I agree with you; Madden's online infrastructure is light years ahead of 2K. I have enjoyed the hell out of Madden on Xbox One; pleasantly surprised.
In basketball you have ten individual actors who could behave in pretty much any fashion on a given possession. Offensive plays in the NFL are all predetermined, and the defensive reactions, while slightly less predictable, also fall within a narrower range. It's just a lot harder to make basketball look faithful to the real thing, that's why NBA Live 14 looks so preposterous.
I have both current gen and next gen 2k. And I would have to say next gen is a pretty good game. There are alot more animations going on. You may not see it. I would suggest that you watch others play and you will notice. I play with the bulls and I don't really have these defense help issues your talking about . once I relaxed and stopped putting people out of position on defense I don't have any problems. The online stuff does not effect me because I prefer off line.
The reality is maybe your just not very good at the game? Lots of people think they are when in reality there not.

So, NBA 2K14 has different graphics on replay and gameplay. You learn something new everyday.
Welcome to every nba 2k release ever. Where online is broken, gameplay has promise but is still not right and we basically have to wait for the first big gameplay patch to get the experience we were promised.
The good news is that it gets better, sucks to wait out the first few weeks of disappointment, but 2k delivers (not everything) with their updates.

Of all my PS4 launch titles that I picked up: NBA 2K14, Madden 25, Battlefield 4, Killzone Shadow Fall, Madden was the only game that I was NOT impressed with.
Madden is a complete joke for an attempt as a next-gen title. EA should be REALLY ashamed of themselves.

You are absolutely right.
NBA 2K14 is beautiful but thats where the fun stops. I've owned every 2k game since the Dreamcast and this version is an insult to true fans.
Madden is pure fun. Its not the game to show off next gen by any means, but its the best Madden in years in terms of gameplay.
I fully expect 2K to right the ship, but this season they gave us a turd.

Single player is a different game from the beast that is playing against another human. The CPU offense runs its offense in a methodical way. A human brings many new variables that can cause your defense to go haywire. Play head to head regularly and see!

Lol you don't actually believe the rotations are consistently good. And as I said I'd live with a lot of the dumb shit in the game and enjoy playing it. The online options are unacceptable

I really feel that the people who say "Madden didn't change beside upres and crowd improvements" haven't played it. I DESPISED the last couple Madden but the PS4 version is VERY fun to play. You can actually run the ball now! Blockers actually block correctly (Downfield still needs work) and you can somewhat play defense. Yes, the graphics have BARELY improved, I'm not excusing that. But, the fact that it improved from a gameplay standpoint makes me more than happy with my purchase.
2K on the other hand, has been a massive disappointment. The "Story" mode... Is a joke. Horribly written, poorly voice acted dialogue that is UNSKIPPABLE is bad enough, but having to play every game and have the coach chastise me for not completing his batshit unrealistic goals? Fuck off 2K. The biggest problem I have with the game, without a doubt, is that I cannot fathom why they would tie my saves to their shitty servers. I wanted to play my association, but couldn't because the servers were down. Thanks, I thought we already had this conversation with the Xbox One 2K. WE DON'T WANT THIS SHIT. One more negative before I get to the single good point. Why can I not play with multiple people in an offline association. I can do it in Madden with my friends. 2K14... NOPE. By far the best aspect of the game is the visuals. They do look damn good, and it is a pleasure to watch the replays.
In short, I agree with the OP.

My experience has been pretty different, although I've exclusively played MyCareer since day 1. Haven't even touched the other modes, so it's very well possible that the game's problems are more obvious against human opponents. In MyCareer, defense, shot accuracy, and ball handling all feel right to me. I've never made a shot on a poor release, I rarely miss open looks on a good release, I don't turn the ball over unless I'm overdoing dribble moves in traffic, and I don't lose my defender unless I get overly eager in anticipating a shot attempt and wind up biting on nothing. I did get a little frustrated yesterday with my player's pass accuracy, though I think that might have been user error (I was definitely pushing the player stick in an extreme opposite direction of the pass, with the intention of cutting back out). Also, David West missing every look underneath the basket and not taking open midrange jumpers he's so good at sinking IRL was irritating.
I can relate to the switches in assignments, but in my experience it's rare and you can simply switch back once you/your teammate recover position.

It's not like "k bothered to fix broken stuff since 2k10/11....... The current gen version still has the same issues with spacing, help defense, running plays (some money plays, the rest is nearly useless since it's not run correctly) Picks are set in space not on the man. The list goes on and myCareer is a huge mess game-play wise since it's introduction (plays brake consistently and Teammate AI is beyond stupid). Not to talk about the state the online component gets released every year.
Fun games but this year was the first were I just wasn't able to look beyond those issues.
What I saw from next gen it looks to have the exact same issue just with better graphics and smoother animations.

Bought madden on ps3 and gamefly on ps4. Negligible difference in gameplay. It's not a different game at all. It's the same game with the same animations and a nice new coat of paint. The gameplay hasn't evolved at all. It's the same game I have played and stupidly purchased for the last 4 years. You wanna beat every defense, do a crossing or drag route. Online especially hasn't changed with people still running in goal line all the time and running the same plays over and over again because it's a money play. This hasn't changed for years. The game is a lazy effort that has become the norm for madden. This is of course my opinion.

You are missing my point. I play sports game for the competition, not the graphics. 2k cam allows the best angle to play/compete. No one ever said the graphics in replay were improved over regular play. The point was who gives a shit about James hardens beard detail when I'm in the middle of destroying smokey in an online game?

It hasn't. But neither has madden. And the game modes and the way they are played by the player are different from current gen offering a different experience than the one you get on current gen. Create a player and my gm mode are different game modes than on 360 and ps3. That's minor but it's something to show that some effort was put into it other than just a port job. The key thing I think is that neither game has changed the gameplay at all for this iteration but one decided to invest in presentation most likely because they felt their game was good already. Madden may have felt their game was good but decided to add practically nothing to presentation at all to add to the "next gen" experience. It is a carbon copy game of ps3/360 where as I think 2k put effort into making something look better and have a different set of features than the current gen. 2k needs to work on the game but at this point it's a much better effort than madden IMO.
If you play sports games for competition only then I guess you may not understand that some people want the game to look real and play well

When you buy a new console in a new generation it is because of new graphics, experiences etc. That's what gets people to move and spend money. Showing someone 2k trailers, who is a bball fan and likes games, would probably result in them having interest in the title because the graphics are great. That is what attracts dollars. Not online modes.
Now for me, yes I would like better league functionality. However I am able to see that this was a launch title and why some things are the way they are. I highly doubt it will be the same setup next year.

Well, then this is pretty biased. You are probably doing things to expose flaws in your defense. My roommate and I play constantly and I haven't experienced any of the issues you complain about.

Sorry but 2K14 next gen is the new Madden 06 this year. The OP didn't even get close to naming off all the problems with the game, and it would be hard to but let me throw my list of things in.
20+ trades in a season which turn the whole NBA into a fantasy league
Player roles are broken
VC in all the game modes except for quick matches
Scripted Mycareer which means totally ruins the mode
Superstars taking ridiculous unrealistic paycuts
Rosters can't be saved to HDD
Certain sliders keep resetting themselves
horrible teammate AI with players keep leaving their man open
the courts have a haze over them giving a unrealistic look also court colors are wrong
Rosters are old as hell and were suppose to be updated daily.
Online lag is horrible and makes the game feel sloppy while online.
MyGM and Mycareer mode crashes and freezes
players in Mycareer getting injured for 2 weeks but still don't show up years later
In mycareer undrafted rookies have starter ratings.
