Don't forget that you can donate through the site if you guys want to support their hard work! I just dropped a lil something. Hopefully I remember to do so again soon as the project marches on.

Thanks chris!

Something to keep in mind,

if you're baking the shadows into the textures, if people ever figure out how to implement Ambient Occlusion into the game, those areas will basically be getting shadowed twice. It looks really great how it is, but to future proof might be worth saving a version without shadowing as well as a backup?

That would even be possible to mod in?

The PS3 version already looks like dogshit, no way I'd play a PS4 version. (RE4 hasnt aged well)

These guys working on this mod will get some $$ down the line from me and I will end up replaying on the PC.

Fuck Capcom. Making fans do the job they should be doing. Sad that they will make more money off RE4 PS4/XB1 than these guys working on this mod.

Someone should start some kind of campaign to get this project recognized by Capcom so they can use the assets in the new versions of RE4. I'm sure these guys would be more than willing to let their work be officially used, and this project is too good to be left as just a fan project. RE4 still has some time until release on new gen consoles.

Doubtful. They laid the groundwork with the PC release and they're probably going to port it straight from there at 1080p/60fps.

There are two areas in RE4 that require mashing a button that are basically completely broken playing at 60fps. Twice I had to quit and restart at 30 (holy shit, that was jarring). The first time was jumping from the mine cart, I think the second was during the first encounter with Krauser. I hope they fix that, but they never patched it on PC. Only found out about it through other users on the Steam forum. I'd have had to quit the game otherwise. I tried my (mechanical) keyboard after failing over and over on an Xbox One pad and it was not physically possible for me to smash it any faster.

It being Capcom I think they'd sooner try to bury the project so their sales of the basic port on PS4/XB1 isn't cannibalized. Hopefully not tho.

In what world are Capcom not doing their job? They are selling you the old game at a discounted price for a new platform. It isn't "their job" to go back and redo the whole game. They made the damn game in the first place.

I hope that they look at something like black Mesa source as inspiration for what can happen with collaboration with those who are looking to add value to their IPs.

Has any company ever officially adopted fan made texture mods?

Yep. Square with the "Revision" mod for Deus Ex. They endorsed it on their website through a blog post as well. The catch here is that the mod is exclusive to the steam GOTY edition. So, GOG and physical boxed copy owners are left out and forced to buy the steam copy ($2 usually). SE and the modders are getting flak for it, while most people are flocking to another community mod named GMDX (w/ New Vision + HDTP).

This Biohazard 4 texture mod however has no issues as it's been built on & only compatible with Bio4UHD edition, which is steam exclusive on PC. Also, the modders say that they're in touch with Capcom, who seem to be happy about this and are most probably gonna endorse it. The vanilla physical release of Biohazard 4 on PC (just like DMC3SE PC & Onimusha 3 PC) was FUBAR anyway. IIRC, one of these modders actually did a texture mod for that as well.

Capcom, or at least their Steam Community Forum presence, is aware of the project and has had positive things to say about it, but we don't know if they intend to endorse it. It'd be awesome if they did.

In fairness, they did call it the "Ultimate HD Edition," which kind of implies more than just a port.

Well, they did add 60fps mode and added some higher-res textures.

And even that they messed up. I hear there's certain issues with the game running in 60fps, as well as some stuff not running above 30 (such as sniper scopes). The HD textures they added also didn't stay true to the original textures, with rotting barns suddenly made pristine.

I do have to applaud them on their work on Resident Evil 0 HD tho, that was a job well done. Sadly it isn't perfect, with them choosing to remodel Rebecca and the pre-rendered cutscenes having some odd black-crush compression issue that the original release didn't.

I'd love if a company actually cared about their games as much as fans like Cris and Albert do. I realize they're a business and it makes more sense to release something with little work that you know will sell regardless but, it's frustrating.

Have we ever since a dev do something like that for consoles?
Maybe not consoles, but the Black Mesa project got the greenlight by Valve and the work being done for RE4 here is very impressive. I think something must be done to get Capcom to notice it, perhaps the higher ups are not aware. It would be interesting to get their take on the improvements shown here and question them about a possible implementation.

That's pretty much confirmation that the suits are in no way of hindering your path. First win. This isn't a fanmade remake running on UE4. You're literally, remaking their own game and earning them money for it. There will be a significant boost in numbers if they PR this into oblivion, through a blog post or social media spam.

Relax and take your own time for this project's fruition, meticulously crafting it, as you guys have been doing till now. That said, everytime I enter this thread because of a bump, I immediately head over to your website's progress summary section before reading any of the new comments here. It's like every Biohazard player having OCD & scrolling through their item box to check how much magnum/bazooka ammo / brown herb mix's / aid sprays they have for the next half hour, drooling at the gun models, etc. before going to the final boss. Same way, I'd be missing your "formerly in progress" and "in progress" status updates, when the entire project's over, after I D/L it. :(

To be fair, the internal game's logic was bound to 30fps, hence when the UHD version was first released you could see Ganados act strangely, thrown objects stopping mid-air or hens laying tons of eggs when you played the game in 60fps. So given the almost impossible task that the team responsible for the port was assigned to, the final result is rather OK.

From what I've read they patched a lot of those issues out (I know one of them was Luis handing you ammo twice as frequently in the cabin seige). I haven't played the UHD Edition yet even though I've owned it for a while because I've been holding off for this mod, so I can't say for sure what's still broken and what isn't.

One thing I have noticed is that the colors are way off from the Wii/GC version of the game. This is another thing Capcom addressed with a patch; you can change the filters in the game and one of them is pretty close to the game's original appearance. The default filter is much different.

See I think there is a difference from endorsing or approving a mod and officially incorporating the assets into the base game. The latter just seems fraught with peril because in some sense it is being monetized. Unless the texture modders form their own company with appropriate liability insurance it just doesn't seem likely that a publisher would be willing to officially acquire those assets.

Endorsing it is a whole different story. In the case of RE4 they could just add Steam Workshop support and then highlight the texture mod in a blog post or something. That makes it super plug and play but obviously doesn't help anyone out on the console end.

I'm pretty sure that's similar to what happened with KOTOR 2. Too many potentially legal hassles to officially adopt the Content Restoration Mod but put in Steam Workshop support and you have the next best thing.

The only remaining issue that stands out in the current PC port is the 30 fps rifle reload animation. Everything else is fantastic. I can't speak to things like the ammo count stuff (I've never gotten that into behind the scenes of the game) but I've played literally every single incarnation of RE4 except the iOS port and I think the new PC version is superb.

crisdecuba, this is an oddly specific request, but...

Have you updated the texture for the puddle that's in 2-1, just past the waterfall you turn off, at the mouth of the cave tunnel leading to the emblem you use to open the church?

Back in the day, it was like the most amazing puddle ever. Just the right amount of mud congealing around the outer extremities, with a certain depth to it, and coalescing shades of green and brown, making the water look truly soiled.

I'm interested to see how you've updated it.

And no, this isn't a joke!

Never-ending amazement provided by this thread. I can't wait. I would seriously love to buy this pack included as some kind of DLC for the PS4 version, but that is in the hands of Capcom, and it'd be best not to reach out to them on this unfortunately... Just a possibility of them being crappy about it means that it's good to be cautious about this.

Yup. Not sure if it'll live up to your first experience with it (hard to compete with that) but hopefully it'll still be a positive reaction. :) I'd prefer not to go back to get screenshots of past rooms for specific requests (mainly because of the amount of time it would take to fulfill those requests each time they come in :-/ ), but if you download the village release from our site, you can see for yourself. Hope that helps!

I'm doing one of my biannual replays of RE4 and wanted to see if this is still in development, how much is there to go?

Amazing work BTW, you guys are incredible.

I refuse to play this game again until this project is complete.
Playing it again with this project will be GODLY!

Cris and Albert are doing such amazing work.
I love it!
