Rumor: Is Retro Studio teasing their presence at E3?

Did the Startropics rumor ever have any merit at all? I remember hearing about it last year, but there weren't any copyright things found or anything?

Gonna be a new Metroid with a digging mechanism...

:(

It'll be DKCR3.*

Only reason I'm looking forward to E3 is for the faint possibility of a Metroid announcement.

*DKCTF was amazing...but would prefer them to devote their talents elsewhere.

I want another Hunters so bad...

me too. i played the crap out of that game. that game still had more online features than most nintendo games to this day. id kill for a wiiu version

honestly though, its probably a metroid dlc for shovel knight being announced.

Metroid X Dig Dug?

But seriously, I'm excited that they might show something new, really hoping for Metroid. Just please, no Donkey Kong.

I don't think most people realize that the StarTropics rumor started on GAF.

GAF --> internet --> GAF

Pretty much. It was definitely a joke some folks took too far, including one poster who account suicided playing insider over something that had no chance of happening for real.

But 3D DK? that's a whole different story, I'd love to see how Retro would tackle this. For all the complaints about too many Nintendo platformers the realm of 3D is still very much occupied by Mario alone with his games getting closer to the 2D formula as they continue and across the other platforms 3D platformers are still heavily missed.
There's an opportunity here for Retro to fill a void that Mario left open, Retro are so good at world building that a more open DK game in 3D could be really interesting.
Funnily enough when it comes to Metroid I feel that going 2D would actually end up more fresh than revisiting the Prime formula for a fourth time, they got weaker as they progressed and I can't shake the idea that a Prime 4 would just be a safe entry. A 2D Metroid would be like the ultimate conclusion of all Retro picked up from the Prime and Returns games.

I also feel the next logical step for Retro is to make a 2D Metroid game. Imagine something like Tropical Freeze, where the environment and gameplay are telling the story as you progress, with something interesting happening every moment. But only instead of levels, it's just one huge and incredibly intricate and detailed world. It'd be a good change of pace for them after being on Donkey Kong for a long time, but they'd also feel comfortable and confident in their 2D game construction.

I would also be THRILLED to get a 3D Donkey Kong. I love what Retro has done for the series, and to see a brand new game world/structure that they haven't yet tried would be exciting. And as you said, bigger budget 3D platformers are non existent outside of Mario basically.

Yeah, I think a 3d DK is long overdue. It's been over 15 years since DK64 released. I'm actually surprised they didn't make another one. DK64 sold really well =/

Nintendo didn't know what to do with Donkey Kong during the GCN era due to the Rare buyout. And now that the franchise is finally back on track, people are complaining about "too much DK". Laughable.

We got fucking Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and 3 fucking Donkey Konga games in the GCN era, and only two Metroid Primes. Meanwhile we've already had two fucking Donkey Kongs since the Wii generation! To compare, we've only had two Metroid games since, both on Wii. Enough DK, back to Metroid.

:p

I want a new IP D:

Yeah. Gamers can be so weird sometimes. When they want something, they'll complain that they don't have it. But when they finally do get it, they complain that they have too much of it. :P

I don't think they'll be working on Donkey Kong.
But if Nintendo has them be their developer for Star Fox and there's not a lot of games announced this year? Yeah, we're gonna have that thread again.
I don't think it's too unrealistic for Retro to be the co-developer on Star Fox U, though I'd probably prefer Platinum just since they've already shown an interest in the IP.

Either way, would people really get that upset if it's Star Fox, considering how that series has (arguably) been dead even longer than Metroid and isn't another platformer?

"Metroid Prime Hunters 2, the game you've all been waiting for! That's your Metroid game for the next 5 years, so enjoy it!"

They actually wants Retro to try something aside Nintendo's own IPs, which is a valid request. DK can be handled by different studios, despite Retro's efforts were amazing.

For me, it's less about there being "too much DK" and more that Nintendo is already flooded with platformers, and Retro is stuck on DK (even though they did an incredible job bringing the series back). Now I'll admit that I'm a little hypocritical with the latter, because I had no problems with Retro being stuck on Metroid for a trilogy. At least I'll admit that though.

Yeah, I agree. Retro should definitely make something new. They've been working on Nintendo IPs ever since the beginning of their existence, except for the projects that were cancelled before Metroid Prime 1 was made. It would be interesting to see what they can come up with.

The problem with metroid though that so many prople overlook and why Nintendo made them make DKCR before is that the guys that made Prime are now at Armature. These people now probably dont know where to start or incapable of developing a Metroid Prime.

Actually, I believe more people are at Bluepoint than Armature. You must be concerned about the fact that they no longer have the director, art director, and technology director of the Prime games at Retro. But remember, Armature has made an ok Batman game and a couple of ports, while Retro has made two of the best platformers of all time. And besides, there is plenty of talent there from the Prime games.

Hunters was great... In multiplayer. The problem was that most Metroid fans wanted a great single player experience, like a portable Prime, but Hunters' was designed as an afterthought and was basically just another fps.

But honestly? If Retro developed a Hunters 2 for Wii U or 3DS with multiple characters further expanding the Metroid universe, a fantastic multiplayer mode and an engaging single player it'd be fucking amazing. It wouldn't be Prime, but it'd be something and if anyone could pull it off it'd be Retro.

Plus, it's not like they didn't tease the fuck out of it at the end of 3:

I think people are really reaching trying to connect the "can you dig it" with the metroid prime hunters commercial. The developers of Splatoon forgot about Super Mario Sunshine but we're expecting other Nintendo employees to be making obscure hints using the name of a commercial for a game they didn't even develop.

I would love Retro to try a brand new IP or revive a long dormant/dead IP (no, Metroid doesn't count by any stretch). Bring back something like Mach Rider or Urban Champion considering those games are wide open for new interpretation.

But it'll probably be Donkey Kong.

They didn't even make the first Metroid Prime Hunters game...so not sure why they would make the sequel to it.

They assisted NXT with Hunters, but it's clear from playing the game they didn't have any significant input. But, some people liked the game and want a sequel, and Tanabe expressed interest in expanding the Metroid universe... I think he mentioned a possible Hunters 2 but I can't remember for sure.

Edit: Here it is...

"Basically I’m thinking of, not just Samus, but how we can expand the whole Samus universe," Tanabe said. "You remember Metroid Prime Hunters. I’m thinking about things like how we could make that go out further, with all these different bounty hunters as well."

If Retro is working on Metroid, I hope someone at Retro slaps some sense into him and explains that Metroid is METROID, and people want Metroid after Other M.

Retro's making a Jill Dozer game?

Cranky Kong Prime?

Retro's making fucking Donkey Konga?

Mario Spelunkers?

I'm late to this thread so there's a high chance all of these jokes have been made verbatim

You're missing Prime Hunters, Prime Pinball and Fussion. Metroid has had it a lot better than DK actually.

Not really serious. I'd still love a third DK game with more animal buddies and crazy Squitter shenanigans.
