Up next for the PS5 is the PlayStation 3 with 87.40 million units sold lifetime, followed by the Nintendo Wii with 101.63 million units sold, and the PlayStation with 102.49 million units sold.

Breaking down sales by region, the PS5 has sold an estimated 30.58 million units in North America, 30.44 million units in Europe, 7.22 million units in Japan, and 17.89 million units in the rest of the world.

This compares to the Xbox 360, which sold 46.14 million units in North America, 25.08 million units in Europe, 1.66 million units in Japan, and 12.85 million units in the rest of the world.

Further breaking down PS5 Europe sales, the console has sold an estimated 5.34 million units in the UK, 5.87 million units in Germany, and 4.87 million units in France.

Hugely inflated sales numbers to boot due to rebuys for RROD (took Microsoft a long time to admit there was an actual hardware defect it was deny deny deny for a long time and many other failure modes other than rrod weren't covered.

I think there is an argument to be made that Microsoft got overly fixated on Kinect in the second half of the generation, closed a lot of internal studios and generally didn't do a good job of studio management. This is also when MS dropped their work with Japanese studios to an extent.

I think early X360 vibes until say 2009 days were indeed the best. X360 was a great console but Microsoft idiocy that led to the Xbox One disaster started in that second half of the generation

Eh no. I would take Xbox 360 over PS3 any day to this day.

Xbox 360 had Lost odyssey, blue dragon, the first 3 gears of war games, Halo 3 and 4 and Reach, dead rising, Fable 2.

PS3 of course had its moments with games like GOW3, last of us and so on. But in terms of gaming profile, that era was for the 360.

I loved the 360, I still have it and play it from time to time.

But the PS5 deserves its current success. It has the best console games on the market:

- Sony first-party games and now Microsoft first-party games

- all third-party games

In short, its success is logical in this day and age. And even more so for those who don't have a PC.

So it's no surprise that it's surpassing the 360.

Back then, we had the PS3 and 360 as home consoles. Now there's only PlayStation. And the Switch is in a league of its own.

On the other hand, I'm thrilled to have all Xbox and PlayStation games on the same console, whereas back then I had to have the 360 and PS3, and later the Wii.

Now, with a PS5 and Switch 1/2, I have everything.
However, I still have a PC. Lol

I'm not sure the 360 would have achieved those sales figures without the RRoD and Kinect.
