RTX 4090 review thread

Didi you not see the part about just upping resolutions and framerates on console ports, It is not the same as pushing new graphics technology, You know, like PC games used to do.

Right now its a 4090s destiny to do nothing more adventurous than playing PS5 games at 8K/60fps.

If that floats your boat, fine.

Me?...Spending $2000 to do that is not a sensible way to go.
How are the N64 reflections on Spiderman games doing?

yeah bleeding edge tech for sure but for what? to run games designed for PS5/X1 at higher rez and fps... forgive me but sinking near £2k for a card that simply runs games faster and cleaner is insane in my book, but whatever floats yer boat.. show me your NDog level Devs pushing a 4090 and i may bite, Star Citizen looks good but lets face it, by the time it comes out you'll need a 6090 to run it
Theres only one game I can think of that has RTGI on console.
That alone is worth the price of admission for an RTX card.
RTGI is absolutely spectacular, even SSRTGI is worth it.
Add in actually utilizing a 2160p120 Panel to its fullest and that sounds like a good deal to me.
 
you're right. But to some paying for graphics card over 2k euros is mind blowing, even though hobbies like fishing, hunting or auto/moto sports cost much more.
I'd say it is mind blowing, even though I too have more expensive hobbies.
It's a combination of greedy Nvidia, component supply issues, the euro tanking and inflation. Bad timing to upgrade tbh. But we can't do much about it, besides maybe waiting and hoping prices will go down if you can do that.
I just hope AMD can be competitive, no matter if you like them or not it's good for the industry.
 
Show me a single, PC exclusive game being developed right now with the same budget, resources and talent behind it along the lines of Ratchet, GoW, Horizon, Spider-Man or any other of half a dozen PS5/Xbox titles you care to name currently being worked on, pushing the graphical boundaries in the same way as Doom 3 or Crysis did, back when PC games were the proving ground for graphics tech and not possible on consoles, until one or two generations in the future.

There isn't a single game today being developed exclusively for PC that will in any way make full use of a 3090, never mind a 4090, and make PS5 Xbox owners wish they were PC gamers.

And just upping the resolution & framerates on console ports, until it buckles, is not the same thing at all.

With some case modification I managed to squeeze in the Gigabyte Gaming OC with NO room left front to back. I have a Corsair 200t iCue RGB.

Next build is going to have a full tower lol

I had to bend the front and back side panels and bend them back for the card to nudge in. This was the most DIY thing I've had to do.

First bench I compared was p3D Mark Port Royale

Upped my scores a little with an OC.

Anyone OC their 4090 yet?

Got +190 core +1500 mem so far. Scores are about what I'd expect with the 5900x.
 
RT, DLSS, FSR 2.0, XeSS are some of the most advanced techs today.
PC is leading, by a huge margin on all of them.

The only tech consoles are leading is in SSD accesses.
Isn't direct storage basically the same thing? In a year from now console are not gonna have that advantage anymore.

The creation and adoption of Direct Storage has been so slow, it's going to take a part of a decade to become standard on PC.
And Microsoft is slacking off so much, not even one of their games has support for it.

And i'm sure that at least another big game close to release use it.

I mean, it's not like ps5 use his ssd speed on every game, mostly the opposite.

Only some first party sony game use it for instant loading and only ratchet for something level design related, after 2 years...

It will, in 2023. If it's not delayed again.
But that is only one game.
I don't even know of other games that are planned to use DS.

What i was trying to say is that instant loading is pretty much a thing on pc aswell and console didn't really used their ssd dominance for what cerny promised except the gimmick in ratchet.

I can't remember the other game that use direct storage unfortunately.

Yes, speeds are decent on the PC.
But they should be much better. We have SSDs with 14GB/s, but loading games, they act just a tad better than a Sata SSD with 0.5 GB/s speeds.

And let's remember it's not just about loading speeds. DS also reduces CPU usage up to 40%.
For a lot of people with CPUs that are not top of the line, is a huge upgrade.

And then there is the biggest advantage. An improvement to stuttering when streaming assets.

What is a good cpu to play at 4k60 for the next 5 years??

Do i need the latest i7 for "just" 4k60?

Is a 12600k enough? Or you think i can go even lower?

(P.s. i have no problem disabling rtx if it's heavy on the cpu)

For 4K the bottleneck will be mostly on the CPU side. Unless you use an RTX 4090.
Games continue to use 6C12T, for the most part. So a 12600K is enough. If you match clock speeds with a 12900K, it will match it in almost every game.

But 5 years is a long time. And with AMD and Intel competing closely, IPC is bound to continue to increase significantly with each generation.
Another thing to consider is that DDR5 speeds are bound to increase a lot in the coming years, just like it did in all previous DDR generations.
But the memory controller of a 12th gen CPU won't be able to take advantage of those speeds.
So a 12600K in 5 years will be somewhat slow.

Remember that when AMD release Bulldozer, and it failed miserably, Intel went into low gear.
Improvements over each generation was very low. Sometimes inexistent.
So a CPU would last much longer, as devs had to aim low to hardware advancements in the CPU space.
Only after Zen, did Intel start to make real improvements.

On the other hand, consoles are using a Zen2 CPU. And consoles are the common minimum denominator, so many games will target this.

When i make a new build from scratch i usually only change the gpu every 2-3 years, i don't wanna change cpu before at least 4-5 years.

I thought that the most powerfull cpu was only needed for way higher framerates (at 4k) and heavy rtx usage, i thought the other graphical settings were mostly gpu side.

Oh ok, i thought intel series 13 was still far away and i kinda want to finish the build before the new year start.

But if they are already out i have no problem on picking the new one, i'm not gonna cheap out on anything this time.

What is a good price for a 13600k??

Lowest price is like 370 euros so 363 dollars but the site is a bit shady.

Edit: forget it, the price was without iva tax.

The MSRP should be 285US$. But these are prices without taxes.
And the Euro has lost some value compared to the dollar, so prices in Europe have gone up.
Also, do you need the integrated IGP. If not, o for the 13600KF. It's 20-30 euros cheaper.

Depending on price on your region, 12600Ks or 13600ks.
The extra e-cores won't do anything for gaming. The extra L2 cache will do a bit.
But if the price diference is high, just go for the 12th gen.

Definitely an i5, you wont need or ever really utilize the extra cores on the i7, and def wont need an i9.
Question is pricing, and how soon you want to actually build your system.

I champion the 12400 because of bang for buck, but as you want to keep this system for a while, you might want the higher general perf of the 126K.
126KF or 136KF.....if Intel does an official price drop on 12th gen the 126KF is a no brainer, if not might as well get that boost in performance the 136KF brings to the table.
The 13400 is actually built on the same die as the 12600K, it might be priced really well but we have no idea when its coming out....it will likely match a 12600K 100% of the time, and be near 100 dollars cheaper.
Remember that the 13th gen is basically a refresh of the 12th gen, its not a true new generation, so gaming performance is relatively similar.

Also 13th gen comes with better/higher Memory compatibility, so when DDR5 really starts getting utilized that perf boost might start to add up.

I really don't have a max budget, i 'm fully ready to not walk straight for 6 months after it's all set and done.

Yeah get the 136K paired with a decent DDR5 board and you are sorted for 5 years easy work.
 
Call me crazy but if you want 4k and gaming only , buy the cheapest motherboard and cheapest i5 . And throw these mf away every 3 years . Repeat .

It's pretty much what I have. It's a beast. And the 4090 is very quiet, my watercooling is making more noise lol.

my generic 3090 (HP OEM) went for 771$ on ebay should take the sting a little bit off building my new z790/raptor/ddr5 rig

New drivers 526.98 fixes that DLSS frame generation support for VSync and G-sync. Apparently the latency is virtually gone.

MS released DS1.1 SDK, for PC, a few days ago.
Intel, AMD and nvidia released drivers for devs to use developing their games.
Intel and nvidia released these drivers with support for DS1.1 for everyone.
AMD released only for devs.
The first game to support DS is supposed to be Forspoken, to be released 2 months from now. But it might just use DS1.0
