as possible.

AND THAT WILL MAKE THEM HISTORY'S GREATEST MONSTERS.

BOYCOTT VALVE FOREVER.

Yeah, they'll just allow the PS3 key that you use to activate the Steam copy be reusable. Once you sell your copy off, the next buyer will activate his/her PC copy and yours will be gone.

This way the original buyer is screwed, as it it should be.

I have my Portal 2 (PS3) preorder paid in full, can't wait.

One question though, when I link my PSN account to Steam I'll unlock the PC version. Can I then link my other PSN account to another friends Steam account and unlock it for him as well?

Edit: My reading FTL, I see others with similar thoughts. *hugs cheap people*

Don't think stores like GameStop know that it will be a worthless used copy.

I doubt it, it's going to be a one off thing. The person buying a used copy won't get shit: cloud saves, free DLC (which they should push hard), and access to Steam friends lists.

SMH. People want companies to be pro-consumer and then when companies are, you get ideas like this.

i'm hoping (though not expecting) that the free Portal 2 on PC happens with a one use code, which is ONLY for Portal 2 on PC.

that way the game can be sold and played online by someone else (without having issues with the code already being used), and it would also mean that any secondary accounts on the PS3 could play online too.

i'm not expecting that because that isn't how steam games work on PC, where there is only one account attached when you buy a game, and anyone else wanting to play that game with their own account on that PC needs to own it too.

Anyone know why Portal 2 is cheaper in the UK than normal games? It's £32 as appose to about £42 almost every where.
Cos Valve rocks like that? Thanks to that I'm getting the PS3 version cheaper as well; 40 as opposed to 60 bucks.
