PS4 FW 1.75 coming soony (3D Blu-ray support) #4theplayers

Soooooo we can expect a new feature every week now even if it's:

Stability
Stability
3D blu ray
Stability
Stability
Suspend / Resume...

Right .....RIGHT!!!!

I bet they took this out of their big update in August to compete with Microsoft. Not that it's a bad thing or anything. Competition is good.

The optimist in me is thinking that the August update is substantial enough for them to release a feature out early in response to MS.

Please Sony get the main features you promised with the console quicksharp!

The timing of this "new feature" is just completely bizarre.

But hey, at least some people are getting something they've been pining for.

I still want DLNA support most.

I was tempted to play devil's advocaat in the Xbox preview thread and say that 'technically 3D bluray isn't out yet, it's just a preview. Sony could still beat it to launch' but figured I'd get shot down (and it was frankly unlikely).

I think the Xbox preview doesn't even have 3D bluray playback - it's just enablers, and it'll need a bluray app update?

Anyway, summary seems to be

- 3D bluray announced in Xbox thread: LOL Soony invented 3D bluray and Xbox did it first. 3D is soon great
- 3D bluray announced as probably first in Sony firmware thread: who cares, 3D is niche. Give me DLNA and mp3

I'd love for text of messages to scroll across the top of the screen like the PS3. Or at least go directly to the message if I press the PS button within a certain amount of time like game invites.

Wait so everyone owning an Xbox one wanted 3d bluray playback and ps4 owners couldn't give a fuck?

Riiiiiiight.

Yeah they don't care because it's all about games ;) Or that kind of crap..

I wished WiiU also had BD support lol, not even 3D, but that machine has a BD-rom but doesn't use it 100%.. now that's weird.

Called it. Xbox announces 3d bluray support coming soon so of course Sony was going to do the same.

Theyre perfectly content to sit on their asses until their competitor forces them to do something.

Why go first?

The timing for this update is awfully close to the Xbox One update. You don't write such code in such a short time, so were both waiting on something before they could implement it or was this just a big amount of coincidence or something else?

Anyhow, great that both are brining back 3D playback.

Great, now point out those people who suddenly have a different opinion and your post might actually be correct. Now you're just lumping lots of folks together.

Nintendo don't want to pay license fees.

Same with the Wii, that could play DVDs if you used homebrew.

No it's responses like this that are actually silly..

The ps4 was never going to be a killer Blu-Ray player, it's a basic Blu-Ray player, it's primary function is that of a games console, so no it's not trite nor tired.. I bought my ps4 to play games, it's rather good at it, I hope Sony keep that premise in mind when developing fw updates...

So where is resume play. The biggest/most next gen feature I personally thought, when they unveiled the ps4. That's for the games and games machine yet nothing. The Xbox One dies it really well and they didn't even to it it that much. Not as much as Sony.

Hard to believe people are clamouring for such a shitty feature. 3D TVs are a gimmick. Would rather have DNLA and background mp3 playback.

Freudian slip?

Chances are both Xbox One & PS4 had to wait for the same reason & they are both getting it now because they worked out the problem that was holding it back.
Good point, I don't think the average reader here knows what coming. Everyone and I mean everyone has to comply with the same HTML5 <video> standards which now includes smooth streaming (adaptive streaming), DRM (both Playready for VOD and WMDRM10 for DTCP-IP) and Metadata. It's very possible Sony, besides using Microsoft's DRM is also using or complying with Microsoft's player APIs. I.E. They have to wait for updates from Microsoft so Sony supporting Blu-ray 3D at about the same time Microsoft supports it is exactly as you state.

The HTML 5 adaptive streaming player is used by every feature in both consoles (both will be supporting the same features). The HTML5 <video> player will support 3D as will the blu-ray player and Skype. Both consoles will likely be serving blu-ray to other platforms in the home and that requires adaptive streaming which will use the HTML5 <video> adaptive streaming player in clients on the home network.

This is not speculation! It's part of what HTML 5.0 will support and it's known as RUI or DLNA CVP2.

Head mounted VR goggles will also be used with HTML5 <video> 3D....

All this is timed to start in 2014 (Certification for DLNA CVP2 platforms starts Septemner 2014); FCC mandate for cable companies requiring them to support DLNA CVP2, HTML 5.0 which has the APIs to Java and DLNA to support DLNA CVP2 and ATSC 2.0 OTA which uses the blu-ray codec and supports 1080P & S3D, XTV and Non Realtime Transmission.

Yeah cause that's what happened. That's exactly what every person said in both threads.

Do I get this right?
The PS4 firmware update (3D Blu-Ray support) will come next week.
And the XBone Update will come next month?
So Sony will be first? :p

I have said this before. Sony doesn't want u getting rid of your PS3 just yet. There is absolutely no reason the PS4 couldn't have had a basic media player and 3D playback from jump. I believe if these features were implemented in the beginning ppl would of traded in their PS3's for a PS4 sooner. That would of lead to a potential loss of sale for upcoming PS3 titles that were coming down the road. Many of us would of kept our PS3 anyway but they didn't give us a choice by withholding these features. I just Don't buy the "it's difficult for us to engineer" argument. That's like Sony bringing out a tablet to market that can't view pictures or videos. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. This is the only way it makes sense to me.

I don't think so? Doesn't need any fancy HDMI version - nothing should have prevented both having this at launch other than priorities (which is the most likely reason)

Y'know... why don't your posts ever end up on gaming websites instead of "Tidux says he like pie more than cake". I don't really have anything to contribute, but I'm quoting for more exposure.

Or! Or or or, the technology isn't ready yet. Someone do me a favor and make sure the Jeff Rigby post is at the top of the next page.

All I'm waiting for now is Singstar! Not bothered about DLNA as my TV has that built in anyway so why fire up another device to watch something I can stream direct through the TV.

So, I've never actually watched a movie in 3D even though I have a 3D TV and 2 pairs of glasses (60" Panasonic ST60) - are there any movies that are actually good in 3D that I could get for cheap?

If Jeff Is right and he very well may be why cant Sony give us the explanation that Jeff did instead of pussyfooting around the subject? We are all grown...or most of us are grown folks here and can handle hearing something like that. That would be transparent and the right thing to do when it comes to features of this magnitude.

I also have a 3D TV but I haven't got round to getting some glasses to go with it but I do know that Dredd is a great film and especially in 3D as it really helps enhance some scenes (From seeing it at the cinema) and can be found for cheap so I would suggest that one.

The best 3D Blu Rays I have seen are Dredd, The Avengers, Prometheus, Finding Nemo and Pacific Rim. If you are a fan of any of these films definitely get the 3D Blu Ray.

If you're in the UK the Dredd and Hugo can both be had pretty cheaply. Best movies in 3D though are the animations like Monster Inc/Toy Story/Up etc.

And wow, a MAJOR feature coming in a .5 update.

It's pretty obvious that this was ready and tested for 1.8 so they just decided to merge that into 1.7 so it doesn't have to wait for the rest of 1.8 features. That's why this comes as +.1

No way this was planned as a maintenance release. But you know, shit happens, and competitors release stuff.

Hahaha you Xboners are losing features to hold over us! One by one we close the gap, watch your backs!

Since people are ignoring my follow up post, this obviously isn't a serious post.

Xboners sounds like a name for a porn site.
