Project Sonic 2017 now called Sonic Forces [Update: First Gameplay Footage]

We want a new game made by people who actually understand what made the old games special. Not the sub-par, middle-of-the-road platformer in classic clothing that Generations was.

Have I got a game for y-

Give Taxman and his team the time and budget to make a pseudo-3D Sonic side-scroller and you'll see what classic Sonic fans have really been asking for all this time. Sonic Mania is still the closest-looking thing to what we want, but is still looking like a bit too much of it is recycled old stages with tweaks for the most part.

Oh.

I was hoping for a mix of Modern & Lost World for Modern Sonic, but I can get behind Modern gameplay. I'd assume that Classic Sonic will retain his 2D style.

Still hyped, though I'm kinda torn on if I should go with the PS4 or Switch version of Sonic Forces.

So far it looks like the same gameplay we've seen for the past 11 years. I'd really wish they'd try something more akin to the way the Adventure games controlled and played. The boosting-homing attack gameplay isn't novel anymore.

Bizarre and disappointing first impression after Lost World, but let's see what else they have to show.

Looking good. I'm hyped.
Is it just me, or do the speed/boost pads look weird? May just be the low quality footage.

Same here. I just want Sonic Adventure 3.

This is what I've been waiting for...8 months to see 9 year old gameplay

Damn, I'm still excited since I love this gameplay style but this made me laugh.

I can definitely see why seeing this style can be disappointing to some people.

I'm glad Sonic Team isn't above going back from Lost World's gameplay back to the boost gameplay.

Sonic Generations is definitely the most commonly referred example of a modern Sonic game done right, and I honestly don't think the team is out of touch with reality (lmao) because they are going back to base their new 3D title on the title that arguably made Sonic work the best in 3D space.

I mean yeah I liked Lost World's gameplay, but just as much as I like the simplicity of the Genesis games for giving Sonic very easy to understand controls and having the bread and butter of the game be instead about using his simple moveset to navigate through the levels,

the same I like the boost games of having a similar tradition of giving Sonic a very easy to understand moveset (each face button has one primary action) and instead making the gameplay about mastering it to get through the levels fast, with many cues taken from older games in regards to multiple routes that reward good players by providing massive shortcuts clear times granted that they have the skill and knowledge to reach these places. It works, it feels rewarding, and I'm definitely looking forward to more of that.

I watched the video and thought "what are they getting hype about? the only new thing in this footage is that it's running on a next gen console"

I saw no challenge or novelty brought to the Sonic formula.

Yep. For all the faults the Adventure games had the Sonic gameplay was super solid, fun platforming. Those A ranks were challenging to get and very rewarding.
Yep. Give us Adventure Gameplay with Sonic only and an optional Chao garden.

Don't see how they could go wrong.

An Adventure 3 with only Sonic would be such a let down. They have to at least include the scavenger hunt and mech stages.

Hear hear.

I'll gladly buy Sonic Forces since it will be another quality Sonic Boost game alongside Generations and Colors.

But for fucks sake Sonic Team, enough is enough. Everyone is dying for a true SA3. Adventurous story, open 3D gameplay and platforming, and NO. MORE. BOOST. Sonic isn't Burnout.

> People complaining it's just rehashing old gameplay style
> People want Sonic Adventure 3

People needs to figure out Sonic Adventure sucked in hindsight, go back now and play it, the last attempt at that style was Sonic 06.

That's the one problem in Generations, S-ranks meant jack shit. My decades of Sonic playing meant nothing!

Dark,gritty, fire and explosions...

You know...

Angel Island was set ablaze by thousands of Robotnik's machines in the opening of Sonic 3!

I think it's only gritty when stuff starts to involve murder and giant biological weapons of mass destruction that jam space colonies up it's backside, but until then this looks alright.

Duh. This one is:

That is an accidentally released Prototype of an Adventure game. Buggy, incomplete, and barely functioning. Why is this always shown as evidence that the Adventure formula can't work in modern day again?

Played Adventure last week, still tons of fun.

I like those stages personally, but they don't need to be adding too many gameplay types without refining Sonics first

Sonic games from Adventure to 2006 or so were dumping grounds for half-baked experimental gameplay that Sonic Team refused to commit to and polish, instead focusing on adding more gameplay types. At best you'd have a few good gameplay types that are fun but underused and then a whole lot of shit nobody cares about you'd have to wade through in between.

Sonic Unleashed to Generations finally had them learn that there was one part Sonic fans wanted most, and then stick to making that better.

I can't be surprised if they're unambitious for this game because ambition and Sonic Team seems to have terrible results. At best, they should have added a new gameplay gimmick or two for the entire game revolve around.
