Puerto Rico Mayor invited to WH conference call, told she's not allowed to speak

Isn't he supposed to be going to PR today? If he does I'm sure he'll be away from the actual people of PR. I know their asses don't want to see him.

The shame and blame they try to put on the mayor for not showing up for a dog and pony show is criminal

At least she had the balls to do that. Niggas been spending the last year running to Trump in the name of starting a dialogue with a man who clearly just wants them there for a photo op.

What's the point of inviting her and not letting her speak. She has more first hand on the ground experience than anyone else on that call about the situation there.

Because they don't actually give a shit about Puerto Rico and just wanted to spite her

We should all be feminists though.

touche :)

is this like how they invite people for photo ops just to make him look like he's doing something?

Why not let her speak? She'd know better than anyone about on the ground issues and she's the literal representative for the people of her city. They appear to seriously not want to hear about any troubles or difficulties or simply evidence. Or is it punishment for daring to be the slightest bit critical? Or simple blatant misogyny? Probably all of these things, of course.

Isn't Puerto Rico part of the USA? Doesn't he care about his own citizens anymore?

In name only. Puerto Rico is a US colony. It used to be a former Spanish colony but the US acquired it after the war with Spain. People living there are not US citizens but second class citizens and many people don't care for the people living there any more than about the people on other Island nations. They also don't have the same rights as proper US citizens.

Puerto Ricans are full US Citizens. They do have the rights of any other citizen. They can't vote for president or congress while living in PR because it isn't a state and thus has no seats or electoral college votes, but if they move to any state they can vote for those positions like anyone else with no extra hassle

That's a mighty fine justification, because there are perfectly valid reasons to not give them congress seats and electoral college votes. Only states get those just because. And I don't get it either why those people don't just all pack up and buy up part of California to live in,...

How is the freaking mayor of the city in question not allowed to speak? I would have just simply told the people coordinating this to fuck off.

Not just any mayor either. She is the mayor of Puerto Rico's capital. Trump couldn't make a worse demand if he actually tried.

Try to be neutral here but it kind of sounds like she was on one of those gotomeeting webinar functions where only the presenter is allowed to speak. Not that she was shouted down by the men in the room. Could it be a technical oversight? Possibly. It's one of the lesser sins so far with this botched relief effort for sure.

What could possibly be the justification for this? Telling someone who was more directly affected than anyone in the Trump administration to shut up and listen when her people are in immediate mortal danger? Imagine if this happened to the governors of Texas and Florida after the previous two hurricanes. It sounds like Republicans are officially declaring that Puerto Ricans are second-class citizens.

This is without a doubt one of the most grotesquely blatant acts of racism and sexism they've performed since Trump took office, and that's saying something. Literally and explicitly telling her she's to be seen but not heard.

If it was just a mistake, they should have had the sense to know how this would look (then again, they can't seem to do anything right). How can you invite one of the people most directly affected by a devastating natural disaster to a meeting and not let her speak?

Meanwhile the father of the Mayor of the town of Lajas just died because help couldn't reach him in time...other similar deaths are occurring as well, news crews and reporters continue to be the first outside contact many people are receiving, and reports of suicides are surfacing...but, y'know, great news story.

Trump's touting of "low deaths...relatively speaking" as if this isn't all a continuing situation...as if the danger passed as soon as the storm passed, just shows how limited his perspective is. He deserves to be vilified for all eternity.
He genuinely deserves to be charged with crimes against humanity by now. Are there any death tolls yet?

Either it was a horribly stupid mistake (why would you not want the input on the leader of the area you are trying to help/realize she isn't offering input) or more misogyny/racism. Take your pick, smh.

It’s amazing how much of a step back this country took. So many preventable deaths are going to happen in Puerto Rico all due to The ineptitude and flat out indifference of the Trump administration.

They don't, because they can't, as most of them are too poor.

Trump is only interested in meeting with prominent minority leaders for photo-ops and faux credibility.

He has zero interest in discussing minority affairs or concerns with representatives of their respective parties. I think we have more than enough evidence of this at this point.

Trump admin is probably going to come out and say "Oops we were having technical difficulties and she was on a listening only meeting code."

Shameful.

He is such a goon. All he's talking about in PR are grades for the administration and stringing together awkward and fairly offensive sentences.

why the fuck is he talking about the figher jets? "you literally can't see them!" no, that's not the way stealth fighters work!

This presser is garbage, more to that point, he’s not even talking about Puerto Rico anymore. Now it’s over, didn’t talk about anything other than patting himself on the back. What a fuck you to Puerto Rico.

Yup. Pure garbage. Trump claims Governor doesnt "play politics" but points to his ass kissing at every opportunity to do just that.
