PS4 does not support CD and SACD

But they will have PS1, PS2, PS3, PSM BC using Gaikai but seems that not at launch.

I think we should set a standard definition that "Backwards Compatibility" means you can use the original media of the previous device on the new device.

Streaming, Digital-Download, Remake, Remaster, etc... should not count as "Backwards Compatibility".

Otherwise I could say that my Phone is backwards compatible with film since I can watch old movie clips on YouTube.

The PS4 will not have any sort of native backwards compatibility.
Do you know this or are you just saying that you think that'll be the case? I was expecting native PS1 and PS2. I hope they get the ball rolling on that Gaikai solution quickly.

Maybe they're using a less expensive lens that only reads DVD and Blu-ray? I don't know, but sounds weird to me. I can't image the cost savings (if any) would be that high.

That's not really fair because YouTube exists as a free service for any device on the Internet. The reason you don't say that is because anyone can get on YouTube with any thing and it's also not really for watching films.

I get where you're coming from though, and I know the answer: if you can play the games that you have already purchased for a previous platform on it, it's BC.

aww damn it, there i was wanting to play ps4 games pirated on to cds!

*insert disc 104*

on more serious note, not being able to play audio cds is a bit of a dick move just to try sell shitty online streaming services.

So what's the bandwidth quantity used to stream one hour of PSone gaming through Gaikai, assume a 4mbps stream - 1.8GB in an hour? So I end up using more bandwidth than the size the content. So it appears that many blu-ray players lack CD support themselves - only Blu-Ray and DVD support.

Oh, lord.

I was hoping for at least PS1 compatibility. I mean, how am I going to replay Castlevania SotN every year?

Licence it, from who, themselves? CD is a Sony format, it's surprising that they chose not to include it tbh.

They split the royalties with Philips, so there may be a real cost to them for CD and Super CD. Plus the extra diode and complexity of the OPU.

Backwards Compatibility means to play in a console the games you had a previous one from the same manufacturer. So if the PS1, PS2, PS3 games I purchased or got with PS+ in PS3, PSP or PS Vita are available in PS4 this is BC.

But partial, because the discs wouldn't be supported.

That's their long term idea according to Perry. Yoshida said that they're also exploring emulation in PS4 (for PS1 and PS2 I understand). In this case it also may include the full BC.
Yeah, but it's just...not the same.

I want to be able to use my discs, dammit! :(
Yep same here. But at least I'd like to play the ones I have in PSN, even if it's with lag and compression artifacts (something we have to see because if PS4 has dedicated hardware for streaming I assume that it's going to work well with decent connections).

I love how if the PS doesnt have something, it's not important. Funny. As for still buying CDs, Amazon just ensured that I will continue buying them since they include an immediate MP3 download of the CD when I buy one.

what the fuck? so it won't play ps1 disc games? i still regularly play tony hawk's pro skater 1&2 on my ps3 and those will NEVER be psone classics (if they continue to support those).

every single playstation system has played ps1 discs (psp and vita through remote play). this is bs.

Im guess Im old, I still use CD's all the time, my ps3 is hooked up to my stereo in my living room. So yeah this is disappointing, but as long as I can run my ipod though my ps4 (which Im assuming Ill be able to) then I'll be ok with this.

I have to say I dont really understand it though, I thought CD-ROM compatibility was pretty much a given if something plays DVD's and Blu-Rays...

The fact that Sony is acknowledging how easy it is and still saying they don't want to talk about their plans doesn't give me a good signal about it.
It gives me the idea that PS1 games on PSN will be supported, that's it since there is no CD support.

Time to dust of those PSone's. Sony is going full Cloud/DD for BC. It's good to see Sony is cutting corners to have that low launch price at least.

Rip your CD to your computer ---> stream it to your PS4.

Would not be surprised to see PS4 also have many streaming options from tablets and smartphones.

Its called progress.

Will wait for the next 20 replies giving me some hyperbolic outrageous scenario about how this isn't feasible for you.

Why are people reading this to me no PSX support? Just because it doesn't support audio discs doesn't mean it can't physically read the CD medium. Have they actually said one way or another?

I was hoping for at least PS1 compatibility. I mean, how am I going to replay Castlevania SotN every year?
Well, if you want to do it right, you'd use hardware capable of outputting 240p and play it either on an interlaced CRT or use something like an XRGB.

I have ripped all of my CDs so it isn't a huge issue for me, but my wife however has many Christmas CDs she likes to play during the holidays and the PS3 is what she uses to do so. I could rip them for her, but that isn't how she likes to use them. It seems like such a trivial thing to remove for Sony.

You are talking about digital downloads, I'm talking about original physical media.
If I'm holding a PS1 disk in my hand, only devices that can play that disk are Backwards Compatible with PS1.

To me, once they have re-sold it as a digit download, that DOWNLOAD not a PS1 game, it's a PSN game. If the PS4 can play it, then you can say the PS4 is BC with PSN.

ソニー・コンピュータ・エンターテンイメントのアンドリュー・ハウス氏、インタビュー終わり。まずプレイステーション4ではSACD、CDはサポートしません。

Andrew House said PS4 does not support CD and SACD in interview.

So no CD music ripping.

So just rip it on your computer and transfer it over with a USB stick.

As long as Sony still lets me dump music from a usb flash drive to the PS4's hard drive, that's fine. I tend to rip my albums to a computer first anyway.

I haven't purchased a music cd in 10 years, so not a big loss for me personally. It sucks that PS4 won't have native support for PS1 discs, but that was bound to happen at some point. PS1 is three generations old now.

I haven't touched a CD in years. There's certainly never been one in my 360 or PS3, so I can understand why Sony would remove the function. Keep them costs down by removing irrelevant features, good call.
