The great thing about this is that it opens more sales opportunities for these old games on Sony's store...... I think they should categorize games from all era's though. So if you want a PS1 game, just go to the PS1 section, the bonus would be 4k 60fps, with the patented enhanced textures and trophies...... Still, getting a digital store with 4 generations worth of PS games all auto-enhanced is a huge undertaking....... Just straight bonkers if you ask me.....

I still have a huge tennis bag filled with PS3 games, I have a few PS2 games on disc and no PS1 disc games anymore, but I have quite a few digital PS1 and PS2 games......... So it's looking like Sony will have to offer quite a bit of the PS1 and PS2 games digitally, people will buy them in droves if they are uprezzed to 4k with graphical enhancements and trophies. So it's a win win for Sony.
If it happens I think we can reasonably expect them to be upscaled with faster loading times, but anything that requires coding I.e trophies won't happen. It's not something I want, despite loving trophies if it means only a very few curated and renegotiated games are made available. Just give us the disc back compat for all games (with some having understandably minor issues no doubt), and the few games they can renegotiate, put on the store as well.

If it can play disks of PS1-4, I'll buy it. Not at launch, but I'll buy it. Hopefully they include some emulator/filter/aspect ratio options for PS1 and PS2 games. Integrated save-states would be sick.

Would be super nice if I could retire my PS3 before it kicks the bucket. Just bought 3 cool PS2 JRPG's on eBay.
Oh which ones? I got Buffy, X Files, 24 and Lost (notice a theme lol). Been looking at Deus Ex PS2 and the Silent Hill games. It's kind of like just before PSVR came out and the move controllers were cheap as anything right before they went up in price about 700% lol.

If we get a few more solid sources on PS3 back compatibility there will definitely be a few more I'll pick up.

Call me crazy but I think I'd stretch those 4.3 aspect ratio to widescreen (as long as no part of the image was cropped lol).

I played Silent Hill 1 on PC with higher res and AA and it looked amazing.

Yes, there are quite a few games where it would look fine if he aspect ratio was stretched. Or if there were borders, I wouldn't mind either. I have about 200 console games in the Playstation family and I still have PS2s and PS3s lying around to use those games. I wouldn't mind having the option to play everything on the big TV upstairs on the main console.

Microsoft proved the value of B.C with Xbox. I'm not saying Sony needs to bend over backwards to include it, I'm just saying b.c is the feature that earns my purchase.

OK, it's not that cut and dry.....The majority of the XBONEX BC library, you can play said games elsewhere or better..... Playstation has a huge list of hits across four consoles from both third and first party alike.......If you really want to play old games, would you want to play Oblivion or Rainbow Six Vegas on console, would you want to play Quake 3 PS2 edition when the PC versions exist? The real hook for BC is exclusivity, it's still the hook that gives such a feature value on consoles, just like exclusivity gave PS4 such value..... In essence, you can't compare 4 generations of great PS-1234 games and exclusives to XBOX BC.

Where else can I play Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, Brave Fencer Musashi, Omega Boost, Pandemonium, Valkyrie Profile Silmeria, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Rule of Rose, Rygar, and thousands of others across 4 world leading console boxes, it just can't be beat, so I can understand why people are more stoked for PS BC..... As for me, I'll be playing PS5 games day 1 on PS5......Yet, if Sony delivers here, going back to entire catalogs of consoles is really unprecedented..... This is not drip feed BC in the slightest.....

Romancing Saga
Radiata Stories
Evergrace

All three mint condition. Wanted to check out Romancing Saga since 2 and 3 released on modern consoles recently but not the first one. Not sure if they are even connected but will find out soon enough. The other two I bought on impulse from the same seller since they looked to be in such clean condition.

I still have my whole collection going back to 1995 on disc which include many classics and rare gems.
To play them again on PS5?
THAT would be dream come true

you can easily emulate all PS2 and PS1 (PSP is also extremely easy) games on any modern PC.
fully 100% legal aswell if you insert your legit CD/DVD copies of the games.

I can easily play PS2 games at 4K if I want...
for PS1 you can even just use a Raspberry pi

you can barely emulate any Xbox and Xbox 360 games on anything.
and if Microsoft also expands their back compat to all or nearly all games on Xbox and 360, you'll also have tons of exclusives like Crazy Taxi 3, Otogi 1 and 2, Ninja Gaiden Black, Jet Set Radio Future etc. that are hard to emulate or not emulated successfully yet

BC matters. Microsoft invested in it for a reason - the Xbox One was being outsold by the Xbox 360 for a period. BC helps smooth the transition from one generation to the next, and helps convince people to make the jump. It’s smart.

With Microsoft brining effectively full backwards compatibility to the table at launch, if Sony is stuck attempting to justify why their brand new expensive super powerful console can’t emulate PS1 titles again, they’re going to look ridiculous and out of touch. #ArrogantSony would be trending before the press conference even finished.

Microsoft sure get some shit - and rightfully so in a lot of ways - but BC is one area where Microsoft are getting it right. This is an example of competition being a good thing, because they’re forcing Sony to abandon selling upscaled emulated titles as if they’re legitimately remastered re-releases.

I should be able to put my Silent Hill 2 disc into my PlayStation 5 and play it, because there’s no consumer-focused reason why that’s not possible.

One of the reasons XBOX games are not as well emulated as PS games is because it boils down to interest in the games........
People are more interested in working towards PS emulation because there are simply much more games they want to play from the PS libraries over the Xbox libraries.....

I'd like to imagine that if they were going to include PS3 BC to PS5, they wouldn't have removed Uncharted 2, 3 and TLoU servers a couple months ago.

I'd love it, but I don't see it happening.

It'd be nice, but I find it extremely unlikely.

The emulation would have to be locked down so tight so as to maintain overall system security in the face of literally thousands of potential pieces of software that could behave unexpectedly.

that's not true.
Xbox emulation is underdeveloped because back in the day people thought it would be super easy to emulate because it was basically just a custom PC.

so many ignored it at first and the people that tried to make emulators for it went with the high level approach.
meaning they didn't really try to reverse engineer the system but simply tried to get games running as fast as possible.

then there's the fact that the Xbox itself was a very popular Emulation Box. I mean... people used Xboxes to emulate PS1... so why emulate a system that you use for Emulation in the first place? your emulator box already runs Xbox Games and outputs up to 1080i

the result is lots of lost time and a system that is way harder to emulate than anyone anticipated.

why is it so hard to emulate? because there were multiple dev kits that all compiled games slightly differently, this was also poorly documented because of the aforementioned reasons, so now you need to look up which dev kit was used for every single game, so the emulator knows how to run the game.

it's pretty complicated and noone realised this back in the day.

then for the longest time people just tried to make existing high level emilators work, which also turned out to be the wrong approach.
only now are people starting back from the beginning to really look into low level emulation.

Uncharted 2 & 3 MP need a 60 fps remaster badly! No need for BC.

I think this would work in very well with their 25th anniversary celebrations. Playing off the old nostalgia card it could sit nicely with the “older” gamers and introduce new timers to their catalog of incredible titles.
On an optimistic note, if some old favorites sell well enough we could be looking at sequels to games we have been drooling for.
Add in an option for improved graphics and this could be a real grand slam for Sony.
Anyway, fingers crossed. I am definitely in the side of BC for PS5.

While BC for physical games is nice, I'd like to see it for PSN stuffs as well. I have a small dragons hoard of games on PS3 PSN I've yet to get too and now it's a race to the bottom between having to switch my PS4 out (another small dragons hoard of games there) and my old, busted ass PS3 finally dying.

Lets see if Sony can be the first to win the console wars two generations in a row.. They have gained so much momentum that this next generation is probably the most important generation to make an impact! I would not be surprised if they implement this purely to be seen to giving back to the PlayStation enthusiasts.

That would be fucking great, and I mean literally. I’d love if they can even get PSP and Vita digital libraries on it. It wouldn’t be a day 1 purchase but I would get it within the year(same with Scarlett)

There have been more than a few people at least on GAF asking for remasters of popular games. Just you're interested in playing older games doesn't mean others don't want it. It's a consumer-friendly feature for long-time platform supporters.

Just a few examples:

EA Gives Mass Effect Fans Hope with Confirmation of 'Exciting Remasters' Coming Soon

Mass Effect not remastered is criminal

Bethesda ported Doom 3: BFG Edition to Switch, PS4 and X1, why can't they do the same to Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

One way Bethesda could salvage some good will from the Fallout 76 subscription service.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas really do need to get Special Edition treatment like Skyrim.

Sony where are the other ps3 remasters for ps4?
Im flattered that you linked so many of my threads.

How many people "ACTUALLY" have working PSone and PS2 disc games?
Here on GAF it's likely to be quite a few people. I still have about about 20 PS1 games myself. In "real world" it's probably a few percent of the PS4 population. This could actually be a good thing for people who held on to rarer PlayStation games, because if full BC will actually become a thing their prices will skyrocket. ;)

Would be one of the greatest move ever by Sony if they somehow figured out how to run older PlayStation games on PS5 hardware. Wishful thinking, but I am afraid this isn't going to happen except for PS4 games backwards compatibility :(

I usually wait awhile to buy Sony systems but if the PS5 plays PS1-4 games I'd go in on one a lot quicker.

Because the original consoles were region locked and the developer agreement states that region locking is in place on the platform.

Say you buy a game released in the NTSC:U/C region that has some licensed music in it - the developer may have got a global license, or they may have only licensed it for the territories that it was going to be distributed in. Since Sony have no way of knowing which of these is the actual case, they can't just unilaterally enable play of that disc in all territories.

A chance to re-live the glory days of Ridge Racer? Hell yeah, what about the sequels to Desert Strike? Yes indeed! More so as we are not likely to EVER get new instalments in these franchises...

I'm not going to hold my breath on Sony allowing all PS1 - PS3 discs to be played on PS5. Only thing I expect is them to add titles from PS1 - PS3 on PSN Now with maybe and that's big maybe a feature to download to console similar to gamepass. No way the full librairies of the PS1 - PS3 is playable out the gate. That would be a wonderful pipe dream.

Hasn't there been a few sources hinting at this though? How would it effect you all? Would you buy more/less if it turned out to be true? :)
Wouldn't effect me at all to be honest. I have a long backlog of new games to play instead of revisiting something I've likely played before. No feature is unwelcome though.

I think ps4 bc is probably gonna be a reality.
Ps1 and ps2 is also very possible. There are emulators on the pc that work on even weaker hardware that the ps5 will have, so I imagine this is not so hard to achieve on the ps5.
PS3 though, I don't think so. The cell architecture is very complicated and doesn't work well on x86. So I don't think it's happening on the ps5.
But who knows, even if it's possible technical wise, it doesn't mean that Sony will give it to us. They might offer some games through PSN like with the ps4.

We know PS4 is full BC with PS5, Sony announced this ages ago.

There are more PS2 games on the PS4 than there are Xbox games on the Xbox One.
That's actually a good point. The PS2 library gets a lot of flack though because Sony essentially abandoned it in Aug 2017 even though they released around 50 titles by then.

Meanwhile Original Xbox BC didn't come to the Xbox One until Oct 2017, but they released 39 titles on the system from that point forward until the BC program shut down earlier this year. It was wildly praised when it was up and running - but now that it's also essentially dead (for now?) it's a pretty cut and dry comparison.

A shame on both fronts equally, I say.

its just software at this point, and they already have ps1 and ps2 emulation. They just need to sort out a ps3 emulator and then be done with it. stick with the same PC architecture in the future and this never becomes a problem again.

BC for PS9.
