Reviews: Monster Hunter Generations

I need to decide what weapon I'm going to try and main this time around. In 4U on one save alone I went from Hammer/CB->GunLance->Lance/S&S.

Weapon styles are easy to change, right? I was enjoying the Aerial Gunlance in the demo

Im not really into pre-ordering games until the review are out but i had this one pre-ordered for a month cant wait to play it.

I really liked the charge blade in 4, i wonder if you can do the aerial style with that weapon? Probally to heavy im guessing.

Every weapon can use every style. The only things exclusive to weapons are the hunter arts.

I have a new 3DS and I kinda noticed it looked uglier than 4U which had graphical enhancements for the system... Kinda disappointing in that regard but I don't really care at the same time.

So tempted to stay SnS but man I need to spread my wings and learn other styles. It's the same thing with fighting games for me. I can be really good with one character but I suck at everything else.

Haven't ever played or even seen a MH game. Is it basically "Dark Souls boss runs" the game?
Kind of, but it ignores the beefy gear crafting / item gathering / progression system that makes the series super deep and causes people to obsess over it. The demo on the eshop shouldn't be considered a vertical slice of gameplay at all.

They share common DNA but they're pretty different games.

I liken MH more to a sport than a boss fight. You prepare, you strategize, then shit goes wrong and you ad-lib. It's rarely "I am going to keep trying this until it breaks my way." It's more "Oh, fuck, let me rethink this completely."

Yep. Trying to beat G Rank Teostra in 4U was a much different experience from trying to beat Orphan of Kos in Bloodborne. Both required me to learn the boss, but one was a constant series of me experiementing to see what works over and over while the other was me preparing for several long bouts beforehand and wondering "okay, what should I do this time to actually beat him?"

A large part of Monster Hunter is in your mindset and preparation. The fights can take a very long time, so you have to be patient and prepared. No frantically spamming the dodge hoping to god you get lucky, because the fights are just too long.

I am going to be travelling at my family's cabin on Friday and there isn't great internet there.

If I buy the cart then later buy the eshop version would my save transfer or would I need to start afresh?

I've probably only put a combined 20 something hours into MH3 and 4U but I really like what I've played of the series so far and can't wait to jump into Generations on Friday. Glad to see its reviewing well.

There is a 3ds app tool that Nintendo made available for free on the eShop that lets you transfer cart saves to the digital version. Should work fine for MH:G, but be aware that once you transfer the save using the tool, the cartridge will be completely wiped and restored to its original state, so just keep in mind it is a one-way transfer!

Imagine fighting Kalameet with no lock-on and the Dragon's Tooth. Now a whole game like that.

Jokes aside the main similarities it has to Souls are in things like stamina management, the importance of weapon movesets, patience over combo memorizaton, learning enemies. Basically the pace of the combat rather than the feel of it. The flow of the game itself is very very different.

MH Generations saves to the SD card(for both digital and retail) not the cart so thats not even necessary iirc

Honestly, it is to a small extent just a boss rush with Dark Souls style.

Its also quite separate on a bunch of areas, such as farming, hunting in groups, bunch of hunting tools, weapon variety and items galore. It does require plenty of time commitment. I just started MH4 a few weeks ago to prepare for MHG after not playing a MH game since 2 on PS2. Really glad what I saw in MH4, and it seems from the demo that MHG makes it better in a bunch of ways (and friendlier to newcomers).

The lack of a G-Rank makes me sad. For those who've been playing MHX, how does the progression feel? Does it still feel like a steady climb with substantial milestones?

Is the online HR system in place where only the person who chooses the urgent gets credit? Worst part of online play. You go in, help others and they immediately drop when it's your turn to post :(

Would this be a good entry point for someone who hasn't played a MH game before? I'd like to try it after I play through 7th Dragon.

After the absurd amount of hours I got in MH3U, I only got around 100 hours in MH4U which was primarily spend on beating the singleplayer, didn't even make it to the G-rank part on the guild side. I don't know if it was because I fell out of touch with MH or because I didn't have my regular crew to play it with like I did on 3. Kinda worried I'm gonna buy this and never actually gonna play. I was planning on playing MH4U in anticipation for this as well, but I never could put myself to playing it either. Gonna read some of these reviews to get my hype back up, I really shouldn't be so indifferent towards one of my favorite gaming series.

I think of Monster Hunter as the demonspawn child of Diablo and Punch Out!

Hmm. That's not that bad of a description. It's better then comparing the series to Dark Souls I think. On that front I think it's just the challenging aspect but I find DS to be not designed well a lot of the time. MH is built around it's enemy encounters and boss monsters. So as a result it's far more fair when it comes to it's challenge. That includes the locations where the fighting takes place. DS's combat matches everything but the boss encounters I feel. You can make it work but you an make any control setup work. It's why I don't really like comparing the two series, especially in helping someone decide if they'll like one or the other.

So what replaces G rank this go around? Super hyped and want to be informed for once, was totally in the dark for 4U
