Talent, Knowledge of how Sony operates and experience working with them, already communicates with other Sony studios as a first party, and Sony has a ton of forgotten IPs they can reimagine as they want, if they don't want to make something new.
Sony didn't buy Insomniac because of Sunset Overdrive.
Insomniac at least has a few IP's. Spyro is not theirs but Resistance and Rachet are, right?
I understand they work together well but why buy them instead of just signing a multi year agreement or something like that?
Sony has never been about buying studios for the IPs. They usually buy small studios and grow them to the point the can create their own IPs.
How big were Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Guerrilla when Sony bought them?
For example, when they acquired Guerrilla studios I think these were some factors:
1) They are a Dutch studio
2) They had an exclusivity agreement
3) Other companies where interested in acquiring them
Sony went ahead before someone else snagged them.
Not sure if Killzone was owned by Sony before the acquisition.
I think acquisitions need to have at least IP's or present an strategic asset like having a Studio in a place where they don't have any/not enough. Bluepoint is American based, right?
I'm not bashing the purchase if they are doing so. I'm just trying to understand what the play is.
