Rumor: Retro Studios' next game is a new "brand"

I heard it's a sequel to Zodra's Revenge

I hope it's true. Nintendo needs to loosen their chain and give their severely disciplined kid Asian doctor a chance to take a creative writing class just for fun.

If I had to guess the possible Nintendo IPs I could see getting a "new brand" from Retro would be:
  • Star Fox (though I don't think fans actually want a re-brand of this)
  • F-Zero (same as above)*
  • Ice Climber
  • Takamaru*
  • Star Tropics
  • Balloon Trip/Fight*
  • Gumshoe
  • Custom Robo
  • Mach Rider
  • Wave Race
  • Earthbound (unlikely as it has only ever been done by Itoi)
  • Golden Sun (unlikely as it has only ever been done by Camelot)
  • Advance Wars (unlikely as it has mostly been done by Intelligent Systems)

*Have games in Nintendoland, which could indicate that Nintendo wanted to increase brand awareness for an upcoming title

Yes please, thats the only thing I wanted, ready for something new from Retro dont care if its E-rated platformer, dark fantasy or a Rapeplay-killer, they can do no wrong in my eyes.

How could you forget Doshin the Giant.

But some of us cares about StarTropics =(

Either or, if the series has been gone for a long time it can practically be rebranded from the ground up. It's almost a blank slate without having to do all the ground work.

I never heard of Star Tropics before I heard rumors of Retro doing it. Sounds perfect for a reboot, if the source material is solid.

StarTropicsU: Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider/ Uncharted without guns.

The main character's father is an archeologist named Doctor (Steve) Jones after all.

Didn't they hire a bunch of Uncharted and Darksiders people. To me that suggests it won't be a racer but a game that focuses on exploration and elaborate environments which brings us to:

- Metroid
- Star Fox
- Metroid X Star Fox
- New IP
- Zelda Spin off
- Star Tropics
- 3D Donkey Kong game
- Eternal Darkness

I understand that some people have fond memories of it, but I would think if given the choice Retro would make a new IP. Then you aren't in any way handicapped by the conventions and lore of the previous games.

I'm not against Star Tropics as much as I'm for something brand new.

Do they mention anything about an e3 showing? Because with all the games Nintendo has to cover, I wouldn't be surprised if they left this for a 2014 reveal.

Yeah, the meltdowns are going to be terrible. No matter what it is, some people are going to be annoyed/disappointed and if it's even the least bit stylized or cartoon-y, there'll be meltdowns.

So, I'm going to put money down for a Devil World re-boot.

Naughty Dog, Vigil, and if I remember correctly, also I.D. software, Junction Point and Eidos.

The thing is, they have proven they excel at reinventing properties. Its both, exciting to see what they do with them and a proven formula that has seen much success. I don't know if I would mess with it.

Well they have to show something new, dont they? They already blew most of their load in January and the new thing they have left to show is this, the mario trio and some crazy moneyhat that will amount to lots of articles and littles sales.

no... god....

if that star tropics shit comes true I'm going to be very disappointed. I am really looking forward to a Metroid game on Wii U. Other than Monster Hunter, it's one of the reasons I bought the system.

damn it. I really hope this rumor isn't true.

I'm not. I'm keeping an open mind and don't really mind what it is as long as it's top tier quality. I loved the Metroid Prime series and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Bayonetta 2 , SMT VS FE, and mario might suffice. Lets be realistic.

Metroid Dread, pls Retro. You proved you excel at 2D games with DKCR so it's only fair.

Golden Sun U would be amazing. I will now have my hopes set high, and I will more than likely be very disappointed, cause everyone knows this will never happen.

I told people that Retro's game would be at last E3 and even specified I was 99% sure about it, I am bitter and rude and angry and not fun to be around since.
We love you. Cheer up. I have a strong feeling wii u will shine this e3. Retro or no retro. This won't be e3 2012 again. I can FEEL it.

As much as I loved the Prime games and Metroid in general and wouldn't mind them making another one, how dare Audrey Drake say they shouldn't make a new IP.

That would be my first choice, my second Metroid and my third Donkey Kong Country Returns 2.

Anything but the inevitable Star Fox!!!

New Brand = New IP please. I want to be blown away by a game that no one would ever expect, not a retread of a franchise everyone has already played.

I wonder how likely are the possibilities of Retro doing two games at the same time. Maybe a smaller scale game for 3DS along their meaty Wii U game. They increased manpower and moved into new offices recently, right?

I'd freaking love a 2D Metroid for 3DS.

Hi everyone..it's been..quite an interesting week for me, to say the very absolute least! I'm still standing 100 percent by what I wrote. Could I elaborate on everything? Absolutely. But, the wisest choice may be to not say very much more than I already have. Believe me, I've been wanting to participate and answer questions. It's taking everything in me not to, I know this is a massive risk for me, but I'm confident on the 11th ill be vindicated. ;)

So, I have been very careful on my posting this last week and will have to continue to be for the next 13 days. Needless to say this has been the most eventful week I have had in quite some time.

Lastly, I wanted to comment real quick on the whole Prophet nickname thing. I'm not mad at that at all, it got a sincere and honest chuckle out of me. Prophet Claus would have been funnier still. But, you guys did good ill give you credit for that :)

Oh those games are great and Bayonetta deserves focus since it hasnt being discussed, SMT VS FE will get its time on the spotlight to talk about third parties and FE's newfound glory, Mario trio will do the trick. But those games are already announced in some capacity, they need some wildcard and Zelda is probably not quite ready. Theres also the chance that the Retro game is nearing completion.

Just releasing a bunch of Mario family titles is going to look really bad

They're also releasing a new IP no one will buy (Wonderful 101), an old niche IP no one will buy (Pikmin 3), and a Zelda remake.

No matter how it looks the Zelda remake and the Mario games (plus maybe Sonic too) will probably carry the system this holiday.

While I love their work with Metroid, I'm definitely 100% in support of Retro busting out a new IP. They're a great team and I imagine a lot of them have been super eager to dust off some original ideas they've been squatting on. This could be a defining moment for Retro, or possibly Nintendo.

I'll piss in your grave if your prophecies don't come true ;)

My dream game for retro right now would be dkcr2. Then they can go on to do whatever the fuck they want.
The thought of the original dkc2 revived like dck was,in hd, with Dixie and an awesome soundtrack would be shot to my no. 1 most anticipated game. Alas, retro thinks it's wise to turn their back on a 5 million selling series (and counting, with the 3ds port). Sigh. ...

I guess, but wouldn't you give them something more high profile then? Why not Star Fox or any or a more recent RPG franchise like Golden Sun?

eh while your right it will get them by it will be by a small margin and it will end up dreamcast'd by next Spring because don't forget MS and Sony's next gen platforms are coming out this fall with tons of mind blowing games getting announced. If they don't show Retro's game at e3 then they might as well delay it for Nintendo's next gen console because the Wii U will be dead by the time it arrives in late 2014. Nintendo needs all the help it can get literally right now (as in the time between now and this holiday season)
