Retronauts Podcast Thread

I don't have the time stamps, but they're very Jeremy Parish flavored advertisements. I liked the Casper one.

That was the goal. Now to wait and see if the advertisers like them as well, or if we get kicked out of the network by week's end.

Shane is always so hyped up; bringing back that old school 1Up podcast energy. I feel like Shane's not-so-secret true motive whenever he comes on is to discredit Bob's gamer cred in some way.

Shane's a crusty Gen-X'er while I'm merely an aging Millennial so we clearly have different priorities.

I really don't like Shane. His whole deal on any Retronauts he's ever been on is to prove how much more of a fan he is than anyone else. I haven't listened to this one yet so maybe I shouldn't post this, but past experiences have my finger hovering over the play button.

I have been really digging the regular episodes. Bob's episodes are kind of ending up like "Laser Time featuring Retronauts", but that's cool because I love Laser Time. Retronauts East is going to take me a little time to warm up to it. I just need to get to 'know' Ben and Benj.

Damn it, I didn't take the day off for Midwest Gaming Classic on Saturday because I figured they wouldn't be back after hearing Jeremy complain about it in the past (recording in a restaurant)

Now I work on Saturday during the panel. At least I'll get to be there Sunday. Bob, if you're there on Sunday, I'm gonna hunt you down for an autograph to match my Parish from last year. Yes, I'm that kind of podcast fan.

I'll be there Sunday, but good luck finding me since I'll be donning several disguises throughout the convention in order to avoid people trying to debate me.

He dropped that pretty quickly in this episode, even though he comes out the gate sounding like he's going to raise some hell.

"I'm a bigger fan than you" has been Shane's schtick since the classic 1Up podcast days. I used to feel similarly to you, but somehow now I just find it charming. Probably because people called him out on it a few times.

I was actually thinking after the first one "oh thank god these are just normal advertisements and I don't have to listen to three consecutive minutes of Jeremy and Bob pretending to have used Squarespace" so I hope they don't go too far off the map later on!

At least based on the first half of the ep Shane's contributions are spot-on and much more to do with pointing out interesting things about the games than showing off particularly. It's more like the VALIS episode and less like, IDK, some randomly selected 1UP-era podcast with Shane on it.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels this way. I usually can't deal with that weird aggro energy, but this episode was totally fine and Shane does know his stuff.

I also really love Retronauts East and West. They're a nice juxtaposition to each other. West is funnier (especially if it has the Laser Time folks on it) and East is more chill but technical. Getting new Retronauts content every week is excellent.

Good episode on Batman. Jon Ritman was the developer of the original 1986 Batman game, he had nothing to do with the 1988 game sadly, although that would have meant another Isometric adventure if he had been haha.

Isometric games were Ritmam's thing, his best game being Head Over Heels. He was the designer of Game Boy game Monster Max which again is an isometric adventure, good game too with a cracking David Wise soundtrack.

The two NES Batman games by Sunsoft are still my favourite games Arkham series aside, I do love the Brave and the Bold on DS. Looks awful next to the Wii version but the gameplay is much better.

Adventures of Batman and Robin is quite different on Mega Drive compared to the SNES. SNES is better to play but Jesper Kyd's score on Mega Drive is better. The Mega CD version is garbage but it does have some exclusive Animated series footage.

Return of the Joker on Game Boy is a different game to the NES one, it's quite short, you can finish it in less than an hour. It plays a lot like a Ninja Gaiden style game.

15 minutes in to the Castlevania Retronauts and I had to tap out. It's like Shane thinks he's invited to brag about his experiences surrounding Castlevania rather than the games themselves."I got to do this and I got to go to Japan and do that and by the way did you know there was a 32X version?" God, I just can't stand that guy.

I had the complete opposite reaction. I don't come to Retronauts for a mundane, academic discussion about games; personal experiences, and hearing about the context in which the hosts played these games, is what makes this podcast special.

It's the difference between listening to a podcast about 1950's New York City which runs down stats on population density and employment rate, and one where the hosts can give use a first hand account of what their lives were like living there at the time.

I also don't see it as "bragging". Sincere enthusiasm is always welcome in my book.

You can be sincere and enthusiastic and funny without presenting yourself with some weirdly aggressive "I am the real authority here" schtick. Jeremy and Bob manage to do it every week without using Shane's playbook.

Shane has been podcast poison to me for, what, a decade now? I'm sure he is a fine fellow personally and knows his stuff, just don't care to listen to his ESPN talk show host persona he frequently adopts. Obviously lots of people dig that; it's just a little too hyper for my taste.

Couldn't disagree more about Shane. Glad to have him back.

At this point, I have nostalgia about certain people talking about nostalgia, admittedly. I have nostalgia about people freaking out about Shane, honestly, call him a shameless fanboy and things for what I always perceived as enthusiasm. Your griping about his appearance only completes the nostalgic Shane experience for me. Ahhhhhh.....

I thought the episode was a little kind towards Harmony, though my biggest gripe with it (the absolutely awful end game item hunt) wouldn't be something you'd encounter unless you actually set out to beat it in a replay.

That said, it got me to replay Circle, and I think I am done defending it. It's kinda garbage once you remove it from the context of being a notable gba launch title.

I couldn't stand Shane when he was on multiple podcasts a week.

However since he's left the press he's been an absolute joy whenever he pops up on a podcast.

Yeah, Shane episodes are far and away my favorite ones. He's GREAT in small does- he's the friend that you can hang out with once or twice a year

East definitely has that "shooting the shit on a porch with a whiskey" vibe going for it.

Being an occasional guest rather than a regular host is ideal for Shane since the worst parts of his podcast personality (know-it-all vibe and loud arguing) come to the fore when he's on a panel for something he doesn't particularly care about, while the best parts (huge enthusiasm, a deep well of knowledge) are perfect for when he's invited on to talk about something specific he cares about (like, again, Castlevania or Valis.)

I think I would appreciate Circle of the Moon more if its soundtrack didn't use such lame generic MIDI-esque instruments in playing the greatest musical hits of the series.

Swordquest episode was very informative. Loved it.

East is coming into its own.

Small hickup in the beginning though. There was like 8 seconds of dead air between the intro and Jeremy saying hi everyone.

Really enjoyed the Swordquest micro. I discovered the crazy story about that game from the Angry Video Game Nerd episode on it, and it's really cool to see it's getting a comic!

I also -really- want to hear the pitch for the Pong comic

For the longest time I just assumed it was him, lol.

Shane is Liquid Swords

The "Direct Download" link from the main site for Episode 94 doesn't work, btw.
I get directed to a blank 'downloadsecurity' file page

Also, I gotta reiterate my sentiment that it's really strange that there's no button on the website that displays a list of only blog posts associated with episodes. For a website dedicated to a podcast, the actual links to the audio can be crazily hard to find and requires an inconvenient amount of scrolling. A newcomer to the site might even miss the crucial fact that Retronauts is primarily a podcast as opposed to a news blog.

http://www.glixel.com/ Glixel has a nice button right at the top banner that makes it really easy to find the podcasts! Wink wink nudge nudge. Keep 'em coming!

Weirdly I did not quite gel with Symphony in its time. It felt too easy for a Castlevania (though I do love Super IV, which isn't terribly hard since the multi-directional whip kind of breaks the design) & the non-whip weapons in SotN didn't quite feel right to me. It wasn't until much later that I clicked with the Metroidvanias. Aria is probably my current favourite among them, though I didn't play the last couple on DS. I can now appreciate how much care was put into Symphony and what a well-designed game it is though.

But Rondo is such a perfectly crafted game, every element feels so well placed and deliberate, like each new obstacle is a puzzle. And the remake's animation is so cool, just walking around feels amazing. The cinemas are less corny too. I really, really like it. (It also includes the original game + Symphony for whatever reason).

Co-signed. There are so many times I've visited the website and spent a bunch of time hunting for the podcast tab only to realize after a while that there isn't one.

We have a massively improved website in the works. Only so much you can do with a WP blog.

Awesome! Happy to hear.

You should do a Worldwide Retronauts launch party. Retronauts Day, where everyone around the world plays a classic game and tweets/snaps/hashtags™ their nostalgia. #RetronautsDay, (or something snappier?). We could probably get it mentioned on Good Morning America or at the very least, Good Afternoon, Canada.

I wonder what the ratio of people who have played the 8 bit Ghostbusters games vs have just seen the AVGN videos.

I'm guessing more people have just seen the AVGN videos.

C-64 version here. Hit spacebar to "GHOSTBUSTERS!!"

Ugh, any mention of the Genesis and it's, "mmmmeggg, nghhh, robot farts"

Jeremey, you need to get people who have played more than SNES/NES games on your East podcast.

No time to listen to a retro podcast where some people have only played Sega games on a 10 year old version of a shitty emulator.

I'll avoid any east podcasts, because they're just not as good as west. Not even close.

lol jeremy had visions of your stupid post the second benj made the genesis joke

..relax

the retronauts east stuff is great.

I appreciate your efforts, Jeremy, and I heard what you said in the podcast, but it still needs to be said. What good is a retro podcast if we still have to deal with console-warrior stuff instead of appreciating the splendour of all the classics, regardless of the system?

but its like 10 seconds out of the entire podcast. its not like they spend any actual time talking about it. benj made a one off comment/joke(i didnt even think it was funny, but who cares?), jeremy scoffed at him, and they moved on

its not a big deal

See, I liked that. It's funny because it's true. It really didn't take anything away from the episode.

Shane was insufferable on the Castlevania episode though.

Now I wish the SwordQuest episode was closer to the comic's release because I'm dying to read it.

Enough snark to make me turn it off. Got other podcasts in my queue.

I admire Shane's knowledge and passion. He just loves games in spite of the system. Admittedly, his problem is that he has a very "cred"-centric point of view. On one hand, I think he sees some game fans as poseurs if they came late to a party (which is very wrong), but on the other, he is possibly trying to maintain a contextual discussion about the game at the time of it's release. I totally get your complaint though.
