The black PS3 is pure sex.
Looks expensive as hell.

Naturally; it hides all those silly flaws. Silver really brings some of the design oddities to the fore, like that foot-like thing underneath the overhang; it's as if it'll tip over if it isn't there?

And could someone get more specific about the 360 design hate? I for one really grew to like it, and I'd like to know what makes it so toy-like besides its color.

The design is way better than Xbox 360, in my opinion. Where as Xbox 360 is a cocktail of everything thought fashionable, the PS3 has a distinct, unique look.

I do understand where he's coming from though. I don't even use the eject button on the face of the 360 since it'll fingerprint up the silver accent. It'll probably be a pain in the ass to keep both that and the black (glossy) Ps3 clean.

I can't help it, my room is a dust magnet. I've got to wipe this stuff down some time. But chrome accents aside, the 360 looks surprisingly un-fussy. Let's see if Sony notices.

It's slightly smaller by volume than the Xbox 360.

Remember how big the controller is (the size of a CD basically). Now compare this picture below. Remember how big the controller is and you can get a feel for how big the PS3 is.

I can understand if some don't think the system looks that great while in the horizontal position (it does look kinda awkward), but it looks stunningly elegant in the vertical position, which is how I'll be placing it.

The best look of the three next gen machines IMO.

Marketing/PR materials for both the PS3 and Xbox360 prominently feature them in the upright position. Ventilation differences between horizontal and vertical can be dealt with and the laser eye is *always* going against gravity, regardless of position. If that mechanism is poorly designed, it could just as easily be affected by gravity in the horizontal position as it could be in the vertical.

Still, the eye sliding left-right becomes up-down sliding when the machine is put vertically and of course it's then more affected by gravity. It's easier to go left or right than go up on the mechanism.
May not the difference of the century as a result but i'm sure you're going to tap maybe one or two more year out of your mechanism.

As for ventilation, i don't fear the position of the console.

The thing about video game consoles is that regardless of how "sexy" they look initially, you'll just stop noticing them a couple of years later.

I have a Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox 360. The PS2 and 360 were added within the last 6 months, and all three are starting to blend together.

Showing other people is nice though, but when I'm alone, it's just another video game machine to dust off.

The PS3's design (esp. the controller) is unbelievably bad IMO.

To think that a piece of crud like the Phantom can look better... it's quite mindboggling how Sony is losing the plot when it comes to design. Aside from the PSP which looks great I've been thinking Sony's products generally have been really looking pretty piss poor for a while now.

Of all the things to worry about; the SpiderStation 3 is the least of Sony's worries when it comes to good design. The font's fine to me.

Personally, no, I love the design of the console, but the Spider-Man font REALLY bothers me - in fact, I think it ruins the entire flow of the console when it's in the vertical position. It just has a very sleek look, if they'd put PS3 in the same font that it is on the top of the PS2 it would enhance the height of the case and the sleekness of its vertical flow. As it is, that stumpy font, combined with spelling out the entire word "Playstation" puts a really long horizontal feature on a console that (when it's in the vertical position) should be accentuating its height.

I dont like the PS3 design, everyone was complaining about the size of the original Xbox. But look at the size of the PS3 its huge! They should return to the dual shock controller instead of this "thing". Its look like a cheap 3rd party controller.


I haven't seen Rev or PS3 in person thoug.
I thought the Xbox360 was ugly, but I saw it a few days ago and I really liked the design.

but is it? have you seen the pic with the dude with gloves on holding the controller? it was teeny tiny itty bitty small (the controller) in his hands... and if he is an average joe, then this system is realtively small.

Revolution is only a box, but being so small it can't help but look good.

Also, PS3 is taller but thinner than X360. It looks bigger because it curves out and the X360 curves in.

I think it's pretty silly that GAF can argue for 4 pages about how a console looks. Of course, looks are subjective and everyone will have their own opinion, but it's obvious that a lot of these posts are more about "my console is better than yours."

I like both the PS3 and 360. I think they both look just fine and do a good job of representing "next gen" style. I hope Sony ditches the spidey font and just puts a big PS3 logo on it instead. The 360 looks kind of plane jane, but I like the idea of consumers customizing it with faceplates... or stickers if you are j. allard. In particular the blue faceplate is quite nice. The Rev is the weakest of the 3. I don't see anything inspirational about designing a box. Throwing said box in a slanted stand doesn't help.

totally agreed. Its so freakin cheap from Sony to use an OLD an existing font. Its like creating a new Automobile and using the "Arial" font. Hilariously foul. If they keep this font, sony fails.
