Still, I like PSN IRC :D!

Tell that to teens obsessed with text messaging and twitter. Tell them they are living in the 1800s and see how it goes.

Funniest thing is "text messaging" has been there since launch.

We are talking text CHAT here.

I think I will spend a lot less time on GAF and more time on IRC PSN. I can talk about games WHILE I'm playing them, in multiple chat rooms. Take that, GAF.

PSN 2.7 = The New GAF.

Evillore's going to need a bail out from the US government.

Yeah, PSN chat is a very cool little feature. It is nice to be playing a game while getting a constant text bubble pop. Typing is obviously slower than speech which means that the conversations move at a nicer pace. If it was voice chat then a room of 10 people would be insane (KZ2 pre/post game lobby!). I think it is great to log into a room, boot up a game and just play and chat. If I am focused on playing then that is what I can do, but when there is a lull in the game I can pull up the chat group and quickly catch up on the discussion.

This of course does not mean that there is no room for a harmonized voice chat function. But for what the text chat is, it is great.

Normally I would recognize this as sarcasm but I'm not so sure in this thread...

With his subsequent sentence I believe he's just saying that with perhaps 16 people (or 48, potentially, if in 3 active rooms), text is more manageable than voice..which I think would be true. It can get hectic enough at times as is..imagining putting voice in there for everyone would be chaotic to say the least.

Voice if and when it comes will need to be in smaller groups..but I hope it will integrate neatly with the text chat system, because that's what I'll still be using 90% of the time.

The chat is like faaaaaaar better on what i was expecting, yesterday was tonz of fun chatting with you guys.

Previously I was unable to watch the 480p versions on Hulu because the browser didn't seem able to handle it and it'd be a choppy mess. For anyone else in the same position previously, is it any better now?

surely it works better while playing SFIV than in Killzone 2, the latter just seems to eat the reserved SPU alive :lol

Also, here's some ideas I've seen thrown about in chat for improvement:

1) Censorship fixes (duh)

2) Removing the message length cap, and either capping pop-up messages to fit, or having a fixed maximum size pop-up that scrolls slowly through longer messages

3) Integrate with PS1/PS2/BD/DVD playback

4) With so much screenspace available in chat currently, there's room for features like, perhaps, a live media feed which grabs screenshots taken with the screenshot facility and displays them for others in the chat room. Youtube uploading could also perhaps even be hacked to allow for live broadcasting to others in the room from your game. Basically providing a live window for others in chat into your game. Then make video and image taking standard across all games, and... :o

5) Custom banner pics for a chatroom? (e.g. if one wanted to create an official GAF themed room etc.)

6) Participant list displayed always

7) Add current activity to participant list (so you can see what games others are playing without hitting the friends list)

8) Notifications when other participants unlock trophies..or perhaps sames notification covering your whole friends list? Kind of like LBP notifications.

9) Lynx ads (hurhur)

IMO there seems to be tonnes of potential for building on this..they could really turn it into almost a 'shared homepage' for your ps3 activity.

edit - slight side note, but thinking about youtube uploading..i wonder when youtube allows live broadcasts (inevitable imo..like qik.com), if ps3 will be able to do that pretty much immediately..letting you live broadcast from your games to youtube and the web. That could perhaps make the above idea of live broadcasts into your chatroom more easily implemented too.

One or two people mentioned seeing improvements in Hulu.
After reading I had to go check for myself.

Now.... I didn't really use it before (because it sucked so bad on the ps3). But I certainly wasn't able to get any use out of it since the update either.
Now.... that doesn't mean it didn't get better. But in my opinion it's still garbage.

(Hardwired connection FWIW)

It'd also be cool if there was a central server for chat-rooms so you could search and join them. And obviously with that, password protection would have to be implemented.

Yes, too MySpace-y.

The argument seemed to be that if pop-caps in rooms were raised, it'd make it easier to see who was saying what. Right now with 16 max it's not really a problem I don't think.

I came here to mention how upset I was that Sony delayed my Lost BD watching last night with a worthless feature, but I think I stumbled into the Land of Denial here.

So, I'm going to just sit there getting shot up in Killzone so I can participate in text chat?

The Penny Arcade strip got it right. This is yet another half-assed feature by Sony that will only help justify the decision by those of us who use the 360 as their primary gaming device. I think Killzone 2 is a great game, but I would play it a lot more if it was on the 360.

My PSN ID is RichP.

Can't you just chat with people in game you are supposed to chat with rather than chat with your friends playing whatever they are playing?

Of course txt chat is not suitable for quick communication during active game session.

The 2.70 update was required to watch a Blu-ray disc? Erm... not sure that's true. It says an update is required, that's to connect to the PSN. Watching a BD inherently disconnects from the PSN by design, so why would you need to update?

If you want to talk to your friends while playing whatever, there is this great 1800's technology called the telephone. Not only does it allow you to chat cross-game, but even cross-household chores, and in some cases if you're really up to date with the technology, cross-streets, and cross-countries. Pretty amazing stuff, check it out.

No need to go back that for when there is a present day feature available on other platforms called "Voice Chat".

This isn't meant for 'typing while you play'. I don't sit here crashing into corners in WipeoutHD because I'm typing. I play a race, pop back into chat if I saw something interesting was said that I want to respond to, then go on and play the next race. Meanwhile you can keep an eye on the chat via the overlaid pop-ups while playing.

It's a common touchpoint for a group of people as they play..but not something you have to be constantly messaging with or even paying attention to if you don't want. You touch base when it suits, while keeping an eye without distraction from your pad. When playing = one way communication from group to you, When not = n-way communication between group and you in the chat window.

Voice lets you do the latter with less distraction from your pad, that's one of its upsides. But it has its downsides too. Different methods, different contexts, different results... even though I may personally prefer text I can see the utility in both, and I think it's worth Sony providing both.

I think the question is: why is chat better than messaging if we're doing this outside fo the gameplay? If I can already send a message to someone from the XMB (or Xbox blades) when waiting to respawn, then what does chat do over this?

so far, the only thing I think it adds is the group dynamic.

but, at that point, once you have 4 or more people together, you would think it would be easier to just talk to them whenever you want instead of having to wait til you're done playing and then type to them...

bah, whatever.

We have party chat running on our 360s. "Fo realz".

It's almost funny, in a "the PS3 is one of the biggest console abortions of all time" kind of a way.

The party TEXT chat felt more like a kick in the balls than a genuinely useful new feature.

- multiple people
- no need to open separate messages. displays lines one under another
- pressing PS button takes you directly to chat window instead of having to navigate any of the XMB
- loads faster than the in-game XMB (godsend for Warhawk, which pauses during the XMB transition)

No, but it's required to go into the PSN Store, which I always like doing when I fire my PS3 up on either that Thursday or the soonest time I fire it up after Thursday.

It's an OCD thing, I think. I do the same thing on "360 Tuesdays".

If you're doing it while gaming though, why not just send a text message from the XMB "in game" in between rounds?

You want to know the legit one time I would use the text-based party chat? It's when I've got a DVD/BD running. Yeah. Exactly.

More button presses, longer pauses between responses

It's faster to drop a line in a chat room populated with 15 ppl rather than create a message, select multiple recipients and send it?

Dude, between you and the guy who was praising the "slowness" of text chat because voice chat was too fast for him, I don't know what to say.

I will say I'm very happy that you guys are so enamored of your PS3s, and Sony needs more customers like you. Because personally, I felt like I bought a really expensive Blu Ray player. Don't get me started on Home.

I hope MAG kicks ass in 2009, at least. Looking forward to that one.

OK, maybe I can learn something new.

The reason we use our 360s is because KZ2's wack matchmaking doesn't always put us on the same team. And even then, the party chat is preferred because we don't have the background "noise" generated by "YoNutzMyMowth89" and the rest of his squad.

Did they do any work on the matchmaking? I haven't played KZ2 since 1.2, don't know if there's been an update since then.
