Rumor: Is Retro Studio teasing their presence at E3?

I mean, it really wasn't. Donkey Kong was their only 2D platformer that E3.

As far as memory serves, the only two other notable ones on the system at all were NSMBU and Rayman.

NSMBU, Rayman and Tropical Freeze - not to mention most of the indie titles on the eShop, are a pretty big chunk of like 8 games worth playing. Not to mention the NSMB U Luigi pack.

What else was there before Tropical Freeze? 3D World and The Wonderful 101?

A 3rd DK to complete a trilogy seems pretty silly. Not really a series that needs a trilogy seeing as it's an on going franchise.
Wouldn't mind a reboot in 3D though. That franchise never made the jump...in a successful way.
Either way, I'll likely play it.
A new Metroid coming out for the anniversary next year would be pretty nice tho
As for the dig it thing, could just mean nothing. Like the Platinum Games "cry " bit.
Cry, seeing red, etc could point out to most of their franchises. Wonder Red is red, Bayonetta 1 had red guns, Mad world had red sploches.
"Dig it" could be referencing a lot of things. In Zelda you can dig, that Mole game too, maybe it's just Shovel Knight Metroid DLC and they aren't announcing anything.

The true Wii U champ of 2013, Pikmin 3.

Tropical Freeze was already perfect to me. I wouldn't mind if Retro went back to Metriod.

Now that Playtonic exists, I'd like to see them tackle a new 3D DK years down the road. I doubt it would ever happen but I can dream.

It's time, my friends - time to close out the DKCR trilogy with Donkey Kong Country: Kremling Katastrophe. Take the kongs back to the newly-risen Crocodile Isle for one last ride. It has to be this way.

I would also argue that ZombiU, Nintendoland, Monster Hunter, and Lego City Undercover were all worthwile titles for the Wii U launch. Mileage may vary depending on tastes, but it didn't feel like the system was "overwhelmed" with platformers.

The case is clear for me. Nintendo should know by now that Retro is the only western dev working for them that could bring some hardcore gamers into their consoles. DKCTF is an awesome game and one of my favourite platformers ever, but it caters to an audience that although seemingly there, is not that interested (looking at the sales).

Another DKC game would be a business mistake but not necessarily a flop.

Metroid on the other hand is a series in which Nintendo can still put a whole lot of ideas that would be attractive from the gameplay standpoint and still keep that hardcore game touch.

Not to mention there's plenty of other systems with tons of (good) 2D platformers nowadays and the ones on WiiU did absolutely nothing to differentiate themselves, not even within their own series. Playing TF gave me absolutely no experience I didn't see almost identically in DK 3DS a few months earlier. The problem wasn't DK as a franchise, but that it was just another 2D rehash, trying yet again to cheaply replicate what worked on the original Wii. If they had a 3D DK like Banjo or something ready, you can bet your ass you would have had a much more cheerful thread on the matter.

Can't believe this year there still has fucking 2D Chibi Robo, Mario Maker (which should have been the WiiU launch title basically replacing all the other platformers) and another 2D Yoshi. Who would have thought that the success of New Mario Bros. would haunt us THIS long? But yeah, let's make DKC Returns 3 :lol And then keep wondering oh why Nintendo's systems could possibly be dying at the moment (...I don't expect there actually is a Retro game at E3).

Seriously, reading that original fucking donkey kong thread, Retro's game BETTER be DKCR3. I need it for the reactions alone.

Some of my favourites so far from last time;

Curious how many people went from "Fuck Nintendo for making Retro work on Donkey Kong" to "Tropical freeze is amazing, make DKCR3 Retro"

I have to admit, while I devour great 2D platformers with the same fervour reserved for flapjacks I don't especially need a third 2D DK platformer by Retro, I mean I'll happily take it but Tropical Freeze was so damn good and all I could really have asked for to improve it is for its bonus rooms to not suck (hey Retro, there's still time to fix this when you give it the next gen remaster, also Squitter the spider).

But 3D DK? that's a whole different story, I'd love to see how Retro would tackle this. For all the complaints about too many Nintendo platformers the realm of 3D is still very much occupied by Mario alone with his games getting closer to the 2D formula as they continue and across the other platforms 3D platformers are still heavily missed.
There's an opportunity here for Retro to fill a void that Mario left open, Retro are so good at world building that a more open DK game in 3D could be really interesting.
Funnily enough when it comes to Metroid I feel that going 2D would actually end up more fresh than revisiting the Prime formula for a fourth time, they got weaker as they progressed and I can't shake the idea that a Prime 4 would just be a safe entry. A 2D Metroid would be like the ultimate conclusion of all Retro picked up from the Prime and Returns games.

Or of course there's always new IP or another Nintendo franchise, the great thing is for me it's kind of tough to get disappointed with what Retro end up doing next.
(okay, unless it's like.... Dr Mario or something)

I want Retro to pretty much make every Nintendo franchise at some point. 2D Mario, Star Fox, Animal Crossing...
I lied, working on fucking Animal Crossing could only interest me if they uprooted the whole formula and made the series feel fresh again, on that note I'm already prepared to snooze through a potential AC Wii U next week, City Folk still stings man.

Personally, if there is a Metroid game, I kinda expect Retro do a Metroid Prime for the Wii U, while Monster Games re-uses assets from them to make a 2D Metroid for 3DS.

I can't be bothered to read the past fourteen pages to see, but have you guys discussed the other tweets/status updates from Retro to see if they link up with this one? From what I remember have we had them saying,

Retro really loves Halloween.
Peekaboo
Can you dig it?

So, it seems pretty obvious to me, they're making some kind of Luigi's Mansion where you have to dig for treasure whilst co-oping with Wario, on Halloween? Sounds great.

I'll get my coat.

I was one of em! I hadn't played returns (a platformer with waggle was so frustrating, I was so burnt out on waggle)

But I picked up returns day 1 since it looks AMAZING and it blew me away. I always *liked* donkey Kong but Retro made me love him.

So I'd love to see them also bring back the Kremlings in time for K. Rool in smash ;)

Agreed. DKCR was incredible in my book, and I was still disappointed by the Tropical Freeze reveal. And even though that game's near-perfect, I'll only be further disappointed if they feel the need to make DKCR a trilogy.

It'd be fantastic regardless, of course. Plus, again, after TF bombed (Because gamers are all Philistines these days, apparently), I really don't see them going back to DK, even assuming that someone else (Next Level?) is handling this Metroid.

Yeah, Retro handled the DK franchise perfectly and it's among the best platformers in recent years but I just want something else! No more 2D platformers, Nintendo!

Unless it's a 2D Metroid ala Super Metroid of course.

Prepare for the worst. It's going to be Donkey Kong.

- The Donkey Land III quote matches up perfectly.

- All of the Donkey Kong Country games released on Virtual Console this year including 64.

- It explains how they can release a new game so soon. The last game they did that had a two year gap was the first two Metroid Primes. Same system, same series/type of game.

- Nintendo can have another Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, one not made by Rare.

As for me while I rather they work on something else this would give the Wii U it's first direct sequel to another game on the console. Something every Nintendo home console has had.

The DKL3 quote isn't actual promotional material. It's a written summary from a DK fan site.

Always stoked for the next Retro game. They're the best in the business. I do hope it's something besides Donkey Kong, though. I absolutely drool at the possibilities. Metroid (Prime or otherwise) would be wonderful. Retro is probably the only studio who could equal or top F-Zero GX. Or a completely new IP? That's maybe the best possibility of all.

A new online based Metroid game makes perfect sense really, but it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity of making an amazing, epic HD single player adventure.

The posts saying "anyone could have made Donkey Kong! Why is Nintendo wasting Retro's talent?" really make me laugh.

Haha yeah okay. Because Nintendo sure knew how to make one before Retro made DKCR. Keep Koizumi far, far away from Donkey Kong or you can kiss Diddy and the gang goodbye.
I can't begin to fathom how anyone could consider Jungle Beat anything less than excellent. You are in the grip of madness.
