Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

Today Albert posted some comparison shots from the room right before the truck area. Some additional commentary and a video walkthrough up at re4hd.com:

I never noticed they were eating dog food until I saw this... seems economical. Great work as always. It's getting very close to the end now, keep it up!

This thread inspired me to play RE4 to completion for the first time. Once the mod is fully finished I can't wait to play it again on Professional. I know I'm LTTP, but this game is perfect and this mod makes it unbelievable.

It really is a shame Capcom isn't just paying you guys some money for your work and using your textures/models for the next-gen port and a free UHD Edition update.

I'm surprised that after 2 years they haven't received a cease and desist.

Usually when remake projects like these are announced this early they get slammed with copyright claims from the rights holders and are never seen again. To the point where it's foolish to consider announcing prior to release.

I suppose this is one of the incredibly rare examples, or Capcom just doesn't care enough. They did acquire Mega Man X Street Fighter, so it's not entirely out of the question.

Either way, nice luck so far and excellent job. It looks great!

The pessimist in me thinks that Capcom is simply looking for new reasons to re-release the game, and will cut a deal with the two guys behind this project to acquire their assets for Yet Another RE4.

[Stealth edit: Or maybe that's the optimist in me.]

You need the original game to be able to use the new textures, so it's a win-win for Capcom. They don't have to spend any money on a remake and there will be a nice boost of sales once this is finished, so why should they want to shut this down?

Guys, it's not that simple. Capcom would have to verify the sources of all the textures. Even if it's clear they're all fair use textures Capcom legally wouldn't put these textures in an official release until they were positive, and it's unlikely they'll spend the time and money to do that when they can just keep re-releasing the unaltered game time after time and people will buy it.

In that case I suppose it slips under the radar.

Either way, other projects have been taken down for similar things. Shout out to Capcom for not doing so I guess. lol

Capcom was never being against mods. They do not make tools or officially support them, but they have gone out of their way to say that they won't witch hunt them either.

Other retexture-only projects have been taken down? I can't recall any. This is just a retexture mod, not a remake of the game.

I never donate to "Internet people", but once this is finished I'm going to happily donate the price of the game on Steam (around £15) to these guys. The way I see it, it is worth the price of the game alone and these efforts should definitely be rewarded by a fan of the game like myself with something other than words. I never thought I'd see the day where I'd do this.

It didn't really slip under the radar. Capcom has acknowledged its existence on the forums (isn't this or wasn't the thread Stickied on Steam?).

There's tons of RE mods too. Those are no problem, and haven't been for years. It only gets hairy when you start making a remake.

Is there any guess how intensive this mod might change RE4 graphics wise?

I finally got something that can run the PC version at decent settings and am curious how this mod will effect performance as I am really looking forward to it.

COMIDA PARA PERROS

I got a hearty chuckle when I read that. Don't really know why, I guess it's not something I expect to read in a game screenshot. Or maybe it's just the 'kill me' look on the dog...

how much do they pay per texture tho?

IMO a fair thing to do would be give at least 25 percent royalties on sales if they integrated the mod. It would be huge news too, and increase sales like crazy imo. (Think about how many times people have bought the game already, an incentive would help a ton.) That said, royalties is being unrealistic, I know.

I dont think it would happen in a million years.

Why would Capcom dare send a cease and desist to a mod that's only going to drive more sales of their product?

This isn't piracy, and this isn't copyright infringement (not really). At best, it goes against the EULA clause that claims you are forbidden from reverse-engineering, but even that is tentative (I don't think they've spoken about their process; they might be using someone else's tools).

The RE4HD Project is nothing but a boon for this game and for Capcom. I know it's characteristic to be worried about fan projects getting shut down, but there is no need to be alarmist.

Because meatheads at the company can say it endangers the sales of the PS4 and XB1 bare-bones port later this year?

I doubt it'll happen, but don't think they couldn't come up with a reason if they truly wanted to shut it down.

It's not infringing on any IP, and I can't think of a precedent for trying to C&D a texture mod. Can you give any examples where sonething like this has been shut doeb before?

But... they aren't going to be losing sales. If they thought people buying the PC version negatively impacted the sales of the XB1 and PS4 versions, and they really actually gave that much of a shit about how well those two specific versions sold, they'd take the PC version off the market.

Like, I can't even wrap my head around your logic here. No matter what happens, Capcom is ultimately going to be the one financially benefiting from this mod.

The remasters probably primarily cater to the type of people who wouldn't touch the PC versions, much less are even aware about this HD retexture project.

I'm having trouble thinking of this hypothetical prospective RE4 customer who hasn't bought the PC version on one of it's numerous sales and their tipping point between the standalone PC version and the more expensive but bundle pack console version comes down to the HD retexture project that is going to be complete who knows when.

You seem to be confused.

It isn't my logic. I'm saying it could be the logic of corporate morons. They could see people saying "I'm not picking up the PS4/XB1 version because I'm waiting on the texture mod." You seem to think I'm going "Capcom is going to do this. This texture mod is a threat, shit's going to go down!"

No, I'm saying Capcom has done stupid shit in the past and spat in the face of fans many times. I don't put anything past them. Unlikely as it may be they'll do anything, never say "Capcom won't do this bad thing."

Regarding mods and user generated content?

Steam version? I have to downgrade my video drivers to the OEM drivers. Updated drivers don't even let boot the game. It's the weirdest thing. And windows 10 forces me to update.

It's possible to disable automatic driver updates in Windows 10. It's a separate setting from regular Windows updates.

That is a bad, shitty assumption on your part, coming from a company that has never given a shit about any of the Street Fighter 4, SFxT, or Street Fighter 5 mods people have produced

From the same company that took a Mega Man fangame under their wing and posted about it on Capcom Unity

"Capcom could just be stupid!" is like going to the doctor because at any given second of the day, a freak accident could cause your head to spontaneously explode.

Suit yourself, but Capcom has done nothing in the past 4 years for me to not think they're garbage capable of making the worst decisions. Like I said, it is unlikely that Capcom will do anything to this mod, but I sure as hell wouldn't be surprised, I see it as completely possible. I no longer want to even talk about it, but the subject of legality and "what would Capcom do" keeps coming up.

Capcom has a lot of work to do before they re-earn my trust.

To better compare and appreciate the work that went into it. The Halo remasters did it and it's awesome.

I see, but the difference is so stupifyingly obvious that you don't really need to do that to appreciate the improvement. I don't want to nit pick and get too caught up in the technical details on my first playthrough with this mod... the whole point of it is to make the game more immersive and enjoyable. If you're stopping every 20 seconds to compare textures, I think you're undercutting the impact.

Nah, I agree with him. And also just to satisfy curiosity. I've, on occasion, actually stopped playing a remastered game, booted up the original and worked my way to the same spot just because I noticed something and said to myself, "Hey, was that thing even there in the original?".

I can totally see myself doing that with some of these model edits.

:)

I'm gonna spend my first playthrough gawking at a lot of textures in a way I imagine will severely impact my survivability. Doesn't matter cuz the visuals are lush.

The day this mod is finished, I will be buying the PC version. Currently I only own this game on Wii (which is one of the best versions of the game).

Are we still looking at this being a year away as on the OP, or is there a chance it can be finished this year?

OP went up in early 2014. I think his original assessment of 1-2 years was more accurate after all. I haven't been following this thread much so he might have revised this several times already since then.
