Protesters Surround KKK Gathering In Charlottesville

Then what's the point of these threads? To stew in resentment or change minds with facts?
Facts have been presented to you. Has your mind changed? I see you in every thread even somewhat involving police. What have you learned from your interactions with multiple posters? Because you still jump in with the same rhetoric every time.

Really? I've noticed a lot more free flowing discussion lately. Even if you don't agree with all sides.

I disagree with just everything you've said up to here but you're absolutely on point about this. This is for both gaming and the off-topic sides.

I didn't know what happened to Bish until now, so some good did come out of your BS. Kudos.

Bull fucking shit

This forum is worse off without Bish, by a million times.

Bullshit.

He gave me six months shortly after the election for simply disagreeing with someone who was openly fanning the flames of hysteria. My ban message was simply 'well done'. It was later ruled completely out of line and unfounded. He was out of control.

Just because someone uses their power to turn a forum into a place where opinions you don't personally like are silenced immediately doesn't mean they were doing a good job. It means they were abusing their power. Funny how that's okay when one person you agree with does it, but fascist when someone you don't does the same thing.

The rift between de Blasio and the NYPD began when hhe campaigned on stopping the ineffective stop-and-frisk policy that primarily targeted minorities. The cops took it as an attack on them. Then de Blasio talked about how he had to give "the talk" to his mixed-race son if he ever encountered a cop. The NYPD saw criticism as anti-cop and turned their backs on him for it.
Basically cops, like most authoritarian tough guys, are giant whiny babies who can't take any criticism.

Annual reminder that there are no good cops.

I think for you, you think you are standing up for what you believe is reasoned debate.

I think for others, you aren't a racist, but are racist enabling, because for them you lack the ability to understand what they feel are truths about policing in the United States, because the facts are not presented in a manner to your liking

Me personally? I think you're probably a libertarian or something, but I don't have enough to go off this thread to develop an opinion about you.

Any other Charlottesville GAFers? I live here.

It's a small town where changes to these statues/parks were big headlines for a while. This KKK gathering was well known in advance and there was no hope for them coming in and not getting a piece of this community's mind.

It's a very liberal place. Even if some of the people who showed up to be pro-KKK were from near here, they are not at all representative of who you'll meet if you walk around town.

Racism and cops killing unarmed people is a "discussion", sickening

You're just not looking at things from both sides. If a police officer is racist and an unarmed person is a minority, then of course the officer is going to shoot them. If fewer people were minorities they probably wouldn't get shot.....as often.

Yeah, it doesn't look good for the police, but protestors weren't letting the KKK leave when they wanted to. We're the police supposed to let an angry mob destroy them?

No idealistic response please.

The KKK baited people. Despite being racist shitbags police are sworn to uphold the law, even if it's against their best interests. Maybe this particular force wasn't infiltrated by white supremacists, but now detractors have his as ammunition to say they were right. How can the police win in this particular situation?

put all cop wives in jail for being cop lovers, thats what i think

I know someone who, when I met them was a teacher and pretty compassionate and progressive. She married a cop, and she's still a nice person, but holy shit she's gone full in on that Blue Lives Matter stuff. I can understand why, it probably sucks to think that people are gunning for your loved one just because of what he does for a living. But I think its also closed her mind off to why there is a "backlash" against law enforcement to begin with.

I use backlash in quotes, because I think its just people being exposed to the truths due to omnipresent recording devices, that they can't dismiss as simple anecdotal testimonies.

Funny how that's rarely said while they're gunning down black people on a daily basis for even the most minor of offenses. Like staring...sitting...walking....complying...breathing etc., and yea I don't give a fuck about the free speech of the KKK of listening to "both sides" of why the police constantly gun down POC or entertaining the blue lives matter shit.

The police didn't get into the middle of a clash after standing on the sidelines.

They escorted them to and fro in the beginning.

Well that's because this event was known for awhile, as someone else pointed out. Have you read the full article in the OP?

Maybe minorities should try not being Minorities

The people he disagreed with were 98.4% of the time Gamergators and racists.

Or Pro Xbox and perceived anti Sony during the launch of their respective systems. Basically turning the gaming side into a Pro Sony utopia and what I feel is responsible for the majority negative opinion GAF receives on the internet. It can cut both ways.

It hasn't full recovered yet but it's much better than it was

Cops are just another gang, the most organised and dangerous in America. Their attitudes and treatment of minorities and civilians in general are disgusting and terrifying. Since
So many places seem unwilling to deal with the problem, you can't blame people for saying fuck the police.

But bish was a terrible admin. Angry, snide, and prone to going on ridiculous ban rampages on some "I had a shitty day" power trip. gaf is a vastly better place without him.

This thread has reminded me as a white man that getting banned for going #notallcops last year was probably the best thing that could have happened to my view on race relations and the nature of the police force in America.

Sometimes y'all need to listen before jumping to the defense of police officers.

Major respect for this.

o_O

Jesus the person admits it helped them and was a positive thing and you respond with that?

Some people can't help but be contrarian just to be contrarian. Filling some kind of emotional void or something.

I sure indeedly did. The post was meant to correct your- unintentional or otherwise- framing of this as the police heroically jumping to the aid of the Klan when they tried to leave.

When the full picture is that the police were always there, on the Klan's side, escorting them around, and it was only until the end of the event when things got heated and- as a consequence of already being there- got in place to shield the Klan.

Regardless, I just want everyone to be on the same page. The police didn't suddenly and reflexively rise up to the occasion of protecting human beings about to be ripped apart. They were always there as the Klan's blue shield, and that's the part people have contention with.

EDIT: Do we have actual confirmed knowledge of bishop's apparent ban waves?

Oh God, that and the runes. I'd hate to have my show be popular among racists like that.

Yeah, I go to a gun range at least once a week, and so many people think they are damned Viking Warriors now, Odin patches, Mjolnir patches, anything Nordic patches and they've got tickets to Valhalla.

Literal patches that say "One Ticket to Valhalla"

But, I wear Notorious RBG shirts to the range, so I'm guilty of trolling myself.

That's an actual shirt? Awesome.

That TV show Vikings made it popular for supremacists to have ratty braids and dreadlocks.

Which doesn't even make sense, because in records from England during the Viking invasions the English were very vocal about how the Vikings were big on combs and mirrors and generally kind of pretty.

Shoot. This is like challenging my worldview right now. I didn't even realize that was going on post-election. Sure it seemed like everybody was going through emotional trauma but I had no idea it got that bad.

Oh that's odd, I expected more rationality and common sense out of the Ku Klux Klan

Look I'm going to be perfectly honest with you, I stand by my opinion of bish, but I have to admit to myself I have had, since childhood, a pretty serious aversion to anyone in a position of authority, especially authority that is abused, unearned, or undeserved. My opinions of bish and the moderation team is biased as a result.
But I still maintain he was a fuckboy.

This is good stuff.

As long as violence didn't break out, or any rights violated, then I don't have any problem with it. And it seems the police escort was there so the KKK shitheads could leave the park. So whatevs.

There's a good chance that ban was unwarranted if it was Bishoptl. We all know what happened there.

Ah, I figured this was the case when I read EV's post a while back.

I attended a focus group that talked about mental health and police approach to responding to distress, and I brought up the fact that even in the face of civil lawsuits that cost taxpayers money, there's still no reform. The biggest incentive in the US is money and even that isn't a big enough motivation for police to change their practices.

Police have facilitated their own reputation and there is no other side to argue.

I applaud these protestors because the mayor's suggestion to ignore racism emboldens them. Harassment and racial abuse aren't curbed by ignoring them.

But anti-Klan protester Precious Williams told WVTF's Sandy Hausman that she wanted to come "because I believe that if you just stay silent, nothing gets done."

I have to agree. This sent a very strong message that the klan isn't welcome there. A right to assemble is one thing, being part of an organization that murdered and lynched African Americans, you better be ready for a bit of pushback.

For me, I'm just so puzzled by those who bring up us vs them and even in the face of facts, still hold on to certain notions that are contrary to reality. I don't understand that mindset.
