Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

Welcome to GAF Albert!

wesker-2.png

Oh my goodness. That's horrifying and adorable.

I'm speechless in front of comments like these haha

I never thought this project would become that big. We are really happy so many people is following us ... even when it's taking so much time to be completed!

I'd like to thank Son of Pesia (member in the Resident Evil modding forums) for his help with all the tools he is developing (they are the key to make possible all the 3D edits).

We have photoshop and some 3D skills but we couldn't do anything without the previous hard work of the coders behind all the convert/import/export/pack/repack tools we are using. So, many thanks to all of them, too!!

Don't worry! The entire project is picky :)

That's because the model was much more "spiky" and the vertices were originally unwelded. Both things generate harder shadows.

I can try to get again more contrasted shadows by unwelding some vertices.

Weld/unwelding vertices in the 3D editor is a nice trick we learned during this project and it makes a big difference sometimes!

Sorry if I wrote in a weird way sometimes. English is not my native language :P

Every time I come in this thread knowing I will be amazed but it still never prepares me...

Fuck. Looking good.

The glass on the clock I noticed as well... amazing. Just amazing.

This is getting really far into the game now, right? After this, there's just the long chapter with the Krauser fights and "It," which isn't as heavily detailed as most of the game, and then the helicopter finale, which is also kind of a sparser outdoor type area. Hopefully it should move pretty fast from here.

I cannot recall there ever being a mod that was this entertaining whilst in production.

Watching you find the textures in real life over and over again, has been fantastic

Thanks again for all this work.

WESKARRRRRRR - I mean hi Albert!

^The floor photography was well worth it, looks perfect. I agree that that particular room was always a highlight, it's nice to see that it's been enhanced so well. I really like how much clearer the shadowplay on the ground is now.

clooney_chuckle.gif

Yeah I always thought that room was interesting. An gothic-decorated lobby in a vast industrial zone. Those shadows from the cages might have played a part in it standing out

While it's no REmake, I don't think RE4 gets enough credit for its environmental design and art

Yes, and he's been doing that for like almost everything.

Albert, you're a madman and I love you.

Wait how in the fuck does he know where all this stuff came from oh my god

EDIT: Just followed his Twitter what in the world

Seriously Capcom just give this man like $100,000 and sell this.

Thank you everyone for your comments :D

I was able to find some of the original textures because Capcom came to Europe in 2000 (aprox.) and one of the places they visited was my city, Barcelona.

Not just in RE4, you can find textures from their trip to Spain and Wales in REmake, Devil May Cry and Haunting Gruond games. Even in REvelations 2 there are still some remaining textures from those pictures they took so may years ago.

And... how I was able to found them? Well... this is hard to explain.

I've been working on this game's textures since the first PC port was released.
I recognized by chance one door (or window, or wall... I can't remember) while searching in Google for good resolution pictures to use as a replacement in the game. (by that time I was looking for similar textures, not the same). And then I saw something and I thought: "hey, that door... is almost identical to the one in the game... no wait... it's the same door!!"
Then I pulled the thread and I found some other textures in the Internet in the same location/building.

It was a city in Spain. And the architectonical style of lots of textures used in the game looked familiar to me. So, I guessed lots of them should come from Spain, too.

As time went by, I was able to locate most of the locations Capcom visited during their trip (in Spain and in UK) I went to those cities and I took pictures of the same things.

And yes, I took several pictures and then I put together all the pieces :)

That's amazing, great job!!!

Did...did he actually find that exact same floor, take a pic and turn that into a new texture?

Dude, first of all thank you for the dedication and hard work of one of my all time favorite games. Also, welcome

Second of all, if I was a millionaire I would seriously give you guys a big donation for your efforts.
unfortunately I'm broke as a joke :(

And lastly, Capcom should A) be ashamed B) pay or hire you

That is all.

The clock. The god damn clock. When this is out and I finally play it, I'll spend 20 minutes just staring at it. Honestly though, you guys could do this professionally, your project is putting ton of remasters to shame and then some.

Is there any reason this couldnt get an official release? Would actually pick up the PS4 version if that was the case.

Yes: Capcom's lazyness. Wait for the inevitable PS5 port in case they might change their mind.

More seriously: It's a fanmod... It's really really rare that publishers use mods and sell them, even by paying the modders. So, the odds are pretty much tiny.

I would seriously watch a documentary about someone going to the actual locations to remake the assets of a video game (and a super famous and critically acclaimed one at that) as authentically as possible.

I can't express how much I wish some friend had followed you with a camera. The story itself is inherently docu material.

I actually do hope Cris and Albert try to document this a little beyond just the twitter pictures. It's really interesting to see the process.

I actually wanted to do something like this at the end of the project XD

Wow seriously? That is some crazy dedication for a free mod. Kudos man.

Just out of curiosity are you a texture artist professionally or is this just a hobby?

It's a hobby. I'm layout artist for a scientific magazine. So, I'm used to Photoshop :)
