PS5 hits 92.1M, outsells Switch 2 in Q3; Profits top $15B

Looks like the two million gap with PS4 remains consistent, which tells me the PS5 is doing the same or better than the PS4 in real-world terms given the environments that the PS5 has had to sell in. That's pretty impressive, considering Sony's first party's pretty lacklustre dealings.

Interesting note about the hardware losses; looks like Sony is shouldering some of the cost to keep the hardware moving. That's a solid pro-consumer move that offers Sony a bigger install base, worth highlighting.

With the PS5 not making up the ground on PS4 despite Xbox's diminished state, it's still pretty clear the console market has contracted. I'm curious if the market can continue to support the amount of hardware we're seeing, or if Xbox's next-gen console will just be outright ignored.

Curious how the PS3 was better than the PS4 and 5.

For Sony and shareholders? It wasn't. Gamers got way more interesting games from Sony...

In the console space Xbox is around 28 million right so there is competition it really just died this year. Pc is massive and Nintendo does take away kid gamers from buying Playstation in reality is pretty fierce. I had the same thoughts as you but then i thought about it,and all this at a very high price 5 years later is pretty good.

PC gaming has higher entry price (after that it can be cheaper) if you want to play newest games with console (or better) settings and it's constantly fucked by hardware manufacturers that preferred miners to games (2020-) and now prefer data centers to gamers...

Nintendo always had their own audience (for exclusives) and blue ocean (worked for Wii and switch 1)...

Just an absolute beast, and also goes to show that the average PS5 gamer really doesn't care that much about 1st party exclusives. As long as the PS5 can play all the 3rd party games, most of the XBox published games, and just enough exclusives (doesn't matter if it's 1st, 2nd, or 3rd party), they're going to do just fine.

There was a point a few years ago that the gap was around 5.7m. units

It's going to keep selling because it's the best way to play all the AAA games and avoid dealing with all the BS PC gaming issues that most people don't have time for.

GTA6 is going to take things to the next level.

There's a certain hypocrisy when you compare sales between this thread and the Switch thread.

PS5 has been under PS4 sales basically it's entire life so far yet endless praise for our Sony overlords
Switch 2 is selling better than Switch 1 and has become the fastest selling console ever, yet, somehow, Nintendo is doomed because it's "underperforming"

Ya'll need to make up your minds.

Pc is massive now this became a thing this generation. It sales more games then Playstation easily now. You don't need ps5 specs to get a good experience a 3050 is just fine.

You're already essentially seeing Xbox being ignored with its hardware sales absolutely tanking. I would not at all be surprised if a ton of new PS5 sales were due to Xbox owners switching over.

The console market is just fine, and Sony and Nintendo are proving that in their numbers.

These numbers make sense when you realize Xbox shat the bed this gen so a ton of those potential Series users went with PS5 this time.

Although it's possible once we see those highly anticipated games start to release we could potentially see an increase in the overall marketshare.

They did, but most of those gamers also didn't give a rat's ass about those games. I love the likes of Tokyo Jungle, Rain, and Puppeteer as much as anyone else, but the reality is that those games didn't sell enough and that's why Sony stopped making them. If Puppeteer sold millions of copies, we'd still be getting more of those kinds of games. If PS owners wanted a Tokyo Jungle 2, they needed to speak with their wallets, but they didn't.

Yeah, this shows that price increase will happen at some point if they are indeed losing money on every console sold. Probably closer to GTA release...

3050 is mostly good for competitive games (CS, Fortnite etc.). Try to run new games on any decent settings... PS5 destroys it.

3060 12GB is far better comparison (almost base PS5 level).

Switch 2 had a monster launch. No console with hype is ever fully stocked so it did amazing on that. Other then that they shipped 2.4 million to Japan in q3 because of shortages and ps5 still beat the sales n its 5th year in Q3 it had a terrible q3 in western markets and that's concerning for them.

The only people saying Nintendo is doomed are the Nintendo fanboys.
That's their whole strategy: show up here, say something ridiculous, then sprint back to their little safe space (the Japan sales thread) to brag about how 'unhinged' the replies were by SonyGaf or whatever. It's like a whole ecosystem of bad takes feeding itself.

Nintendo's own words
"Furthermore, as you understand, domestic hardware sales volume exceeded our expectations, while overseas sales were slightly weaker than our expectations," he continued.

A 4GB (lmao) or a 6GB GPU is simply not going to cut it this late into the gen considering we're starting to see way more current gen only games. I don't think 4GB is enough for even half of the games released last year.

I dont think we'll see the final series owners switch over until the price of the hybrid high end, curated experience Xbox pc hybrid is announced, if it actually does launch. And they may just end up going full PC if budget allows.

Yeah it was never a thing. Only something internet gamers raged over. The average consumer often times doesn't even care who makes the game.

Well correct me If I'm wrong, I do remember an article saying ps5 is more powerful than 70% of all PC at home.

The biggest system sellers are not that demanding. Look at the best selling games for 2025 and 2026 they all run fine on pc.

With how it's looking likely this generation is going to be longer...and for good reason because it's barely started.
PS5 might actually outsell the PS2 🤔
unfortunately I don't think this sends the right message to Sony.

I have no idea. Someone made calculations here and GPUs on par or better than PS5 have sold multiple millions. How many exactly? I don't know.

Well not everyone has a $3000 to $4000 to spend for a powerful pc rig.

To match PS5 pro power, something (not much) above 1000 dollars is needed (it was less before RAM AI crisis...).

But of course PC was never directly competing with consoles, not in price for sure. And also not in ease of use, many console gamers are probably too tech illiterate to play on PC (no offense, many more people are like that outside of gamers).

"bbut japan" or "sony doomed?" Can't decide my reply. Which one sounds better?
*insert something about Concord here*

Also:
Sony Group Corp. on Thursday raised its net profit forecast for the year through March 2026 to 1.13 trillion yen ($7.2 billion), up from 1.05 trillion yen previously forecast, driven by its music and entertainment sector (PS included in the latter by trading monkeys).

Same games just without the edgelords.

If you look at npd sales from the last decade (or even longer). Sales of GTA, COD and multiple sports games are always in top 10 - that's for PS and Xbox (rip).

Nintendo don't have many of those games but on the other hand their exclusives sell extremely well.

This seems pretty outstanding. Isn't their estimate to sell 15M by March 2026? Or did they increase that last quarter?

In any case they'll 100% get there, which would put them at ~93M in total by that point, but should end up quite bit higher now.

It'll be the 8th system to break into the 100M-units-club next FY for sure.
