But seriously, what's up with the character limit? Only half of my damn screen is used when I fill up the limit.

FIX THIS SHIT SONY!!!

in that case install skype on your pc and play at the same time...no need to wait for x-chat crap. same for BC crowd, stop being cheap and get a ps2 or better yet get the emulator on pc.

If PC running Skype is a good substitute for cross-game console voice chat, PC running IRC makes cross-game console text chat unnecessary.

In reality, neither is that good of a substitute compared to having something implemented on the console.

The text chat is awesome.

Being in a chat room and having the chats displayed as messages is pretty cool. Can get overwhelmed quickly I'm sure, though.

The character limit BLOWS.

The censoring BLOWS.

If you join a chat, turn off the system and come back you'll still be in that chat. That's kinda cool. I guess you stay in it til it's deleted or you leave.

Oh, if someone has a keyboard or keypad it'll very quickly make you want to plug in a keyboard heh. I hate trying to get my words out using a game controller.

This shit needs a PC client, too.

why the hell cant they tell me i need a friggin update before i load my game up?

i sat down on my couch, alcohol in hand ready for some demons souls and it wasnt after the nice long load that they let me know, ugh.

Well, it does, except I'd suggest Teamspeak instead of Skype... I've been using "cross-game voice chat" since ~2002.

Trophy stuff being faster is worthwhile though.

There is a limit because of the bubble chat while you're playing games, and doing other things with the chatbox out of the way. I like the bubble chat, but it is getting in the way of the box chatters.

Yea, fun stuff. I'm now trying shows I never watched, like Hell's Kitchen. SF4 should be a lot better with groups now. People can probably set up tournaments via the chat. Sure people could get a laptop, or run to their pc to view irc, but my pc is like 10ft away. For me it's one or the other. I used to do it with aim (running back and forward) but now I don't need to. Glad.

Also, when you pick the full screen option it doesn't fill the screen, it's windowboxed.

It's better to just zoom in with the browser, than use full screen from the website. R2 when you have the webpage on full screen (r3). It's the real full screen.

I'm really disappointed, GDC was a few days ago I expected some megaton update, I mean text chat really, I hope its just a foundation for a more meaningful update.

anyways I'm thankful for any improvements but Sony please kick it up a notch.

edit: at least trophies and trophy comparison don't take all day long to load also I like how if you or your friend didn't play a certain game it will show "----" rather than 0%.

yeah, the zoom feature for the web and pics works real good.

Anyone who has updated the FW got the Sony official Bluetooth headset?

Has the low volume (unable to increase) bug been fixed in this update?

I just got the headset, I still don't know how to turn off this thing, it just keeps flashing green until a couple minutes after I turn off the ps3.

To turn it off just hold it down until you finish two passes of blinking lights. Easiest to just watch the tv and it says at the top right when it is disconnected.

For some reason the PS3 doesn't output my MP3s als Multichannel anymore. Before that it my AVR always said multichannel (even if it was stereo, I guess it means that the PS3 is doing the decoding stuff) but now it jumps back to "Stereo". That's new.

You know what I wanna see on the next FW update, besides what people are begging (x game invite/chat, Music/comic store, PS2 BC)?

- Background downloading while watching a blu ray movie
- Install game while downloading
- User rating system on the PSN store. What I mean is you can rate based on a 5 or 10 star system every game/movie/tv show you purchased/rented, maybe they could even let you write a 2 line comment on it. I think that would be useful.

Any 1 of those 3 will be good for me.

Indeed. Although I'm not sure if it's really a problem.

Its far far too low. If I'm playing online, my squad can barely hear me. I have to virtually shout down the mic for it to be heard.

I hope this issue is FW related and not device related as that would suck quite a lot.

So far I never encounterd this problem. Also, if I check the XMB loudness measure thingy it seems to be in the middle when I'm speaking with my normal voice. If I really yell it goes red. I don't know if I would change it if I could...

If you pair the headset in standard bluetooth mode you can crank it up real high, so it seems software related.

how does that work? You just flicking between browser windows and popping the chat up every now and then?

Does the XMB notify you when someone replies to a chat? That'd be good if you're at least in the XMB (browser, music etc). Even better with a brief bit of the message so you can see whether to go and reply (like an email popup notification on a computer)

Quickly updated, but didn't have time to really check anything out..but..

The character limit makes reasonable sense given that the conversation is popped up in in-game overlays? Seems like how much they can fit in an overlay (without making the overlay distractingly big) is the limiting factor there..

If in multiple chatrooms, do the overlays indicate anything about which chatroom its referring to?

This is more of a suggestion also than a question..but..I guess chatrooms aren't persistent when you log off and then log on? And also, what happens if the person who created the room logs off? Does everyone get kicked? If so..I think ownership should pass to someone else in the room..and also, if chatrooms could persist across log on/log off, it might be handy..to have a chatroom you're automatically logged into when you switch on your machine.

On a different note, I was thinking it would maybe be cool for Sony to come up with a kind of 'url' system for linking into games..so you could link to a specific part of a game or a multiplayer session within a game from text chat..or even from websites so you can link into games directly for users on the ps3 browser. That idea is kind of motivated by a desire to increase 'linkability' of LBP levels, but I'm sure people would find uses for such a system well beyond that..

Figured I'd ask here, since it's somewhat connected to the text chat:

Right now, here in Sweden only the English layout Sony Bluetooth Keyboard is sold. Does anyone know if and when localized versions of the keyboard will be released? I'm thinking of buying the keyboard, but I'm a bit reluctant at the moment since I'd rather want a Swedish localization on it.

If your notifications are set to 'on' - each chatroom comment shows up on screen like the subject of a regular XMB message. If you're in multiple rooms it doesn't seem to diferentiat which room the comment is coming from in the overlay. The rooms do stay active when the orignal creator leaves and it's easy to rejoin even if you reboot (as long as you didn't 'delete' the chat room - 'leaving' it is fine and keeps the link active).

Ooh..so you can keep a room active even if everyone in the room logs off? Or does someone always have to be logged in?
